We already knew this but the reality is guys is that we will never get out of the bottom 10 (Or 6 even) with talented kids leaving. Player retention is extremely important to making a push for the finals and ultimately a flag.

Do we just put a quota of QLD kids we draft every year? 75% of kids we draft must be from QLD? It's a suggestion, maybe very shit but I am for one think we need to change our perception of drafting people interstate clubs with our first pick unless they state they are happy to come here (Schache due to the Bears connection is one) Of course, just saying they want to come here is one...But other factors need to be considered.

This is the lowest moment for me supporting the Lions since all the way back in 2000. Yes we did very well but all through our history we have been a feeder club and will forever be irrelevant and at the bottom.

I don't know, mine was some day in 2004 - I can't remember what day it was though but it was pretty heart breaking.

I wanted this as a seperate thread, we need to discuss how we should approach the draft now in regards to our first round picks. Yes there will be people like Alison who will take up our first rounds in 2016 but how about from 17 onwards? Can't assume an academy kid will be first round.

Let's not get too emotional here - it's a player who never really bought in and was widely accepted to be leaving for the majority of his time in Brisbane finally announcing that he wants to go. Not much has changed today from last week, or 6 months ago I don't think.

The AFL does undoubtedly need to address retention though, and soon. This market is far too valuable for them to allow us to be unsuccessful much longer. I reckon there would have been more than a few nervous executives watching QLD's love of the NRL grand final.

It's what probably put us in a better position than, say, Port when they're going poorly. The success of Port is far less valuable to the AFL than the success of Brisbane. We'll be right.

We have two Queenslanders joining the club both ranked in the top 20 of this draft on the back of drafting Freeman, Dawson and Andrews cheap. As long as we have an academy producing talent we will be ok.

Hopefully after 10 years of the Academy a larger portion of our list will be from Queensland...until then :(

Seriously though, first round rookie contracts need to be extended. 2 years is not enough time for a bottom club to convince a first round pick that they're turning it around. Need 3/4 year initial rookie contracts. They get longer stability which helps them start off in the initial days, and so do we in the long run. Win-Win.

just another step backwards in selling the club to the kids coming into our system this year in the draft
