Magpies win an epic
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Magpie fans finally have something to
cheer about since the 2010 Grand Final

Collingwood has overcome a fierce Adelaide Crows side and a fast finishing Adelaide Crows outfit to run out eventual 5 point winners at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. In what was classed before the opening bounce as a battle that could shape the top 4, the clash certainly lived up to it's expectation and both sides really gave it their all. A hold on the top 2 would be beneficial for the Magpies if they were to win, whilst the Crows could have went inside the top 4 had they have won.

The heat was on early right from the opening bounce. The opening quarter was intense and had a real finals like intensity and feel to it. The Crows jumped the Magpies early and were able to gain the momentum heading into the quarter time break as they dominated the back half of that first quarter. 7 scoring shots to just 3 in the opening term but the Crows did miss a few get-table scoring shots. It was a high scoring 2nd quarter which saw the Magpies take the game back on their terms for a little while. The Crows were able to keep scoring despite the Magpies dominance though which shows the Crows are such an attacking side when the ball is inside their forward 50. Collingwood were able to kick back and score 6.2 to the Crows 5.2 for the quarter. The Crows held a slender lead heading into the main change.

Collingwood really stepped up their game in the third quarter and once again came out and out-scored the Crows on the scoreboard. Another 6.2 term saw the Magpies not only take the lead heading into the last change but also saw them open up a 12 point lead heading into the last quarter. The Crows managed just 3 goals in that 3rd quarter as the Pies leaders really started to stand up. Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar and Jamie Elliott were all prolific in the Magpies third quarter. It all came down to the last quarter. The Magpies had worked hard to get in front all afternoon and they weren't going to give up their lead without a fight. The Crows had always been around throughout the match as not much separated the two sides all afternoon. The Crows finished the game out the strongest, out-scoring the Magpies 6.2 to 5.1 in the last quarter but the Pies were able to hang on in a thrilling encounter.

For the winners, captain Scott Pendlebury played one hell of a game. The superstar midfielder clearly got the 3 Brownlow votes from the umpires with a 35 disposal game which included 6 tackles, 5 clearances, 8 inside 50's and a goal next to his name. Adam Treloar (29 disposals, 7 tackles), Brent Macaffer (29 disposals, 7 clearances) and Jordan De Goey (23 disposals) were all great for the home side.
Jeremy Howe was almost a lone hand up in the Magpies forward line with the ex-Demon kicking 5 goals in the Magpies win. Travis Cloke chipped in with 2 whilst the Pies had a host of single goal scorers.

For the Crows, it was a bad ending to such a great start to the match. Could be one that slipped away from them but would be pleased to have came to Melbourne and really challenged a top 4 side. Brad Crouch and Brodie Smith really stood out for the Crows midfielders with both having 29 disposals. Eddie Betts played one of his better games he's played in, in a while with the small forward playing a lot more up through the midfield, Betts finished with 24 disposals and 6 contested possessions. The Crows had a few more bigger targets up forward with Tom Lynch returning to his best with 5 goals, whilst Troy Menzel enjoyed being back on the MCG with the mercurial forward kicking 4.1 from his 16 disposals. Josh Jenkins continued his dominant season with another 3 goals but wasted a couple also kicking 3 behinds.

In what was a match that so much writing on the game it really lived up to it's expectation. But it was the Pies who walk away with the 4 points today and a firm grip on 2nd position on the AFL ladder, whilst the Crows can lick their wounds but should be proud of their efforts.

Medical Room
Collingwood:
Pies tagger Levi Greenwood copped a slight wrist sprain but should be right to take his place in the side next weekend.

Adelaide: Midfielder Matt Crouch has been battling osteitis pubis throughout the season and the club has ruled him out for the next month to get him right before finals.

Next Up
Collingwood go on to face the struggling Cats on Friday night footy whilst the Crows are back at home to take on the even more struggling Fremantle Dockers on Saturday night.

