I thought Bird definitely played his best game so far yesterday. It wasn't a good game, but he seemed to get into a little more. I think Roos should give him a few more games, hopefully Schmidt or Fossie will be ready by then.

I had big expectations for Bird but so far he has failed to meet them. If Schmidt or Fossie is available then I think Bird will be the first one to be dropped.

I like Bird he does some great things its just weighed down by slip ups which everyone does and im guessing the number 14 on his back is why everyone thinks he has 2 be great

Anyway i dont think our loss was that bad
its Geelong and we proved that you can break them down and get within range we almost kept them scoreless in the third term (stupid jimmy)

I think our downfall was the fall off of our big names Magic goodes Davis very very quiet

The loss of tiger hurt 2 but i think we did well

very proud of the boys work 2day

Geelong are just a great team

Who was the free against? Mattner stood the mark, so we'll just blame him.

Nat you are in a bad mood today aren't you.

Having jusat watched a replay (God it was hard not to find out the score) I thought we were good for most of the game, though Geelong hit a switch late and turned it up and we could not up the anti.

A serious concern and criticism many of us have denied was during the time we controlled the match we failed to put the score on the board. O'Loughlan got beaten by Scarlett and we were unable to find another avenue to goal. O'Keefe and Goodes could have been more accurate but our scoring system was shut down and we must credit Thompson for winning that coaching strategy.

I thought Smith had a good debut against a pressure team and though Craig Bird played the best game he has so far and his disposal has improved from round 1.

We had a few guys who played well in patches and faded at other times, Barlow and Buchanan spring to mind. Bevan played a good game and I don’t blame him for failing on G.Ablett when moved to him, G.Ablett is too classy for him, for all of us by the looks of it. .

Mattner got tired late in the game and errors were made but I thought he was pretty good. O'Keefe and Jude Bolton were solid, I thought J.Bolton tried to lift his intensity today.

The best two though were Richards on Mooney and Jolly performed in the ruck and presented a target to kick to today, very happy with that.

But Geelong were too good for us at the end and it must be acknowledged.

Not sure if you guys want us sticking our noses in here, but I thought Jolly rucked really well, beat Blake and West and was a primary reason why you were winning the clearances out of the centre.

Your welcome to post here, and we don’t mind debate, just no trolling like umpteen West Coast supporters tried last week.

Thanks for the compliment and good luck, you guys have a great side and are great to watch... when were not playing them.

Jolly was one our best players yesterday which is to be expected with the amount we are paying him (we had to give up Schneider). We really need Spida back though as the Swans gameplan requires the domination of the clearances which is hard to do when you only have 1 full time ruckman and are also relying on a lanky defender to help out.

Smith was crap.
Rubbish. Made a few mistakes, but it is a big jump from Ressies to Seniors. 14 touches on debut, 3 marks and 2 tackles.

He made a couple of errors, but you can see his hand good run and carry and good skills. He will improve. Kennelly will replace him next week anyway, but if he can add some size, I reckon he'll make it.

True. I thought Bird had more of the ball today but he really needs to work on disposing them quickly. He always gets pinged at least once in every game he has played for us so far. I've witnessed some really great hard ball gets from this kid. But, to be honest, after round 3 I was itching for him to get dropped, didn't play as well I hoped he would. But, I'll give him a few more runs in the senior level; thats probably the only way to help him improve.

Bird had 13 touches, 4 marks. 84.62% disposal efficiency (4th highest in team). He has not yet worked out how much space he has in AFL, and that is why he keeps getting pinged for HTB. The other thing with AFL, is that you rely on your team mates to let you know how much space you have. You have to wonder whether this is being done properly.

We need to work on our disposal efficency as a team. Very ordinary at the moment. Funniest bit about the game? Brennan was our highest in DE. 87.5%

I agree whole heartedly with this assessment. Our midfield lacked the class but I mustn't write off how we tried to match them. We did at times and won it, but obviously with the likes of G.Ablett, Wunjuski(sp?) and Stokes bursting in the middle of the packs, its really hard. Kudos to Buchanan, C.Bolton (who spent some time in the midfields), Goodes and McVeigh.

I knew we couldn't win it, but its just quite disappointing that we lost by 42 points. Like I said before, the scoreline didn't give us justice in the end knowing how close we were...

Our midfield lacked the class b

Put simply we missed Kennelly, and to a lesser extent Malceski.
We get so much drive from our half back line, that they are essentially midfielders. We missed that yesterday. They are our flashy midfielders ... quarter backs if you like.

