Match Preview: Brisbane vs Adelaide

Summary
Brisbane and Adelaide face off in the 2nd Elimination Final up at the Gabba with both sides looking to improve on their 2016 finish. It's the first time the Lions have made the finals since 2009. Adelaide were in the same position this time last season under coach Scott Camporeale who was interim coach after the sudden death of then senior coach Phil Walsh. The Crows defeated the Bulldogs in arguably one of the best finals for a long time but then went on to get smacked by the Hawks by 75 points in the semi final a week later.

Both sides have come in unchanged from their line-ups in round 24 and both sides seem to be at full strength heading into the final. The winner will go on to survive another week, whereas the looser won't be back next weekend as they'll be knocked out of the competition and left looking back at what could have been.
The Lions finished the season in 6th position on the AFL ladder whilst the Crows finished 7th on the ladder to setup what could be a fantastic Elimination Final.
Both sides will head into the contest full of steam with the Crows having their skipper Taylor Walker become the first man since Buddy Franklin to kick 100 goals in a season last weekend while the Lions will leave it up to their small forwards and midfield which they've done throughout the season to kick their winning score.

The six points

1. Inexperience might tell a story - It'll be the first time the Lions have reached the finals since season 2009. 7 years of finishing on the bottom of the ladder to reach today, can the inexperience be a telling factor against a Crows outfit who played in a finals campaign 12 months ago.

2. Adelaide has the key forwards to really tear this game apart. Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins, Mitch McGovern and Tom Lynch are all capable of kicking bags of goals and the young Brisbane defense will have to be on high alert going up against this Crows forward line.

3. Tom Rockcliff vs Rory Sloane - Both these guys have finished in the top 10 for possessions in the AFL this season, they'll go head to head in what promises to be a battle within a battle.

4. The last time these two met, Taylor Walker kicked 7 and Josh Jenkins finished with 3 goals. Rory Sloane finished with 35 possessions while Matt Crouch had 28 disposals.

5. Adelaide and Brisbane have faced off twice in finals before this contest with the Lions winning both matches. Adelaide has a 0% strike rate against the Lions in finals

6. In the regular season, the Crows and Lions have faced off 31 times with the Lions just in front with 16 wins compared to the Crows 15.

Match Report: Lions dream season continues as they knock off Crows to advance to Semi Final

The Brisbane Lions stunning 2016 season has continued tonight after their first finals win since 2009 against the Adelaide Crows winning 15.8. 98 to 13.12. 90 in front of 41,370 at the Gabba.
It's a great result for Queensland football with the Lions now onto the second week of finals through to a Semi Final and will determine their opponents over the weekend. It was a classy win from the young Lions who last season finished 16th on the AFL ladder to finish last to now into a Semi Final the following year. Justin Leppitsch has got the Lions playing some wonderful football which is on heart and instinct.
The Crows on the other hand were left wondering what could have been as they managed more scoring shots then the Lions on the night but managed to go down by 8 points at the end of the evening.

The Lions might be fielded such a young side and not having been in a finals campaign since 2009 a lot of these Lions wouldn't have played in a final before. They weren't fazed by the occasion as they went on in the first quarter to keep the Crows to a single goal in the opening term. The Lions kicked away to a 25 point lead heading into half time having one eye on the Semi Final as the Crows as one of the highest scoring sides in the competition only managed to kick 4.4 for the opening half.

The Crows got back into the contest in the third quarter heavily scoring throughout the term kicking 6.4 for the term to the Lions 3.2 to get the scores within 5 points heading into the last term but the Lions kept their cool in the last quarter with a rampant Adelaide outfit peppering the goals to hold on and win their first final since 2009.

As the season has gone for the Lions they have relied on their small forwards and midfielders to kick them a winning score each week as they still haven't developed much key position prospect but if they keep winning without one, then that's all that matters for the time being. Midfielders, Daniel Rich and Sam Mayes both snuck forward and finished with 2 goals while ruckman Stefan Martin and youngster Marco Paparone both finished with 2 goals as well. They had an even spread of single goal scorers throughout the contest which got them the win in the end.
Adelaide was well supported by captain Taylor Walker who finished with 5.3 from 22 disposals as he tried hard to get his side over the line. Tom Lynch bobbed up with 3 goals after a few quiet weeks from him while Scott Thompson who many have argued has played his last game went forward and kicked 2 goals. The Crows only managed another 3 single goal kickers with Atkins, Laird and Brad Crouch all kicking goals but wasn't enough in the end to get the result.