Summary
The Crows are back on their home deck this Saturday night and are taking on a Fremantle side that has been well down on confidence for the last 2 seasons. Plenty of veterans and older players and not a lot of youngsters coming through sees the Dockers down in 14th position on the AFL ladder coming up against a side that will want to win to cement themselves in the top 4. A loss here for the Crows could smell disaster for their finals hopes in 2017. The Crows came off a narrow loss against the Pies last weekend in Melbourne whilst the Dockers had a 7 point loss against North Melbourne at home last weekend.
It shall be an interesting battle through the midfield between the two sides with Nat Fyfe on one side and Rory Sloane on the other.

Crows smash Dockers but win comes at a cost
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Crows ruck Sam Jacobs
comes off the ground after
injuring his knee

Adelaide has tonight belted the Fremantle Dockers at the tune of 54 points in front of 47,700 at Adelaide Oval. The win is a massive win in regards to the Crows finals chances however the win was soured with the potential long term injury to Crows ruckman Sam Jacobs. Jacobs clunked at his knee in the opening minutes of the last quarter which sent scares through the Adelaide camp. He played a few more minutes before hobbling off the ground and took no further part in the contest. This could be a huge blow for the Crows heading into the later stages of the season and word coming out of the Crows camp is that Jacobs has injured his PCL which would see him miss a few months.

Back to the game and it was all Adelaide. A huge score and a massive win is something they certainly wanted to get their season back on track. After going down to the Pies last weekend the win against the Dockers puts the Crows back into contention with the top 4 and with a big win like this their percentage looks healthy. It all started right from the opening quarter as the Crows were ruthless with their attack on the ball. A huge 9 goal opening term set them up for the evening and never looked back from there. They finished the game off with 24.4.148 their highest score of the season. To highlight the Crows ruthlessness, Adelaide finished with 64 tackles compared to the Dockers 38 yet the Dockers finished with more inside 50's despite the big difference in scoreline.

For the loosing side Nick Suban was fantastic with 31 possessions and 9 inside 50's while Michael Barlow (29 disposals and 8 clearances) and Lachie Neale (27 disposals) were the Dockers best. Up front the Dockers relied on veteran Matthew Pavlich a lot more then they should be at the moment. Pavlich tried his best and finished with 3 goals from 7 disposals while Mundy, Walters, Ballantyne and Lachie Weller each finished with 2.

It was all the Crows though on what was a dominant night for the club. Rory Sloane was again solid with 27 disposals as did Jack Steven and Brodie Smith with 27 touches. Jarryd Lyons found some of his best form with 26 disposals, 7 clearances and 2.2 for the night but seemed to have been out done by his midfield mate in Rory Atkins who finished with 26 disposals and 3 goals.
It was a massive effort from the Crows and a very even contribution in the end which would please coach Sumner.
Josh Jenkins had a night out with a big bag of 8 goals which takes his season tally to 65 his personal best in any season in his career. As mentioned, Rory Atkins finished with 3 goals while they had a host of multiple goal kickers with Riley Knight, Seedsman, Lyons and Smith all finishing with 2.

But the big news for the night is surrounding star ruckman Sam Jacobs. Jacobs is set to miss the remainder of the season with the club determining that Jacobs may have injured his posterior crucial ligament. It's a big loss for the club as Jacobs has become a valuable member of the side over the last few seasons and he has done 90% of the ruckwork during that time. Even though it's a huge loss it also opens the door for guys like Reilly O'Brien who has been doing his trade in the SANFL and could even open the door for first year player Clayton Smart to have a few runs against some of the weaker oppositions.

Medical Room
Adelaide: The big one obviously is Sam Jacobs with his PCL injury

Fremantle: The Dockers came away from the match unscathed

Next up: Adelaide has the bye next weekend whereas the Dockers travel to Simmonds Stadium on Friday night to take on the Cats

Confirmed: Sam Jacobs to miss remainder of the season
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs worst fears have been confirmed today with the star big man injuring his PCL and will miss the remainder of the season through injury. It's a huge loss for the Crows as they're on their way to another finals campaign but without their star ruckman questions are being asked as to how far they'll go. Jacobs is probably the last player the Crows would want to loose for the season but it now gives some others senior opportunities. The likely replacement is Reilly O'Brien who has been Jacobs understudy for the past 2 seasons now. O'Brien has gotten a taste of AFL footy this season but will now get a long run in the 2nd half of the season.