A couple of errors? He had 5 clangers and his effective disposal % was 42.86, second worst after ROK. He was crap.

i thought smith was ordinary, nothing like how jack and bird have been, but it would've been hard for him first up against the cats
bird was good, ROK was good early, but if we're talking about clangers and stuff-ups, and if someone hasn't already mentioned it, can i now bring up mattner
his kicking was even worse than his first few weeks, which were pretty bad
he's so brave, an outstanding tackler, but he's as bad as brennan for kicking errors
i think two led directly to geelong goals early

Mattner really shouldn't be doing the kick ins. Last week my sister and I were saying that one day is going to cost us a game with his kick ins and I think it would be fair to say that he pretty much did that yesterday. Not so much costing us the game, but giving Geelong a goal in the last quarter which really pumped them up and after that they really put their foot on the pedal.

yep, it's been a matter of time before his kicks came back to bite us, and they did yesterday
and it was just heckin'g amazing that he was allowed to keep taking them
and mattner also gets caught with the ball a bit too often
in fact, he seems to have taken the role leo played last year
whereas leo has been really good this season

Ryan O'Keefe should be dropped on that premise.

For a kid of his size to come into the team, I AM IMPRESSED about what he'll be able to offer in the future.

He has an excuse of coming from the reserves up. The senior players have no excuses for their poor disposal.

To even get the ball 14 times on debut is BRILLIANT. What he does with it can be worked on.

Who else to do them? Kennelly and Malceski who would normally take them, are out...

i'd rather someone like luke ablett, just someone to roost the ball outside our 50m defensive area, at this stage i don't care if it goes to a contest in the centre square, as long as it's not a direct stuff-up inside the defensive 50m
because this stupid wait, then a short chip to a bloke standing still, is just killing us

Where did I say that he should be dropped? Nowhere.. because I don't want him to be dropped. I said he was crap, I wasn't calling for his head.

Anyone. After he screwed it a certain amount of times then they really should have changed it. Anyway, Tadhg was there last week and Mattner was still taking the kick ins.. same with the previous games aswell. He seems to be the kick in guy now and he is absolutely rubbish at it.

Well i've just got back from Skilled Stadium......yes it took that long to get out from the Ablett Terrace. I don't know how it passes health and safety regulations. If there was a fire, we'd all be dead.

On to the serious stuff though, i thought we did extremely well to hold the cats for as long as we did and i truly believe the scoreline is not a proper indication of how well we played. Again at Skilled, it was a slow start that really hurt us along with our early inaccuracy. The second quarter was fantastic with a few cutting runs matching Geelong for daring and flair. We ran out of steam at the end but as i said, i am surprised we held them for as long as we did.

I think some of the your calls on Mattner are a bit harsh. The kick out that was turned over wasn't that bad, it was made worse by the receiving player propping and waiting rather than leading up to it.

Davis while no where near his best did quite well just pressuring as Geelong tried to rebound out of defense and set up two goals, one with a little flair and one with good, honest hard work.

I think all the young kids should be applauded as for most of the match it was them that we were praising for their deft touches and good vision.

DJ was magnificent and by far BOG.

I thought Teddy did a fantastic job on Mooney, who i feel was beaten well. He got a cheap goal late and was frustrated all day, to the point where he swung at and appeared to strike one of our players (i think it was Richards). I hope it was caught on camera but for memory 50 wasn't given despite the umpire standing and watching the whole thing.

From what we could see Bartel's free was because the catters hadn't kicked a goal for a while with the the Geelong folk refusing to claim it or Bartel for that matter.

All up, the pussies are a fantastic side (i hope they win every game this year and choke in the GF ;) ) and we did pretty darn well.

Its great to read stuff from those who actually went to the game. It took you more than a day to get home.. i'm astonished.

But what was the real reason as to why Jimmy got that free kick?

It didn't really take that long, but imagine 3500 people trying to get out of a ground through a walk way wide enough for three people.... hence the sarcasm about the length of time it took. I'm actually from the other side of Melbourne to Geelong but with the tunnels and stuff we have here now it only takes about an hour and a half to get home.

I was however, being truly serious about the free kick to Bartel. No one at the ground knew what it was for and by Bartel's reaction he didn't either. The short bit of replay they showed on the screen at the ground showed nothing that you could pick up. The radio station i was listening to was confused as well. Oh well, thats four trips down there for 0 wins. It's gotta happen sooner or later:rolleyes:
