Round 14

Sunday, June 19 2016

THE Showdown ends what's expected to be a great round of football in round 14. The Showdown, where form and ladder positions don't matter and where everyone in SA watches the TV to see who the best team in SA really is.
Each year the Showdown gets bigger and bigger and this one is going to mean a lot to both sides. Both teams are hovering around the middle of the ladder after 13 rounds and a win here really could be the win to get one of their seasons back on track. A loss could really spell an end to a season for the looser.

Form and ladder position never count when these two sides play against each other with every Showdown a tough contest and an even ball game.
Adelaide has made just the one forced change to the side that sustained a shock loss against the Bombers last weekend with Charlie Cameron suspended for a week on his umpire contact charge while youngster Wayne Milera comes back into the side after spending the last 2 weeks in the SANFL gaining some form.

Crows win Showdown to keep season in tact
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE has come away with a 8 point victory in Showdown 40 in front of 51,777 fans at Adelaide Oval to keep their 2016 season in tact. Adelaide kicked away in the first quarter however the Power kicked back and had the contest below 2 goals for the rest of the contest. Adelaide was too good on the afternoon and just wanted the W more then the Power.

Adelaide's onballer Rory Sloane has come away with the Showdown medal after starring on the day continuing his great season with 34 disposals, 7 inside 50's and kicked 2.1 for the afternoon. Crows captain Taylor Walker was unlucky to have not won the award with his 23 disposals and 5.2 effort from the forward half, but it was Sloane in the dying seconds that was immense for the Crows to get them their 6th win of the season.
A good win in Showdown 40 however the afternoon was dampened with 2 major injuries to 2 Crows players.
Brad Crouch's unlucky run with injury has continued with the young midfielder suffering what has been called as a severe back injury and early diagnosis is that he'll miss 8 weeks as he allows the injury to heal. Back injuries are always tough ones, the Crows have said 2 months yet could be much longer, if you could remember Jesse Hogan missed an entire season in 2014 due to a back complaint.

And that injury was outdone by first round draft selection Wayne Milera who has suffered a horrific broken leg in a sickening landing when he went up to take a mark in a contest with Matthew Broadbent. Milera is most likely to miss the remainder of the season due to the injury and both injuries are huge blows to the Crows who have already missed Daniel Talia who has missed the past 7 matches with injury.

Apart from the horrible injuries to 2 young players, the Crows had a good win on the track and keeps their season in tact. As mentioned earlier, Rory Sloane won the Showdown medal with 34 possessions and 2.1
Matt Crouch found plenty of the pill playing through the midfield with the younger Crouch brother picking up 32 disposals and 9 inside 50's while the older Crouch brother had a great match before the injury picking up 30 disposals and 9 clearances. Brodie Smith's run and carry on the wing was a highlight with 32 disposals and 6 tackles after a good run of form over the past fortnight.

Taylor Walker finished with 5.2 for the afternoon while 5 players each kicked 2 goals in Douglas, Jenkins, Betts, Lynch and Sloane.
It was an even performance from the Crows who really didn't have too many passengers on the day which pleased coach Hayden Sumner.

"We got an even spread this afternoon and that was a great sight to see. We really focused on the things that went wrong against the Bombers last week and I thought the players really responded with what we wanted them to do.
I'm pleased we were able to get the 4 points and keep the season on track, we just need to keep the belief in the playing group and keep the side winning to make finals. It's one week at a time and now we turn our attention to St.Kilda at Adelaide Oval next Sunday.

On the 2 injuries that occurred today, it's disappointing to see Brad go down again. He was gaining some good form after missing the entire 2015 season. We know the character of the guy though, he'll take the injury with a grain of salt and be back hopefully bigger and better then ever.
Milera's break looked horrendous really, he knew straight away that there was a break and it's a blow for him and the club. It's always horrible to see a player go down with injury, but to see a 1st year player sustain a bad injury like this does sting a little more then normal.
He'll do everything right to get himself back by the end of the season. Even though he's young, he's a professional.