The other obvious replacement is first year player in Clayton Smart. Smart has also had small doses of AFL footy in his first season but could get multiple games in the ruck if the Crows choose to go down this path.

Match Preview: Adelaide vs Sydney
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Summary
8th will come over to Adelaide to take on the Crows who are currently sitting in 5th position. Sydney will look to hang onto the top 8 with a win against the Crows whilst if Adelaide can get the win at home, they'll be one game closer to getting inside that top 4. A huge crowd is expected for this one with both sides missing some big names. Adelaide ruck Sam Jacobs injured his PCL last weekend and will miss the remainder of the season whilst Swans midfielder Josh Kennedy will also miss the remainder of the season. The Crows will also be without the two Crouch brothers with Brad injuring himself during the bye week and should miss only the 2 matches. Both these sides have played out classic encounters over the past and Friday night is expected to be no different.

Crows slip up at the chance of top 4
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE has wasted a great opportunity to take a step closer into their chance of making the top 4 with a 25 point loss against the Sydney Swans in Adelaide on Friday night. The Swans take the victory by 25 points which sees them gain on the top part of the AFL ladder. The Crows were always going to be more vulnerable with the absence of some of it's stars with the likes of Jacobs, Walker and 2 Crouch brothers missing from it's best 22. But the Swans took total control of the Crows injury situation with a stunning round 19 victory.
The win sees the Swans now on level wins with the Crows whereas the loss for the Crows sees them go from 5th position on the AFL ladder to 7th and on equal points with the side that's sitting in 9th position.

Sydney got the jump early on the Crows kicking 6.5 for the opening term. 11 scoring shots to the visitors whilst the home side only managed 5 scoring shots with a return of 2.3 sees them a long way back. The Swans never looked back from there as they always had answers to the Crows attack and never gave the Crows any inches. Adelaide would kick within 2 goals but the Swans were always able to counter them with a few of their own. It's a great win for the Swans and really keeps them in touch with the top 8 while the Crows had the chance to have their sights on top 4 but now find themselves fighting to keep in touch with the final 8.

For the winners it was such an even contribution throughout the entire field which resulted in the win. Tom Mitchell was a standout for the Swans though with the tough midfielder racking up 34 disposals, 6 clearances, 11 inside 50's and kicking a goal. Dan Hennebery and Luke Parker did as they pleased through the midfield but it was the Swans youngsters who really stood up. Dean Towers had a great game on the wing. Towers accumulated 31 disposals and 9 inside 50's as his run and carry was a highlight of the night. Bailey Dale was the other solid contributor on the night with the ex-Bulldog racking up 26 possessions and had an important 8 clearances.
Lance "Buddy" Franklin found plenty of the ball also and really loves playing against the Crows when he gets the opportunity. Franklin finished with 24 disposals and 3 goals but could have had a really big night but managed to miss 3 shots on goal as well.

With the absence of Sam Jacobs in the ruck for the Crows the Swans were able to dominate in that department throughout the night. Kurt Tippett had a monster evening, not in terms of disposals but kicked 4.2 and had 31 hitouts whilst his partner Callum Sinclair had 15 disposals and 14 hitouts. The Crows chose Reilly O'Brien in the clash against the Swans and he held his own for such a young player. 20 disposals, 18 hitouts and 3 tackles is a solid night out for any player but he was convincingly beaten on the night.
Up forward the Swans had plenty of options. Tom Derickx kicked 4.2 from his 6 disposals and as mentioned Tippett finished with 4 while Franklin finished with 3.

Adelaide on the other hand played well but just weren't polished enough to get the 4 points. They certainly missed their big man in the center throughout the evening. Jack Steven was the pick of the Crows bunch with 29 disposals but it was the work from Daniel Talia who had the home side talking. 21 disposals and 13 spoils saw Talia hit his 2014 All-Australian form up against Franklin and Tippett for the majority. Scott Thompson was back to his best with 21 disposals but the Crows were soured when Brodie Smith came off the ground with concussion. Injuries are coming at the wrong time for the Crows and this could spell disaster for their finals campaign.

Up forward, Josh Jenkins was a lone hand once again with the star forward picking up 20 disposals, 10 hitouts and 4.2 next to his name while Mitch McGovern chipped in with 2 goals.