Dayne Beams played a big match for the Lions as Beams let the AFL world know he was still in business with a 35 possession game with 7 marks, 6 tackles, 9 inside 50's and a goal next to his name after being named best on ground from commentators. Dayne Zorko (34 disposals, 10 tackles) and Ryan Bastinac (27 possessions, 7 tackles) were all big through the midfield for the Lions.
Adelaide's Rory Sloane was best on ground for the Crows behind the big Texan with (33 disposals and 9 inside 50's) Richard Douglas his back into some form after spending some time up forward of late picking up 30 disposals and 5 clearances while Matt Crouch was solid again with 27 disposals and 7 inside 50's.

The Lions captain Tom Rockcliff was the only sour part of the night for the Lions with the skipper breaking his ribs in a marking contest backing back into a pack when Josh Jenkins big body and knee hit the side ribs of Rockcliff. He was carried off the ground and taken to a local hospital and word has come back with broken ribs which will most likely see him miss a few weeks at best.

The Lions season continues but the Crows season is over and with first year coach Hayden Sumner it'll be a long summer working on what went wrong in the Elimination final match and to keep working and getting better during the off-season.
We caught up with Crows coach after the match.
"Disappointed obviously, we had our chances to win the game but we weren't able to take our chances when they arose. Credit to the Lions though, they wanted the ball more then us at certain stages of the contest and that ended up being the critical part of the match. We needed to play 4 quarters to win the game but weren't able to do that. Early in the match they seemed to have the better then us and kept us from scoring. Their defense was really solid and we couldn't find a way to get around their defensive wall.
I thought our guys played a lot better football in the second half but by that time really we were coming from a long way behind (not in terms of score, but in terms of ball winning ability).
It's a disappointing way to finish the season as we feel we had more to offer the competition, but we'll let the guys rest up and have a look at the game early next week. It'll hurt for a while but really it could be a good thing in disguise as the lads were on the winning end of one of these last season against the Bulldogs at the MCG but 12 months later are now on the loosing end".

2016 AFL Retirements


Saints champ calls it a day

St.Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt has today announced his retirement from AFL football announcing to the community his intentions to retire. Riewoldt who began his career in 2001 played 320 games for the Saints over that time and kicked 700 goals where he sits in 22nd position on the all time goal kicking lists in the history of the game. Riewoldt has been the Saints captain since 2007 and the former number 1 draft selection gave everything he had left in the game. Riewoldt was involved in the Saints Pre-season cup wins in 2004 and 2008 and his individual awards speak for themselves.

2016 AFL Trade Period


Adelaide weren't in much of a place to trade away many players as the coaching staff and recruiting staff knew they were already in the premiership window. Obviously they'd consider options if something presented itself to them however weren't going to go out of their way to produce a trade if it wasn't necessary.

Adelaide only managed to do the one trade over the whole trade period and it sees a favorite son heading out the door. St.Kilda came to us with an offer that we had to think really long and hard for. St.Kilda have had some salary cap trouble this season and had to offload a few big names from the club. They came to the club and mentioned they had Jack Steven up on the table and to see if we wanted to do a deal. Jack Steven us a quality outside midfielder from the Saints and at 26 years old would be a nice fit in the Crows midfield. With the departure of Patrick Dangerfield and most likely Scott Thompson within the next 12 months the Crows would welcome a solid A grade midfielder in that age bracket to slot right next to Rory Sloane. The 2 Crouch brothers are still young while Lyons is young himself.
Problem was, who was going to make way for Steven?
It's very similar to the Bernie Vince trade the Crows done when they selected Matt Crouch in the national draft. The Crows really didn't want to get rid of Bernie, but made the decision to make the club a stronger club in their position to win a flag. This is the same result with the Crows offering up Richard Douglas in the trade to secure Steven.

Douglas who has played 189 games for the Crows and kicked 125 goals now finds himself a Saint with the 29 year old bringing a lot of experience to the Saints young list.
We caught up with Crows coach Hayden Sumner earlier about the trade.