Crows upgrade rookie big man
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE has upgrade rookie Reilly O'Brien to the senior list in place of injured midfielder Brad Crouch who has been put on the long term injury list. Crouch who missed the entire 2015 season through injury, injured his back in the match against the Power on the weekend which led to the upgrade to O'Brien.
Adelaide will also be without number 1 ruck, Sam Jacobs for the match coming up against the Saints hence the even more need to upgrade O'Brien from the rookie list which 90% guarantees him a debut against the Saints on Sunday.

O'Brien has been on the Crows list for 2 seasons now and has impressed in some NAB challenge games in recent years. O'Brien who has had a good SANFL year stands at 201cm and 98kg with the 20 year old looking to make a good first impression in what could be his first AFL match.
The Crows also have the chance to play ex-Hawk ruck/forward Luke Lowden who has also been in good SANFL form of late as a backup to Sauce Jacobs in the ruck.

Round 15
Sunday, June 26 2016

After a stellar Showdown win last weekend the Crows are back at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon to take on the struggling St.Kilda football club from 3.20pm. Adelaide has a chance to gain back to back wins, something that has been difficult for them to achieve in season 2016 however a win against the Saints will see the Crows edge closer and close the gap on the 2 game difference between 8th and 9th spot at the moment.

Adelaide even though had the win last weekend have had to make 3 forced changes all due to injury after a bruising Showdown 40. As we know already, Brad Crouch will miss up to 9 weeks with a severe back strain while young gun Wayne Milera horrifically broke his leg in a marking contest to see him miss the next 8 weeks as well. Sam Jacobs was the unknown throughout the week however won't play against the Saints due to a groin strain.

With the long term injury to Brad Crouch, Adelaide had the freedom to upgrade a rookie in which they upgraded 20 year old Reilly O'Brien who has been named to make his AFL debut with the injury to Sauce Jacobs. O'Brien stands at 201cm tall and will go up against two other youngsters in Tom Hickey and Billy Longer.
Troy Menzel and Charlie Cameron return to the side in the absence of Milera and Crouch while Mitch Grigg has been omitted from the side with Riley Knight comes in for his first match of the season.

No Jacobs, no Crouch, no Milera and no Talia = no worries for the Crows
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE has gone on to win their round 15 clash against the St.Kilda Saints at Adelaide without 3 of their star players and without a first year young gun. Adelaide were missing Sam Jacobs, Brad Crouch, Daniel Talia and youngster Wayne Milera all due to injury but were still able to come out with a comfortable victory of 25 points.

In front of 41,248 at Adelaide Oval, the Crows scored their 7th win of the year to sit in 10th position on the AFL ladder closing in on getting back in the top 8. Adelaide was well led by skipper Taylor Walker who had 22 disposals and kicked 6.1 for the night to be arguably best on ground while it was the emergence and debut game of Reilly O'Brien that really impressed the fans and football world.
Social media blew up with the Crows 20 year old who was upgraded to the senior list with Brad Crouch being put on the LTI list was named to play his first match and produced a great debut.
The 201cm youngster came in for Jacobs who was injured and produce the following stats. 22 disposals, 6 marks, 18 hitouts, 1 tackle and 4 inside 50's in what could produce a rising star nomination.

Scott Thompson and Josh Jenkins kicked multiple goals for the Crows while they had a even spread of single goal scorers.
Adelaide midfielder Matt Crouch really relished without his older brother with the younger sibling picking up 33 touches along with 9 inside 50's while Rory Sloane has had 30+ disposals on 12 of the 15 matches played this season. He will certainly poll well when it comes to Brownlow night.

zstlah.jpg

Adelaide coach Hayden Sumner had this to say when we caught up with him after the match.
"I was pleased we were able to get the win without some of our starting players. Pretty impressed with some of our youngsters tonight which just shows the great depth we have at the club at the moment. You see guys like Mitch Grigg, Jarryd Lyons, Mitch McGovern and Cameron Ellis-Yolmen all playing well in the SANFL throughout the year and you can rely on these guys to perform when they get called upon. We have great belief in our youngsters and our reserves system that we can have guys come in and play senior footy when we need them.