Medical Room
Adelaide:
Brodie Smith suffered a concussion after clashing heads with Tom Mitchell, should be fine for next week

Sydney: The Swans had no injury concerns on the night

Up next: The Crows after their loss have got the big showdown coming up on Saturday afternoon whilst the Swans are back on Friday night footy taking on the Cats

Who ever played on him should get a pretty hard reality check letting him do that.

Good to see O'Brien able to show some good touch. Could turn into something.

Another man down
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

29z4ww4.jpg

Adelaide youngster Wayne Milera has been cited by the MRP for his headbutt against the Sydney Swans on the weekend and will miss 2 matches. The 2nd year Crows has been playing in defence recently to further his learning of the game but a drop in concentration and his frustration at the push and shove saw him headbutt James Rose during the third quarter. The incident sparked a small melee between the two sides and Milera will miss the following matches against the Power and the week after. It's another blow to the Crows who are already missing a heap of first choice players with the likes of Jacobs, Walker, Smith and the Crouch brothers all on the injury list so coach Hayden Sumner will need to look to his SANFL guys to pick up the slack.

In line for a recall with Milera missing is Mitch Grigg who had 28 disposals and 2 goals on the weekend while 2nd round draft selection Drew Ferry could always be in the recall line.

Match Preview: Port Adelaide vs Adelaide
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Summary

You don't have to tell the people of South Australia how important this match will be. The showdown is one of the greatest rivalries in the AFL to date and obviously the biggest rivalry in South Australia. But take the bragging rights out of it, this match is huge in the context of the season. Port Adelaide are sitting 6th on the AFL ladder with a 11-7 record while their arch rivals Adelaide are sitting in 7th with a record of 10-7 as the Power have played one more game then the Crows. The winner here could be looking at a top 4 finish, while the looser could be outside of the top 8 by the end of the round.

So not only will we have the spice of a showdown but we also have the added pressure of a finals spot up for grabs for the winner. Port Adelaide will come into the match without midfielder stars Robbie Gray and captain Travis Boak while the Crows injuries are well documented over the last fortnight and will be without some of their stars as well. Taylor Walker could be a big omission for the Crows but will need to pass a fitness test later in the week.

Where and when: Adelaide Oval - Saturday 1:30pm

Key Matchups
Chad Wingard vs Luke Brown
- The Chad is arguably Port Adelaide's most valuable player. His dangerous around goal, great when the balls on the deck and can take a big grab or two throughout the game. He can roll through the midfield but if the Power were to win, he'd want to be 80% in the forward line. Luke Brown is the Crows best lock down small defender. He'll get Wingard and has done the job on him before. Will need to hold the mercurial forward to one goal or less for the Crows to win.

Rory Sloane vs Ollie Wines - 2 absolute bulls of the game will go head to head on the weekend. Without Gray and Boak, Wines has a big job carrying this Power midfield while Sloane has become the Crows on-field leader. Both courageous as they come and we know they'll both put their heads over the ball.

Jasper Pittard vs Eddie Betts - We all know Betts isn't the player he once used to be. Age is starting to catch up with the forward but what we do know is that he can still turn a few games on when he wants too. You feel like with the Showdown and the occasion Eddie will rise to it. Pittard will need to do a good lock down job to keep Betts from impacting this one.

Reilly O'Brien vs Matthew Lobbe - Getting your hands on the ball from the centre is crucial in modern day football. These two rucks aren't big house names but you can guarantee they'll both give it their all in order for their side to get out on top. Look for O'Brien to back up what was a solid outing last weekend against the more harder opponent in Kurt Tippett.

really, Walker obviously passed his fitness test to play the Power!
had it been any other team, he would have had the extra week rest..........

Yep you're right. He was available for selection and if we weren't play the Power and a side who we're fighting a top 8 position for, I would have had him come back via the SANFL

Comeback Captain the difference
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE'S returning Captain in Taylor Walker turned out to be the difference between the two sides on Saturday afternoon. After a lengthy lay off through injury, Walker returned to the Crows line-up to take on the Power in the Showdown and it seemed like the skipper hadn't missed a beat as he finished with night off with 4 goals next to his name and more importantly the Showdown cup.
The Crows responded after their loss last week and have again given themselves every opportunity to finish inside the top 8 with the victory this afternoon. It gives them a little bit of breathing space between them and the Power and with just 4 rounds remaining could be a big result come September.

