Jack Silvagni is one of 3 Blues to re-sign with the club.

Carlton have re-signed trio Nathan Broad, Wylie Buzza and Jack Silvagni to new deals.
Broad has re-signed until the end of 2020, while Buzza and Silvagni have re-signed until the end of 2019.
Broad played 12 games for the Blues in 2017 and was solid in defence, playing alongside Jacob Weitering and Jesse Glass-McCasker.
Wylie Buzza was traded to Carlton from Geelong at the end of last year and played 9 games for 9 goals.
Jack Silvagni made his debut in round 4 against Hawthorn and found his niche playing up forward, where he booted 13 goals in 15 games.

The Blues have also announced the delistings of rookies Billy Gowers and Cameron Wood.

The Blues have delisted defenders Kristian Jaksch and Lachie Plowman in their next part of list management. Both have struggled since arriving at Carlton.
Carlton would like to wish them all the best.

Meanwhile, Carlton have confirmed that they will use their first round pick to select father son Braden McKay. McKay is an outside midfielder, who has the ability to play up forward. He averaged 20.7 disposals and 1.5 goals a game during the Under 18 Championships for Vic Metro.

Gee Plowman and Jaksch unlucky. Guess they aren't as good as they'll be in real life
something stuffed up at the end of last season, so they technically didnt have contracts for 2017, but were still on the list and the game delisted them automatically!

with the 2017 lists, im going to make sure that Plowman is a defender, not a midfielder cos if he was, he would be in Broad's spot at the moment.

2017 TRADE PERIOD DAY 1
22/10/2017

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Day 1 of the AFL Trade Period has begun, as 9 trades are completed on the first day, including a couple of surprises.

The first trade to be completed involved Hawthorn and Carlton, as Hawthorn sent their first round pick (13) to Carlton in exchange for talented youngster Charlie Curnow. It came as a bit of a shock to some, but Curnow hasn't delivered on his promise at Carlton and thought that the Blues wasn't the place for him.

The 2nd trade to get completed was between North Melbourne and Collingwood. North Melbourne received midfielder Tim Broomhead, in exchange for Pick 21 in the draft.
The 3rd trade also involved the two clubs, as a separate deal was made that saw Jesse White move to Arden St, while Pick 38 went to the Holden Centre.

Essendon and Richmond were involved in trade #4 for the day, as David Astbury and Sam Grimley swapped clubs.

Carlton were involved in their 2nd trade for the day, which saw midfielder Nick Graham move to Essendon and in return, Shaun Edwards moved to IKON Park. Graham struggled to get a good run in the Carlton side and saw that a move would benefit him most. Edwards played 21 games for the Dons in 2017, averaging 20+ touches and will add a lot of run to the Blues side.

Trade #6 also involved Carlton, who made 3 trades on the opening day. It saw picks 42 and 59 go to Geelong, in exchange for Rhys Stanley and Pick 66. Stanley is a ruck/forward who adds a bit of experience in the Carlton forward line.

The 7th trade for the day was a bombshell. The Dogs pulled off the biggest trade of the year as they were able to snatch former Adelaide captain Taylor Walker, in exchange for 3 draft picks. Picks 10, 45 and 62 were traded to Adelaide, in order for Walker to move to the Kennel.

The 8th trade wasn't as big as the Walker one, but it still saw St Kilda trade away one of its most talented players in Jack Newnes to Essendon. In exchange, the Saints received Tom Lee and picks 37 and 54.

The final trade of the day involved North Melbourne and Fremantle as the Kangaroos traded pick 55 to Fremantle for midfielder Danyle Pearce.

Former Adelaide captain Taylor Walker was the biggest name to move clubs, as he was traded to the Western Bulldogs on day 1.

Day 4 and Day 5 sought no trades as clubs packed up at the end of day 3.

Carlton have delisted midfielder Ed Curnow in their final list change before the drafts.
Curnow played 127 games with the club and was a great servant for the Blues, during their darker years.

Meanwhile, the Blues signed David Cuningham and Harry McKay to new contracts. Both signing 1 year deals, tying them to the club until the end of 2018.

