he was happy to drop the belt, just not to Shawn and not in Montreal.

With only one night to go on his contract WWE didn't want to take that risk. Let's not forget they got Alundra Blaze/Madusa to appear on Nitro and drop the WWE women's title in the trash can live on the air. Vince was paranoid that WCW would pay him more money and get him to not drop the title the following night and then do something similar to the belt on Nitro.

What WWE did to Brett was low, but Brett wasn't being the easiest person to work with either. WWE should have got Brett to drop the belt as soon as he announced he was leaving rather then wait until the last minute.

Bret didnt want to drop the belt to Shawn in Montreal, and depending who you believe, was willing to drop it the following RAW before heading to wCw.

The plan was for him not to drop the belt in the sense of losing a match to someone, but to just relinquish the belt and say goodbye, making the belt vacant.

The next night's RAW wast still in Canada after all, Ottawa I believe.

Correct. He got screwed massively and Shawn Michaels was a tosser to Brett anyways.
When Shawn won it the 1st time off him Shawn told Brett to get out the fking ring, this wasnt scripted. Brett was pissed at him for that so he wasnt going to drop the belt at home to that w***er

Refusing to drop the belt before he left the company wasn't the answer either however.
he said he would drop it to anyone and anywhere but Micheals in Canada, he even offered a non finish and then lose the next night on raw to HBK as it was outside of canada.

He was screwed over legitimately by HBK and Vince

and blow the Survivor Series buildup? That's not good for business!

I know the thread is old, but so what? I loved WCW, enjoyed those great years when WCW was great and Bret Hart was at some of his best, then WCW ruined him and they fell in a heap

When he left? You mean when Vince effectively fired him less than 12 months into a 20 year contract? Bret didnt want to leave, he was let go and all he asked for was some control over how he left and it that means not dropping the title in his home country after such a big feud and buildup over recent months then so what? Lets not forget this was against the same arseh*le who refused to do the job he had promised earlier that year and instead 'lost his smile'

Oh and Brets contract was terminated by Vince from the end of November in 1997, 21 days after Survivor Series, not 1

Refusing to drop the belt before he left the company wasn't the answer either however.

But yeah Bret should have been smart about it, he should have lost his smile and dumped the belt in the trash before Survivor Series, just like Shawn did

one idea that was suggested in the latter part of 1997 was was for Bret to keep the belt until WrestleMania XIV in Boston and drop the belt to Austin, a re-match from the previous year, this time a clear winner being decided... then Bret leaves WWF for WCW... would have been the true passing of the torch between the "New Generation Era" and the "Attitude Era", no screwjob, and we probably would be seeing Bret working for WWE again in some capacity today

Would have been much better if he dropped it to Austin, Bret probably would have happily dropped it to Austin at any stage but who could blame him for not wanting to drop it to Shawn?

Yes! That and Goldberg spearing the metal plate on his chest. :thumbsu:

Don't get me wrong, I love Bret, but he was clearly still sooking for pretty much his entire time there until Russo came along and the megapush started.

Although "who are you to doubt El Dandy" is probably a greater legacy than a serious top run anyway

A couple of great moments, I love reliving them on youtube, that promo on Goldberg is one of the greatest

As for his sooking, it seemed to be pretty much the usual in WCW for anyone not a friend of Hogans, it was a shit place to be in those final years as alot of these bad moments of WCW show