"I feel like it's a win win for both clubs. We've secured a A grade midfielder who is at the peak of his powers. At 26, Steven is looking to take the competition by storm and we guaranteed him a regular midfield position depending on form. Douglas was a tricky one to let go. His 2016 was down on his regular seasons and we thought with his age it was the right time to part ways with Richard. He has been an outstanding footballer for this club over a number of years and we wish him all the best at the Saints in 2017 and beyond until he retires.

The Adelaide Football would like to thank and wish the best of luck to each player who has been de-listed today. In particular Nathan VanBerlo and Ricky Henderson who have both been with the club for a long period of time. VanBerlo was who captain of the club from the time Simon Goodwin retired until the start of 2015 when Taylor Walker became captain departs the club today and could very well get picked up by another side looking to bolster their midfield depth. Henderson has had a bad run with injuries in the last few seasons and fell out of favor at the Crows with the likes of Doedee, Lever and Hartigan going ahead of him as key defenders.

Luke Lowden came from the Hawks but didn't play a senior game for the Crows and with the emergence of Reilly O'Brien, Lowden's time was up. Keenan Ramsey, Jonathon Beech, Paul Hunter and Alex Keath were all rookies with the club and we hope they get a second chance at AFL football somewhere.

2016 National Draft


Pick 11 – Clayton Smart - 199cm, 98kg - Ruckman

Clayton is the son of former Crows champion Nigel Smart. The talented ruckman has come through the junior system of the SANFL and last season was playing against men in the SANFL so he will be ready to tackle the big bodies of the AFL. Smart is an athletic ruckman standing at 199cm and 98kg who can also be thrown down in defence if needed to help out his defenders. Not exactly big enough in the sense of big ruckman, but has a wonderful leap which will see him compete in the air. Smart was taken at pick 11 by the Crows in the father/son bidding system and will look to develop under Sam Jacobs and Reilly O’Brien. Probably won’t get much game time but will develop into a long term prospect for the Crows.

“Crows coach Hayden Sumner had this to say about the recruitment of Smart – Yeah look he certainly is a talent. We’ve been watching Clayton for a while now and obviously were excited when the father/son time came and we were able to call out his name at number 11. Sydney put a bid in for him with selection 14 so we had to move and take him at 11. He’s probably not the tallest ruckman available at the draft but he’s clever at reading the play and uses his body really well in a marking contest. His body strength is something we’ll look to utilise going forward in which he can use to dominate the ruck contest around the ground also”.


Pick 29 – Drew Ferry – Midfield – 181cm, 87kg

Drew is among the top midfielder talent in this draft. Surprised he slipped to 29 for the Crows to pick him up. He’s a powerfully built inside midfielder. His endurance and fitness base is good enough however at the level of AFL will need to build that up over time if he wants to play the full 120 minutes through the midfield. Adelaide needed another big bodied midfielder with Scott Thompson going around again in 2017 but this man could be the perfect replacement.

Pick 11 – Brett Griffin – Midfielder – 185cm, 93kg
Brett Griffin is a talented prospect who won’t win many single awards but should develop into a team first regular. Not blistered with speed or skill but the midfielder has plenty of determination. He is a powerfully built inside midfielder. Griffin has a good enough fitness base to run out games and has good intensity around the contests often winning contested possession. He is rather slow across the ground as mentioned and can let himself down with poor disposal by foot.

Pick 28 – Jacob Bonham – Small Forward – 188cm, 80kg
Bonham is a good all round player without many visible weakness’ in his game. He is a livewire small forward who will quickly become a crowd favourite. Bonham has elite agility and is a reasonable accurate shot for goal. He possesses exceptional breakaway speed but can let himself down by not making the right option for the side.

Pick 45 – Garrett Wogel – Tall Defender – 193cm, 95kg
Wogel is one player who different recruiters will rate very differently. He is a tall defender who at the moment does lack body strength but makes up for it with his elite defensive skills. Wogel is good at spoiling his opponent in a one on one contest and is very good at spoiling opponents on the lead.