Reilly O'Brien was fantastic tonight, after that performance it'd be hard to see if Jacobs can come back in and like I mentioned earlier, guys like Lowden, O'Brien and Paul Hunter are all playing in the SANFL as well putting pressure on Sauce in which tonight we were able to see that O'Brien can come straight in when we need him and perform at the level and really hold his own against AFL ruckman.
I was also impressed with Jarryd Lyons tonight who got an extended run through the midfield with the absence of Crouch. I think he finished with 24 and 8 clearances. He is another that has had to wait his time in the SANFL but now has an interrupted run at playing consistent senior footy with the injuries we do have, so if he can perform like he did tonight for the rest of the season, I see why he can't play the remainder of the games.

Reilly O'Brien wins Rising Star Nomination on debut
_______________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE'S ruckman, Reilly O'Brien has received the Round 15 rising star nomination after his excellent debut game against the Saints on Sunday afternoon. O'Brien who had a big week starting from being upgraded to the senior list after the club found out that Brad Crouch was going to head onto the long term injury list. O'Brien then got the news that Sam Jacobs was going to miss through injury and that he would be making his debut against the Saints on Sunday afternoon.

The 20 year old stands at 201cm and 98kgs was very good against the Saints ruckman in Longer and Hickey. O'Brien finished with 22 disposals, 6 marks and 18 hitouts next to his name. Of the 6 marks, 4 of them were contested in which the Crows have been screaming out for in a big man for a while now.
O'Brien's great start to his career can only be a good thing for the Crows who now have a selection headache with Sauce Jacobs coming back into the side barring injury.

Round 16

Sunday, July 3 2016

We head to the GABBA for the Round 16 clash between the 6th place Brisbane Lions taking on 10th place Adelaide Crows in what is expected to be a good contest between the two sides.
Adelaide has had the wood over the Lions in recent years and after a solid win against the Saints last weekend, the Crows who are missing some key quality players are digging deep to keep in touch with the top 8. If they can get a win against a top 8 side here will give them a lot of confidence heading into the later part of the season.

Adelaide has made just the one change to the side that beat the Saints last weekend with big man Sam Jacobs coming back into the side after missing last weekend with an injury, while Reilly O'Brien keeps his position in the side after a very dominant performance in his debut game, while Brodie Smith has injured himself and is set to miss the next 5 weeks as the Crows injury lists seems to keep on growing.

Adelaide keeps on keeping on, with win against Brisbane
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE with all their injuries has come out and beaten the Brisbane Lions who were sitting pretty in the top 6 to keep their top 8 ambitions alive with a 12 point victory up at the GABBA.
Adelaide, who before the match were missing, Daniel Talia, Brad Crouch, Wayne Milera and now Brodie Smith throughout the week were really on the back foot with so many injuries to starting players, and with an injury to David Mackay throughout the contest against the Lions, they should be proud the club has come away with the 4 points.

Adelaide's inspirational skipper Tex Walker finished the night off in style for the Crows with another bag this time kicking 7.1 for the night which was the 9th time he has scored 5 or more goals in a game this season out of the 16 that he's played. Walker has seen himself gone into 2nd position on the Crows all time goal scoring list with the GOD, Tony Modra only above him, but with the way Walker is playing he could reach that milestone held by Modra within the next year. Tex Walker has cleared ahead of the Coleman medal leading by 3 goals with 75 for the year with his old team mate Kurt Tippett second in second with 72.
Walker was well helped up forward with Josh Jenkins who was able to spend the entire game in the forward line with having 2 main ruckman in O'Brien and Jacobs in the side, Jenkins was able to stay forward and finished with 13 possessions and 3.1 for the afternoon.

