It's called work ethic, and team ethic.

Stick with the youth, add gardy in 2005, get a better draw.

Things are looking up

Except, they recruited the likes of Brett Voss, Gherig, Hamill, Black etc, to complement their youngsters.

No name forward line, No name defence1

But your bloody Midfield is one of the best (maybe even the best) in the comp.

C: Embley ~ Cousins ~ Fletcher
R: Cox ~ Judd ~ Kerr

Simple as that. Collingwood are a shocking team. Lokan and Shaw are players that would never get a gig at our club yet somehow they can embarrass us? No Buckley and Rocca for most of the game and we are still down by 20 odd at 3 quarter time.

We are crap. We wont make the 8 and if we continue to be crap we will lose Chris Judd. Not that it makes much difference anyway because were **** with him anyway???????

Im sick of being crap.

We're not crap. we're young and inexperienced. If that's woosha's plan, blood the kids that are our future and write off this season then so be it.

For me I would rather have had a few youngsters at a time and tried for an 8 place. But the kids will be better for the experience.

I agree that Collingwood are crap, without stars and lost three players last night so were there for the taking.

But try this

Wirrpunda, Glass, Collica
Nicoski, Lynch, Hunter
Embley, Cousins, Judd
Sampi, Staker, Chick
Jones R, Doogs, Matera

Cox, Kerr, Fletcher

Int: Seaby, Morrisson, Braun, B jones

Still blooding Lynch, Nicoski, Staker, Doogs and B Jones but has a lot more experience and IMO would have beaten the pies.

Well St Kilda picked up a swag of extra draft picks, used them to pick up top players like Kozitchke and Reiwoldt and traded others for some big names. ie take Hamill, Gehrig and Reiwoldt out and where would the saints be? We are not in their situation.

And don't count on Gardy...

Yeah, I guess we must have got into those last two grand finals by accident.

2 Major factors

1) Buckley

2) Huge bias giving you nearly every game at home, friday night games ion plenty and a biased priick of a commentator who has control of key figures at VFL....oops i mean AFL headquarters.

And still you CHOKED

Agree 100%. Our draw this year has been horrendus... to play 7 of the top 8 sides in the first 9 weeks.... and now we are about to get Collingwood, Adelaide and Geelong while they are resurgant and not the bottom teams they were at the beginning of the year. It seems like nothing is going our way this year.

Problem with supporters is they want everything now... but take a look at where St Kilda was this time last year.... the difference between St Kilda then and now is CONFIDENCE..... and they have been able to get confidence up because of the fact for almost 15 weeks of football from the end of 2003 until about round 8 this year they had almost not played a single top 8 side because of their benefical draw. Confidence is everything and we have none of it at the moment.

Maybe us making the finals the last 2 years raised our expectations... but take a look at the list of young players we have who are currently playing in our team.

Fletcher, Chad 86 games
Embley, Andrew 85 games
Kerr, Daniel 72 games
Cox, Dean 65 games
Judd, Chris 56 games
Sampi, Ashley 36 games
Gaspar, Travis 26 games
McDougall, Andrew 21 games
Humm, Jeremy 21 games
Lynch, Quinten 20 games
Staker, Brent 16 games
Nicoski, Mark 7 games
Jones, Brett 5 games
Selwood, Adam 5 games
Waters, Beau 4 games
Seaby, Mark 4 games
Butler, Sam 2 games

Thats 17 young guys who are getting a game and are in the team because of their ability and the form they had shown in the WAFL/AFL. They aren't just there because of injuries... they are all earning their spot and doing very well. It takes time... if you look at someone like Andrew Embley and Fletcher who probably didn't start playing well until around game 70..... Cox is just now at about game 60 coming into his own as a ruckman and still improving.... these kids take time and some of them havent even played 10 games yet!!!!!!!

This is our team for the next 10 years and 10 of those 17 have not even played 1 full season of football yet in terms of games. I don't know about you guys but I am excited by it.

good on woosha for giving the young kids a go
many coaches wouldn't bother, instead waiting till another team has trained up young players and then grabbing them
woosha is thinking of the club long-term and he's doing a bloody good job. so we don't get in the finals this year, it doesn't matter that much.
i know this phrase is over-used but i think our team really does show "potential". all they need now is confidence and experience, something that will only come with time.

Get off it. We play as many home games as anybody else (Vic clubs).

