We Don't Need New Players

The club has committed to topping up when needed, very hard for the club to turn around and say to Danger, Selwood, Duncan, Tuohy, Henderson that we are going to just draft young players and you wont play in GF anymore.
Ummmm, they absolutely dropped the ball against Melbourne in the final, these guys. Yet we owe them to top up?o_O

For seasons now I kept on about building what we got (ie get some freaking skill into the squad), but I was always told Dangerfield/Ablett/Henderson etc will save us! Well, that plan doesn't work. All I have to say to that is , derrr!

Might have worked for Hawthorn when they were already on top. Didn't work for Sydney, and hasn't worked for us. It keeps you in the 8, and you get a couple of decent wins during the H&A season. But we end up bringing a pop-gun to a gunfight in the finals every year.

Club will be committed to getting the side to the finals each year and what ever it takes to do that.

So, club is committed to being irrelevant forever? Because we ain't going to challenge for the GF ever if we go down that path.
As we have seen with Collingwood and West coast not the best teams but they played good football at the right time.

If the club had any balls (which I doubt), they could say tough shit to that group of players, you aren’t entitled to anything, and you play for the club. Not the other way around.

Individually, you could also say:

- to Dangerfield: It would be nice if you could involve your teammates on the field. It would be nice if you stopped playing as a selfish egomaniac. And if you could kick the ball within the same postcode as your teammates that would be great too.

- to Selwood: That was really macho and impressive the way you gave away a free kick when Hawkins was about to kick for goal. Inspirational. Tagging is part of the job, stop being petulant and deal with it.

- to Duncan: Try not to fall over. The game is easier when you’re upright.

- to Tuohy: Finals are the games that actually matter. Those strange creatures you avoid on the field are called opponents. When you’re a defender you’re meant to stand next to them every now and then.

- to Henderson: We gave up a first round pick for you. Any chance you could not turn to shit in finals for once?

Well should we just trade them all out and see what picks we can get?

I for one would be happy to vote you in as GFC Head of Player Motivation for 2019.

I’d prefer to get those players to focus on their individual strengths and how it serves the team best. Henderson needs to be aware he might see plenty of VFL.
Only two locks in defence are Stewart and Tuohy, the rest need solid pre season.

Collingwood has been building for years. But the media and supporters could not see it, because Buckley - apparently - wasn't all that interested about being "relevant". Hasn't been in the finals since 2013! Let me tell you that if Collingwood win it next week (they have a show), they will be relevant. Even if they look dangerous and lose they will be relevant. We aren't, and you can't play good football at the right time if you aren't even aiming to win it all. We play like we are happy to make the finals. Like you say.

Dangerfield seems too content in the role of Big Kahuna in the team. Reminds me of a country footballer gun player type.

There is a kicking contest being/been held with players mothers. Dangerfields mum one of the. Listening to her talk about her kicking suggests that she could teach her son a thing or two about kicking the Sherrin.

and Bews.
Have to say if he hadnt got injuried at the time he did, he would have been dropped offers very little going forward and was struggling to stop his man in the weeks before his injury, certainly not an automatic lock in at the back.

Well, if rumour is true, one would throw a chair and one would miss anyhow

I am more optimistic
about him. He has got a good defender's mentality. I saw he got beat a few times. But...

We need to refresh the side. Need a change of attitude. Do whatever it takes.
This means changes to the team and coaching approach.

  • get motivational trainers (half our problems are in our team and coaches heads) How can we loose to so many lowly rated sides? How can we get pumped so often in the first quarter of the final series? This is all about preperation and motivation.
  • refresh our assistant coaches (Johnson, Chris Newman). We have been static for too long. PS Make sure Scarlett stays. Is he senior coaching material??
  • draft for speed with good disposal (ala Wojo). Need a couple of line breakers.
  • inject some agro (Scarlett, Chapman, Milburn, Bartel). Way too many soft players in our side. We are too gentile.
  • do not draft so many injury prone players (half our list.....where do you start!)
  • play the right youth (Constable and Narkle as often as possible instead of a Parsons type)
  • improve our MC picks. Some of their choices are unbelievable
  • play the players in their correct positions that suit them now not what has in the past. (Ablett HFF, Danger forward arc, Selwood condider paying him in the backline, Blicavs at FB)
  • do not change a structure that works well by rushing back experienced players that are unfit. Play them in the seconds until ready (Henderson and Taylor) Retire one of these two players
  • Pray that Cocky and Ratugolea stay on the park as they are what we miss
  • If Kelly is going home do it now and get an upgraded pick from Freo if possible. Great player and will be missed but we need players 100% committed to us.
  • Give Stewart a pay rise
  • Play man on man more often instead of the roaming zone
It is not a simple matter of papering over the cracks. I hope we do not get the typical Scottt response... "we know what it is but it is to difficult to explain as we would not understand" I would come out with the review results after the drafting is completed, no rush. But do it and act!!!

I hope the club is also committed to a half empty stadium because that's what will happen when the team drops off. They don't fill it now.

Either that or pray that there are always 5-6 crap teams we play in Geelong every year, because this season without that we wouldn't have made the finals.

Only time this is in doubt is if the interstate teams collectively are dominant. Even then, all of them except Sydney drop their bundle down at Geelong anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if we get a replica season next year, based on 7 or 8 KP wins.