It was a miserable old day down at Adelaide Oval. Plenty of rain throughout the morning but did ease during the match. It made the spectacle even more of a slog fest throughout. The Crows didn't allow the rain to stop them though, bursting out of the blocks with a quick 4 goal flourish before the Power even scored. The Crows were relentless in their attack on the ball and the Power had no answers for the first 15 minutes. The Crows went on to score their biggest 1st quarter score of the season with 8.2 for the term leading the Power 3.2
It was all really Adelaide from there as the Power were gallant, but were so far behind in the opening quarter that even the slightest chance of a comeback was washed away pretty quickly by Adelaide.

Getting into some player standouts now, for the Power Jared Polec had more midfield minutes with the likes of Boak and Gray missing for the Power. He held his own through the centre picking up 33 disposals and a goal while his mate on the other wing Matt White was very good again with 32 disposals and 8 tackles. Some good signs from some of the younger Power boys with Sam Colquhoun finishing with 29 disposals and 6 tackles while Jimmy Toumpas is starting to find his feet at Alberton and had 28 possessions. Up forward the Power really didn't look like scoring through their big men however obviously when the ball is in Wingard's possession you can more then likely count it down as a score. He did well and finished with 3 goals from just the 6 possessions but was really the only shining light for the Power with Westhoff and Lobbe pitching in with 2 goals. Very disappointing for Power fans as they invested so heavily in Charlie Dixon but he had a bad day in front of the sticks kicking 1.3 from 16 disposals.

For the winners, it goes without saying that no one really starred today. Even though Tex kicked 4 goals but it just again seemed like a really even contribution from the club which would get the coach very happy. Jack Steven was the pick of the best with 35 disposals, 7 clearances and 6 inside 50's while his work horse mate Rory Sloane had 34 and 6 tackles. Jarryd Lyons and Rory Atkins were both solid through the midfield in the absence of the 2 Crouch brothers and Brodie Smith. Walker as mentioned with 4 goals up forward as Cameron and Jenkins slotted in with 2.

It's a fanatic win for the Crows today considering the talent they have out of the team at the moment. A 22 point victory without Jacobs, Smith and the 2 Crouch brothers is always something you'd take at the beginning of the match. Adelaide's coaching group must feel relieved they can count on their mid range players to come into the side when called apon and get them to deliver on the big stage. Guys like Lyons, Grigg and Ellis-Yolmen have been able to step up in certain games throughout the year and fill the void left by the injured players. Headaches for the selection committee to what happens to these mid range players when the stars are injury free and ready to go. Only time will tell.

Rising Star Nomination - Tom Doedee
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Adelaide defender Tom Doedee in this weeks Rising Star nomination. The 20 year old came back from a long lay off through injury against the Power on Saturday afternoon and fitted straight back into things. Doedee has just played 11 games for the Crows and cemented himself as a regular before the injury struck. Back injury free he'll look to close out the season and hopefully gain the form he had leading into the break he had. In his first match back Doedee picked up 19 disposals but it was his off the ball stuff that really led to his nomination. 9 tackles along with 10 rebound 50's earns him the Rising Star nomination for Round 20.

Match Preview: Adelaide vs Melbourne
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Summary
Another huge game in terms of the finishing inside the top 8. Both sides are currently inside but with a loss to either side could see them miss out on the finals all together. The Crows have another chance to get inside the top 4 with a win here against the Demons as they're sitting in 5th position on the ladder while the Demons needs to win to keep themselves inside the top 8. A loss here to the Demons could see them outside the top 8 by the end of the Round.

The Crows could welcome back a host of stars for this match. Brodie Smith and Matt and Brad Crouch all could return to the side however after last weeks performance, it might be hard to shuffle a few changes around. The Demons will only be missing Aaron Vandenberg from their best 22 so the Crows selection could determine this result. Can they afford to bring in the underdone Smith and Crouches? Or should they stick with Ellis-Yolmen and Grigg who were all very good against the Power last weekend.