What's this VFL crap? Do you have some sort of complex, and think we actually give a crap about WA?

Be realistic, Collingwood are a crap side that beat a young and inexperienced team which doesn't know how to play in Victoria. Minus a few mistakes through inexperience which directly resulted in a Collingwood goal, and Matera's worst career game, and WC would have waltzed over the Pies.

Try not to get too excited by your 3 wins, you're only setting yourself up for dissapointment.

Down back??? I think if we are alright anywhere it is down back.

no depth.

glass and lynch are solid. after that tough?? Carroll.....

up front there is plenty of options - Doogs, Stakes, Hansen, Gaspar and to a degree Seaby and Cox and probably Gardy next year. Even through Johnson in. It's just no one has completely stood up and said "I'm gonna be CHF or FF for West Coast for the next 10 years"

True we do lack depth as Carroll is not a very good third option if Lynch or Glass cant play for whatever reason but at least our first options down back are actually good.

Whereas our first options down forward are crap. Doogs, Stakes, Hansen, Gaspar etc have done nothing of note yet and its getting frustrating. But they are young and inexperienced so I suppose we have to live with it.

Oh and I was thinking about finals football. If there was ever a good year to miss the finals, this year would be it. StKilda are absolutely dominant and the Lions are still the Lions. Gardiner is also out. So what would be the point of making the finals?

The only plus about making the finals would be one game of experience for the youngsters in a finals atmosphere.

My eternal optimism is returning. Maybe with Gardiner back and a full season behind the likes of Doogs, Lynch, Nicoski, Waters, Butler, Selwood, Hansen etc etc a better draw and some more draft picks, maybe some trades. We could jump right back up.

That's why I am now thinking of next year. This year can be the next step for better things next season. Play the youngers, give the KPPs more experience and games like the one against the pies will only make our blokes harder.

Roll on 2005

Like many of you I was so cheesed of by the game on Friday night that I had to wait until today to vote and post some comments.

I agree with most of the things being said here, mainly that we're playing crap.

We are a very young side and I know that we cannot expect too much of many of the youngsters, but what I expect of the whole team and all the time is to man up on your opposition and we have been doing this very poorly.

Glass and Lynch are ok, but they are not champions of the game and I don't think they have it in them to become champions of the game.

In the last couple of games McDougall is starting to show a bit more hardness at the ball and taking a few more marks. Maybe he's finally starting to get it together.

We have too many clangers and you can be patient with the youngsters because of inexperience but a lot of these turnovers come from experienced players like Wirrapunda and Cousins.

I liked what I saw of Hansen while he was there. Apparently he was having cramps that's why he was taken off the field. This shows that the intensity of AFL is much higher than WAFL and he has to learn to cope with that. And I expect he will.

We are not inthe same position of ST Kilda in 2003. The saints have been getting a lot of top 5 picks in the last 5 drafts, we only had Judd (and Sampi at #6).

Still, as some other people in this forum believe, a good second part of the season could mean we start the right way in 2005.

The difference between us and the top teams, like ST Kilda, Brisbane and Bombers is:
1. We lack class KP players
2. We lack experience, which results in too many turnovers.
3. We don't man up and are not hard enough at the ball.

I say, keep playing the kids and the players who have a future with us to give them experience.

We are a long way away from being premiership contenders, but let's start building now and finding who are the players who have an AFL future with us.

There is one word that explains our season and why we crashed after rd 15 last year.

Gardiner
Maybe, but forget Gardiner as he's not the key to this side - our spine is. If Gardiner comes back next year and we still don't have a spine, we still aren't going to challenge for the flag. if our spine continues to develop over the next season and a half along with Gardiner being fit, we should be a strong contender.

I gotta say Viduka that your post is probably one of the best i've read this year,

There's alot of young players that have shown they have the talent to play senior footy for a few yrs yet & im with you.

Its actually scarry as MV has had quiet a few really good posts lately. He has always been able to make me laugh but couple of recent posts whilst still colourfull and over the top were very insightful and well thought out.

Perhaps you are not just a Saints and Docker troll....:D :D :D

I agree that MV's summation of the Eagles and their draw on this thread is the most sensible thing I've read from him ( I'm only a newbie but usually disagree with him). And to be fair he's not just an indiscriminate troll - he trolls all AFL clubs other than his own.