Eddie Betts was roaming around and finished with 2 goals, as did David Mackay and Tom Lynch, the Crows forward line really gelled together up at the GABBA this afternoon.
Huge numbers for some of the Crows midfielders with Rory Sloane who had 11 inside 50's, 6 clearances and 35 disposals while Matt Crouch worked in tandem with Sloane as he finished with 28 disposals and 10 inside 50's.
Kyle Hartigan was huge for the defenders picking up 21 disposals and having a career high 12 spoils next to his name. Without Talia, Hartigan has really stepped in the shoes for the Crows to take the big forwards and with the lack of forwards for the Lions, the Crow was able to pick up plenty of the football.

Paul Seedsman was another who benefited from the extended midfield time with the ex-Pie picking up 21 disposals and had a game high 10 clearances, which is a solid effort from a guy who is known for his outside work.

2vsnrio.jpg

Another dower note for the Crows was an injury to midfielder David Mackay who is also looking likely to miss an extended time off the park after injuring his quad and early diagnosis is that he'll miss at least a month.
Mackay joins a big injury list at the Crows with Talia, Brad Crouch, Wayne Milera and Brodie Smith all missing.

The Crows who are now sitting in 9th position on the ladder, head to Etihad Stadium next Saturday night to play against the Western Bulldogs who are struggling big time in 16th position with only the 2 wins from the season. These two sides had played one of the best finals/games you have seen in recent memory in the elimination final in 2015 and now fast forward 12 months and one side is on the verge of making another finals campaign whereas the other side is struggling down the bottom of the ladder.

Round 17

Saturday, June 9 2016

With a win here against one of the bottomed placed Western Bulldogs the Crows could find themselves in the top 8 after the end of the round if other results go their way. Adelaide has been battling between the 9th and 14th position on the ladder for most of the season but can finally get themselves back into the 8 with a win here against the Dogs.

These two sides played in a hectic elimination final in 2015 however both sides seemed to have gone "backwards" in terms of ladder position. Adelaide is probably more around the same mark, while the Bulldogs have certainly gone backwards sitting in 16th position with just 2 wins next to their name. Not too sure what's gone from down at the Kennel in 2016 however things need to change and a big scalp in the Crows at Etihad would be the perfect start.

Adelaide has made 2 changes to the side with Dean Gore and Mitch Grigg both coming into the side with the absence of David Mackay (injured) and Curtly Hampton (omitted)

Bulldogs play with heart but Crows back in the top 8
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

ANOTHER cracking contest between these two sides has just occurred at Etihad Stadium with the Adelaide Crows winning the match by 9 points. Adelaide went on to win the elimination final last season by 10 points so the teams seem to be evenly matched despite the ladder positions this season. It was the closest the Bulldogs have gotten to winning a match since their last win. It was a high scoring affair but the Crows had the last laugh and now have found themselves back in the top 8 nearing the end of the season.

With just 7 weeks before the finals, the Crows needed to win which they did before facing off against Collingwood at the MCG next Sunday afternoon.
A point separated the two sides at quarter time before the Bulldogs kicked away to a 11 point lead heading into the half time break.
But it was a last desperate attempt in the final quarter where the Crows were able to win the contest. Down by 21 points at three quarter time the Crows really dug deep in the last to outscore the Bulldogs kicking 7.2 to 2.2 to record their 9th win of the season.

Adelaide captain Taylor Walker was outstanding for the away side kicking 6.2 for the evening backing up his excellent performance against the Dogs in last years Elimination final.
Walker was too good for the young Bulldogs defenders, gathering plenty of possession (21 disposals) and taking 3 marks to go with his high goal scoring opportunities. Adelaide's forwards Eddie Betts and Josh Jenkins finished with 2 goals apiece while the Crows were able to get some scoring opportunities from there midfielders with Mitch Grigg and Matt Crouch both scoring 2 goals as well.

The Bulldogs didn't have much of the ball however certainly made the most of their opportunities when given the chance. Adelaide dominated the disposal count 490 to 205 however only won the contest by 9 points. Certainly not a way the Crows wanted to win with the amount of possession yet only winning by a small margin, however credit to the Bulldogs when they did have possession they were able to score.
The amount of possession the Crows had, they also were firing and putting the Bulldogs defense under extreme pressure with 54 entries inside 50 while the Dogs managed 26, again credit to the Bulldogs defenders and forwards.