Carlton - BRADEN MCKAY - Pick 7 - Outside Midfielder - 187cm/90kg
Braden McKay is Carlton's first pick in the 2017 AFL Draft. McKay is a father son and was locked in for this choice in early October. McKay plays predominantly on a wing, but can push forward and cause havoc as a small forward. His under 18 championships were very good, as he averaged 20.7 touches and 1.5 goals a game and will be a great midfielder for the Blues. He is really quick for his size and reads the play very well. He can run all day and has a very good vertical leap. McKay will be pushing for senior selection early on in 2018.

Carlton - ALEC WATERMAN - Pick 13 - Inside Midfielder - 183cm/89kg
Carlton sprung a surprise with their second pick in the draft, selecting former West Coast Eagle Alec Waterman with pick 13. Waterman, who was a father son with West Coast, failed to play a game at his time with the Eagles and was delisted after 2 years of the list. He is a strong inside midfielder, who is also very quick and has the ability to burst out of packs. He has elite disposal by foot and is a very good set shot at goal. He also has a fantastic vertical leap and is also very strong overhead. He will be looking to learn off guys like David Armitage and Patrick Cripps over the pre season.

Carlton - RHYS MATHIESON - Pick 7 - Inside Midfielder - 185cm/79kg
Carlton thought long and hard about this selection, deliberately using only 2 picks in the National Draft, so that they can pick up an experienced or ready made player. They used pick 7 on tough nut Rhys Mathieson. Mathieson is a former Brisbane Lion, who played 17 games for the club. He is very good around the stoppages and is an all rounded player, who can play a role for the Blues when required. He has the knowledge of the game and has the experience, so won't be overwhelmed when selected. He will be a very good player for the Blues and will look to follow and learn off David Armitage and Patrick Cripps.

Carlton - JOCK CORNELL - Pick 7 - Small Forward - 187cm/82kg
Carlton selected former Geelong player Jock Cornell with their first pick of the rookie draft. Cornell is a forward, who has the ability to play tall and small. He is very strong overhead and in his body and is a great running shot for goal. He has great evasive skills and is a good vertical leap. He will be behind guys like Jake Lloyd, Liam Sumner, James Rose and Marcos Atkins to start 2018, but will be looking to push for senior selection at some stage throughout the year.

Carlton - ALEX WOODWARD - Pick 24 - Outside Midfielder - 181cm/77kg
Carlton went down the experienced path with their second selection, picking up the luckless Alex Woodward. Woodward was the Hawthorn for 5 years, but struggled to get any continuity into his game as he had 3 knee reconstructions at Hawthorn. He will be hoping to have better luck at Carlton and is a great player, who can play on a wing, off the back flank or up forward. He has elite disposal and Carlton may be looking to utilise that throughout 2018.

Carlton - JERMAINE MILLER-LEWIS - Pick 41 - Outside Midfielder - 187cm/75kg
Carlton used their 3rd selection on former Hawthorn rookie Jermaine Miller-Lewis. Miller-Lewis is an outside midfielder who possesses great footskills and has the ability to play in defence if required. He is a great reader of the play and has great accleration, which the Blues will be looking forward to using in the coming years.

Lets have a look at how the new recruits from both sides went.

CARLTON
Rhys Stanley: Stanley lined up as the ruck for the Blues, coming up against Matthew Leuenberger and Shaun McKernan. He broke even with his counterpart Leuenberger, as Stanley finished with 18 touches, 10 marks, 25 hitouts and 3 inside 50s. It was an exceptional first performance from the former Cat.

Braden McKay: Braden finished with 13 touches and 3 marks in a solid first outing in the Navy Blue. He also had 3 inside 50s and 2 clearances.

Jake Lloyd: Lloyd was a little disappointing, only having the 6 touches and 1 goal. The Blues faithful will be hoping for a better outing next week.

ESSENDON
Shane Savage: Savage was BOG for St Kilda, with an equal high 34 touches. He also had 6 marks and laid an equal game high 7 tackles. It was an outstanding first game for Savage in the red and black.

