"We are committed to taking XXX in the rookie draft"

I don't have a problem with it as long as the delisting club and the delisted player accept it is fair game that someone else can select them.

Up to the club to delist the right player that no one else is interested in / you don't care if someone else takes them.

If anyone wants George Stevens or Matofai-Forbes knock yourselves out.

If another club wants to take one of those Sydney guys, take them, there is no gentleman's code here if you are delisting senior players so you can rort the academy picks.

Its clear draft manipulation.

Can I Eagles come out and say "We are committed to bidding on Zeke Uwland at pick 1" today people would go apeshit about it despite it being the same thing

Pretty sure if a club delists a contracted player and another club drafts them the original club still has to cover the remainder of their contract.

So a club that finished below GWS this year could take Stringer in the rookie draft and have GWS paying his entire contract for how ever many years he had left with them

GWS pay the difference. The new club has to pay at least the minimum rookie wage, if he puts a price on his head in the draft and is drafted then that becomes the minimum for the new club to pay.

the rookie draft is outdated and has been clearly abused for years.

(1) remove the rookie draft, its name and the title "rookie" from all AFL lists.
(2) first round draftees are given 3 year deals, second round draftees given 2 year deals, anyone after that 1 year deals. No need for rookie drafts as they are eligible to play from the get go anyway.
(3) clubs and player are allowed to negotiate new deals, extensions asap.
(4) removes the question marks over these constant situations that have every year.

probably missed some stuff but the only "rookies" are Cat B ones, who are in fact coming from a long way back

Even the AFL doesn’t care about the rookie draft. It’s usually hard to find the Link and they barely mention it when it’s on. It’s like what the draft was 30 years ago.

It's not draft manipulation. They're not saying they will take the player and no other club can.

They are saying that we will take him in the rookie draft if he is still available then. Nothing to stop other clubs taking him before that.

There is nothing to formally stop other clubs taking them before that.

There would be a nuclear meltdown from club, player and player manager if West Coast decided to just draft Rampe off their own bat.