ADELAIDE was well served through the midfield with star midfielder Rory Sloane continuing his great season with another 33 disposal match. Sloane was a big work horse for the Crows are really set the standard early in the match. It wasn't until the last quarter until you really noticed how valuable Sloane is to the Crows with the work horse taking crunch marks and 1%ers nearing the end of the contest when the Crows were under attack by the Bulldogs with just minutes left on the clock.
Paul Seedsman played arguably his best game for his new club with the ex-Pie picking up 27 disposals, 8 clearances and kicked 1.1 for the evening. Seedsman has become a vital cog in the Crows line-up in 2016 giving the Crows a much needed edge in the pace category.

For the Bulldogs, it was a case of so close yet so far as they fell short by 9 points. Jackson MaCrae was huge for the Bulldogs with the skinny midfielder picking up a career high 36 disposals and kicked 2 goals to probably be the best on ground in a loosing side. Lachie Hunter was a good coy for MaCrae having 33 disposals and 7 clearances and then it was a real even contribution for the rest of the Dogs squad apart from the two standouts.

Kieran Collins finished with 3 goals while Will Minson, Jackson MaCrae, Josh Dunkley and Tom Boyd all finished with 2 goals.

Adelaide now sits in 8th position on the AFL ladder with just 7 weeks remaining needing to keep winning as the competition for spots is really heating up. The Bulldogs are no hope to make the finals and are sitting in 16th position with just the 2 wins for the year, but have the luxury of playing some kids to give them a taste of AFL football before the year is out. Adelaide goes on to face the Magpies at the MCG next weekend making it 2 Melbourne matches in consecutive weeks to keep their 2016 alive.

Scott Thompson to notch up 300th AFL match

ADELAIDE Crow, Scott Thompson is set to become the Crows 5th player to play over 300 AFL games this weekend against the Magpies at the MCG. Thompson, who began his career back in 2001 with the Melbourne Football club, played 39 games for the Demons and has been a mainstay in the Crows midfield for the best part of 11 years.

Thompson who played his 250th Adelaide Crows match back in round 3 has now entered elite company with the Crows with only the quartet of McLeod, Ricciuto, Hart and Edwards as the only 300 games for the Crows.
Thompson 32, has had a consistent season with the Crows in 2016 and has not said if it'll be his last or not. If he continues playing good football like his 2016 season he could easily go around again in 2017 for the Crows, something he'll need to think about over the next 7 weeks.

Round 18
Sunday, June 17 2016

Finals season is near and this round 18 clash between the 7th placed Collingwood Magpies vs the 8th placed Adelaide Crows at the MCG in what will be Adelaide's midfielder Scott Thompson's 300th AFL match between two clubs, Melbourne and Adelaide.
This contest could very well determine which side could be playing finals in 2016 even though there's still plenty of matches left in the year.

Adelaide has come off a very good win against the Western Bulldogs last weekend at Etihad Stadium and travel to Melbourne for the second week in a row to play the Pies at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. Adelaide have gone in un-changed for the contest with the Pies with still a handful of first picked players injured and missing from the side. Daniel Talia, Brad Crouch, Brodie Smith, Wayne Milera and David Mackay are all set to miss again with the Crows boasting a lot of youngsters in the side with Lyons, Grigg, Gore and Knight all getting plenty of game time heading into the final months of the home and away season.

Collingwood win close contest as Thompson has 300th he'd rather forget
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

COLLINGWOOD has put a stump in the Crows finals charge with the boys from Victoria park winning a close contest by 9 points at the MCG in front of a big crowd for a Pies Sunday game of 67,682 that could result in the Pies playing finals in 2016 and the Crows not.
It was a tough tight battle from these two sides who had plenty to play for, but it was the Pies who had the last laugh.