Tom Phillips: Phillips was a late pick in the Pre Season draft and showed his talent against the Blues, finishing with 22 touches, 3 marks, 2 tackles and 2 goals. He also had an equal game high 8 clearances, highlighting his ability at the contest.

David Astbury: Astbury had a solid game, finishing with 16 touches and 5 marks. He manned Stewart Crameri for the day, but Crameri was able to kick 5 goals on him. The Dons would be hoping for a more defensive effort from Astbury next week.

Jack Newnes: Newnes was underwhelming in his first game for Essendon. He has 14 touches and 2 tackles. He would be hoping to have a much better performance in his 2nd game.

3 BLUES OUT WITH INJURY

Carlton have lost 3 players to injury, as they are feeling the toll of a demanding pre season.
Key midfielders David Armitage and Kade Simpson are out with an AC Joint and a wrist sprain. They will miss 4 and 2 weeks respectively.

Meanwhile, rookie Jermaine Miller-Lewis is out with a groin injury and will miss 4 weeks.

Rhys Stanley looks promising. It's hard to find the hard working across ground ruckman.
I'd be more than happy if I could get 18 disposals and 25 hit outs from my ruckmen.

ROUND 1 PREVIEW - CARLTON BLUES V GOLD COAST SUNS
14/3/2018

RARK MOBINSON
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

765500_thumb.jpg

Round 1 of the new season has arrived and it will see Carlton take on the reigning premiers Gold Coast at the MCG.

Carlton recruited 4 players via trade and 6 via the drafts. Rhys Stanley, Shaun Edwards, Jake Lloyd and Marcus Adams joined the Blues via trade and will all look to play integral parts in the Blues lineup.
The Blues only used 2 picks at the national draft, using them on father son Braden McKay and former West Coast midfielder Alec Waterman. Both are still young and have plenty of talent, but Waterman will be looking to make an early season debut after an impressive pre season.
They also picked up Rhys Mathieson via the pre season draft. Mathieson is a big bodied midfielder, who is mature enough to play a role when required.
The Blues picked up 3 new rookies in Jock Cornell, Alex Woodward and Jermaine Miller-Lewis. All have previous AFL experience and will add a lot to the Blues.

Gold Coast acquired the services of Ryan Nyhuis via the National draft and had a very quiet trade period. The Suns used their first round pick on tall forward Kyler Cushing and also picked up Keenan Ramsey and forward Gary Stokes. Their ruck department took a hit over the pre season with Dan Currie and Aaron Sandilands being delisted.

Carlton will play 5 of their recruits in this game, while the Suns will only unveil Ryan Nyhuis.

Clay Cameron is missing for the Suns, while Kade Simpson and David Armitage are still recovering from pre season niggles and will miss the game.

GOLD COAST START TITLE DEFENCE WITH A WIN, SHOWING TOO MUCH CLASS OVER BLUES

Match Summary
upload_2016-7-1_13-31-26.png

GOLD COAST has started their premiership defence campaign with a win over the Blues at the MCG. The Suns had too much class all over the field for the Blues and that was a deciding factor in the match.

Jack Martin got the first goal of 2018 for the Suns, before the Blues responded with the next 3 of the game. Patrick Cripps was on fire early, having 10 touches in the first 15 minutes of the game, while Callum Ah Chee relished his new role as a wingman with 6 touches in the same amount of time. Gold Coast started to peg back the margin, with goals to Tom Nicholls and David Swallow, before a 22nd minute major to Brandon Matera put the Suns in front. Jack Leslie slotted the last goal of the quarter to get the Suns quarter time lead out to 15 points. Patrick Cripps had 11 touches in the first term, while David Swallow and Callum Ah Chee had 10 a piece. Adam Saad had 9 and Aaron Hall 8, while Marcus Adams started off his career in the Navy Blue in perfect fashion, securing 7 touches in the first term.

