Did anyone else see the runout of Du Preez? That ruling by the umpire was completely wrong!!

The Laws of the Game state that, if the bails are already off, you have to remove a stump either by pulling it out of the ground, or knocking it out, 'providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used'.

The bowle held the ball in her right hand and pulled out the stump with her left hand. The fact that she then tapped the ball onto the stump that was now out of the ground means nothing.

I mean, I knew that rule when I was 8 - never expected to actually see it. How the umpire got it wrong is a mystery.

Lisa Sthaleker even admits there is alot of bad mistakes:

And players are also starting to make comments via socials - I know if players are in commentary they may discuss events within that match, but we're seeing frustrations voiced more generally this time

And this from last night is Coytes first stand alone/non-reply tweet in over 2-years

There's a couple of folks online trying to argue it was the correct decision, and this is just one person but I'm totally confused trying to make sense of their reasoning:

- Nope, perfectly correct decision. The stump is 'struck, out of the ground' not 'struck out of the ground'. Once it's been removed, one hand has ball, the other has stump, they are struck together.

- You're reading the law wrong. Everyone who has ever played the game know this is correct, at every level that I've played and umpired. You can pick up the stump out of the ground, and strike the ball on the stump. What would happen if all 3 stumps had been knocked out already?...

... Would the batter not be able to be run out at that end at all?

The fielder does not have to strike the stump to knock it out of the ground, they are striking the stump while it's out of the ground. The rules could be clearer, but its clear to 99.9% of cricket players/fans.

I'm waiting to see their response to the CA article I screenshot for them which said it was wrong due to AJW not holding the ball in the same hand used to remove the stumps

They're wrong.

The laws say (I just looked it up) says;
'The wicket is broken fairly if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground, by a fielder with his/her hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used.'

Also re 'What if all 3 stumps have been knocked out?'. The laws specifically state 'any fielder may, however, while the ball is in play, put back one or more stumps into the ground where the wicket originally stood'.

Erin Burns saved 4 runs on the last ball. Damn this is where we need video reviews.

Perth post 166/8 against Sixers.
How important could those 4 runs be?

Amazing from Burns, but then she is probably the best outfielder in the women's game.

For the WBBL to be taken seriously, you need video technology for those 'iffy' decisions on the boundary rope rather than taking the fielders word.