Collingwood evened the ledger with the Crows in 1-1 for the season with the last meeting a 5 point victory to the Crows back in round 1 at Adelaide oval. Both contests were tight and we as spectators hope to see the two clubs meet again in September.
Collingwood started the better of the two clubs seeming to be more fierce at the ball and not allowing the Crows to gain possession through the midfield. Adelaide bought the game back to near level terms at half time only trailing by 2 points heading into the half time break.

The second half was much of the same as the first half, either side couldn't get anymore then 2 goals in front, and when they did look to gather the momentum away from the opposition, the opposition was able to find a way to score quickly and bring the margin back to level terms.
It was an entertaining contest but the Pies had the better last quarter which they snuck home with kicking 5 goals to 3 in the last term.
Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury continued his fantastic season with a dominant display of midfield presence with 40 possessions and a career high 12 tackles while each of Alex Fasolo, Steele Sidebottom and Taylor Adams all had 33 disposals. Brent Macaffer and Jack Crisp both finished off with 31 and 30 possessions respective while they were well led up forward with Jeremy Howe (4 goals) and Travis Cloke (3 goals) as the focal points in the forward half.

Collingwood dominated possession winning the count 402-295 and the tackle count 62-37 however the Crows ruckman had the better out of the rucks with 44 hitouts to 29. Collingwood did well reading the oppositions ruckman hitouts winning the clearances 40 to 23 with guys like Fasolo (7 clearances) and Crisp (6 clearances) leading the way in the Pies newly looked midfield group. Scott Pendlebury is the obvious leader through the middle but with guys like Fasolo, Treloar, Adams and Sidebottom going through the midfield it allows for Pendlebury and Swan to play more up forward as their careers are starting to wind down.

For the Crows, they'd be disappointed with the result considering it was club champion Scott Thompson's 300th AFL match. The work horse has been a warrior for the Crows over the past decade in bad and the good times for the Crows, but today wasn't his day as Collingwood went on to win the contest.
It was a hard fought contest between the two sides and the Crows would have been a little weary considering the travel to Melbourne 2 weeks in a row however they didn't really have a star on the day. Rory Sloane who has had 30+ disposals on 14 occasions from 18 matches this season was well held and only managed just the 11 touches.

Jarryd Lyons was the best performed Crow going by amount of disposals picking up 24 touches along with 7 clearances. Defender Rory Laird found plenty of the ball considering the amount of times the ball was in the Crows defense with the little defender picking up 21 disposals with 10 rebound 50's and 11 contested possessions. Sam Jacobs was the best performed Crow on the day though with the big man finding his early season form with 20 disposals, 6 marks, 31 hitouts and 3 inside 50s.

Big Tex Walker tried his best to keep the Crows in the contest and finished with 5.1 from his 12 disposals while Josh Jenkins could be unhappy with his goal kicking kicking 2.3 for the afternoon and considering the Crows lost by 9 points, could be really kicking himself and think to kick 2 of those goals and the Crows win.
Adelaide head back out of the top 8 to 9th position and with the bye next weekend could look at getting a few players back from injury to really push their claim for finals in the remainder 5 weeks of the season.

Round 20

Saturday, June 30 2016

Only 5 weeks left in the season and this contest is shaping up to be one of the contests of the year with Richmond sitting in 6th position with 11 wins for the year, 2 games ahead of the Crows who are in 9th position fighting for a finals berth and a win against the Tigers will go a long way to achieving that.
Adelaide oval will be buzzing on Saturday night with the home side bringing back some star names with the main one being Daniel Talia who has missed most of the season with a broken ankle in which he missed 11 weeks suffering the injury back in Round 7 against North Melbourne.

Talia returns alongside Rory Atkins and Mitch McGovern to the side who had the weekend off for the bye, while out goes Riley Knight, Reilly O'Brien and Dean Gore who have all been referred back to SANFL duties.
50,000 is expected to turn up on Saturday night to cheer their home side on, with a win that could see the Crows back in the top 8 if other results go there way, while if the Tigers win, they could push for the top 5 at the end of the round.

Getting tight. 3 sides playing for the last spot just about. If only your percentage was a bit higher. Brisbane's % is pretty good for them.