The 2nd term was a goal fest to the Suns, as they slotted the first 5 of the quarter to show why they are the reigning premiers! Jack Leslie kicked his 2nd early on, before 2 majors to Aaron Hall extended the lead out to 33 points. Sam Day and new recruit Ryan Nyhuis slotted the next 2 goals for the Suns, before Carlton got their first of the term through Andrejs Everitt. Aaron Hall continued his good quarter slotting 2 more goals to make it 4 for the term, before Wylie Buzza slotted Carlton's 5th of the game, just before half time. The damage was done early on though, as the Suns lead by 44 points at half time. Callum Ah Chee had 21 touches to half time, while Aaron Hall had 16 touches to go with his 4 first half goals. Adam Saad also had 16 touches. Patrick Cripps slowed down a little in that quarter, only having the 5 touches, which took his tally to 16 for the game. Ciaran Byrne had 13, while Jack Silvagni had 12.

The 3rd term was very different to the 2nd as there was only 1 goal kicked for the quarter. Both sides had trouble getting it into the forward 50 and when they did, the opposition defence was good enough to repel. Carlton youngster Marcos Atkins kicked the only goal of the term, as the Blues had multiple chances to cut back the lead, but couldn't convert. Another thing that Brendon Bolton would have been pleased with was that they were able to keep Gold Coast scoreless in this term. The margin was 33 points at 3 quarter time. Callum Ah Chee led all comers with 29 touches, while Adam Saad had 25. Aaron Hall was Gold Coast's next best with 19, while midfield duo Jaeger O'Meara and David Swallow had 18 a piece. Patrick Cripps led the way for the Blues with 22 touches, while Bryce Gibbs had 21. James Rose had 17 and Matthew Wright 15.

The 4th term was tense all the way through as the Blues staged a mini comeback, but it wasnt enough to snatch victory. Jack Silvagni slotted the first goal of the quarter, before Ryan Nyhuis and Sam Day kicked the next 2 to extend the Suns lead. The Blues were looking for a game changer at this point, so the coaching staff decided to throw Blaine Boekhorst forward and it almost worked wonders for the Blues. Boekhorst was able to get 3 quick goals, but the Suns were able to hold off long enough to get their first win of 2018.

BRENDON BOLTON PRESSER
Q: A little disappointing to start the season off in this fashion, but your boys fought until the very end. You must have been happy with the effort they showed throughout the game, especially in the last term?
A: The effort was there from the lads, but not for long enough. That last quarter showed the kind of football we want to play, but we are too inconsistent at the moment. We are still a young side and still learning, so hopefully the consistency comes.

Q: You look to have recruited well over the summer, with guys like Rhys Stanley, Marcus Adams and Jake Lloyd coming to the club. But I think the player that took us by surprise was Alec Waterman. He played in your 2nd NAB challenge game and due to Armitage not playing today, he got a gig and showed all of us the talent he possesses.
A: Alec has worked hard all pre-season, with the aim to play some games early on, as he did today. I don't think we knew just how much of an impact he would have on the playing group. He trains harder than anyone else and it showed today. 22 touches and 6 tackles is a great game. His work with Cripps in the middle of the group was outstanding, with those two having 13 clearances for the day.

Q: It looked like you were a bit surprised by the way Callum Ah Chee played today. He was the main link up man for the Suns and absolutely tore you guys apart on the outside. I'm assuming that you didn't focus on him throughout the week, considering the midfield that the Suns have in Ablett, Swallow, Prestia etc.
A: He didn't come up in too much discussion this week as we were more focused on stopping the big names. This probably was a major factor in the game as we knew how he played, but wasn't expecting the performance he put up today against us. He definitely will be in discussions next time we play them.

Carlton travel to South Australia to take on the Adelaide Crows in round 2.
Carlton are coming off a disappointing loss to the Suns, while the Crows scraped a win over Essendon by 2 points.

Carlton will be without big man Matthew Kreuzer for 3 weeks after he injured his AC Joint in a ruck drill at training throughout the week.
Veteran Kade Simpson should return, while the Blues may give midfielder David Armitage another week's rest due to the good form of Alec Waterman.

Adelaide have made two changes to their side that beat Essendon, omitting Xavier Ellis and losing Brad Crouch to suspension. Jarryd Lyons and Chris Masten come into the side.