Pick 62 – Alan Grisedale – Midfielder – 182cm, 85kg
Grisedale is a pretty tidy footballer with no glaring weaknesses. He is a powerfully built inside midfielder. Grisedale has an elite motor already and will wear down opponents and has good intensity around the contest often winning the contested possession. His endurance is great however does lack in the speed department.

Our defense is still rather young in terms of games played. Guys like Brown, Lever, Hartigan and Laird have all played a handful of games while Daniel Talia is our most experienced. Might have to give Clayton Smart a run in defense at times throughout the year also with Jacobs and O'Brien ahead of him in the ruck department.

Funny it's not too far from the real AFL. Adelaide's attack is one of the best in the league whilst our defense constantly give up 100+ a game. Lucky our forwards can kick a big enough score to win most matches

Round 1 of the 2017 season approaches this weekend with the Adelaide Crows facing off against the 4 time reigning premiers in Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon. Adelaide made an elimination final in 2016 while the Hawks went on to make history defeating the Tigers in the Grand Final to win their 4th Grand Final on the trot. Not a whole lot has changed for both these sides over the Pre-season in terms of personnel at the club as both clubs believe they're still in the premiership window. It's a huge task for the Crows in Round 1 against the reigning premiers but all the hard over the summer can come out on display against the best of the best.

Both sides were great during the NAB Challenge with the Crows naming a lot of youngsters in their opening round against the Cats but gradually introduced their senior players as the weeks went along. Tom Doedee was a standout for the Crows during the NAB Challenge matches with the young defender now in his second season ready to tackle the big stage and cement his place in the Crows senior side.

Hawks keep winning streak against Crows alive

Hawthorn has once again defeated the Crows in a scoreline that saw the Hawks kick 18.9.117 to 15.9.99. The Hawks have defeated the Crows in the last 6 outings with the Crows last win against the Hawks dating back to 2011 when the Crows hosted the Hawks in Round 1 at Aami Stadium and won 105-85. 2011 was a long time ago and the Hawks have had the wood on the Crows since then winning their last 8 games against the side.

The reigning premiers once again showed early on in Round 1 that they're the side to beat in 2017 with a convincing win over the Crows winning by 18 points in front of a huge Adelaide crowd of 52,735. The Crows on the other hand have always gotten close with the Hawks when they place at home, with this time around no different as they head back to the drawing board after starting the year off with a loss at home.
Hawthorn were more polished around the ground and wanted the ball when it mattered most, while the Crows took the most of their opportunities against the Hawks but fell short at the last hurdle.

"I'm not too sure what it is about the Hawks but they're a great football club and every time we come up against them, they always find a way to win the close ones and that's a sign of a good side", Crows coach Hayden Sumner said after the match.
"We were thrown at the first quarter, they were ruthless in their approach and attack on the football which led to us playing catch up football for most of the evening", after the Crows gave away the first 6 goals of the match to the Hawks in the opening quarter while the Crows were goalless. "We didn't adapt to the pressure they put on us early and we struggled to get back into the contest until we rest in the second quarter".

Adelaide did steady and bring the game back to a respectable margin at the half time break after finding their way back into the game by getting their hands on the ball first and playing some quick football to get themselves back into the game. But the fast start for the Hawks was too much to give the Crows much of a chance as they had to play catch up from the beginning.


The match itself was a standout to begin the year with both sides going in hard and you'd expect a contest like we saw tonight as a finals contest. Credit goes to both sides for an entertaining battle which most of the footy world would be happy with. Jack Gunston was the best for the Hawks up forward with 3 goals while Jonathon Ceglar, Jarryd Roughead, Sam Mitchell and Luke Breust all finished with 2 goals. After dominating over the past 3-4 seasons, Sam Mitchell was well held by Crows defender Luke Brown and only managed the 8 disposals but found himself forward at times and managed to hurt Brown on the scoreboard. It shows the versatility of the Hawks when guys like Mitchell can play forward instead of getting 35+ touches through the midfield.
It was more their youngsters or B grade players who really stood up today against the Crows. Luke Breust played a lot in the midfield and finished with 31 touches along with his 2 goals. Brad Hill was solid again with 29 disposals and 6 clearances while Billy Hartung played more through the middle picking up 27 disposals himself along with 7 inside 50's. Josh Gibson was big in defence for the Hawks with a team high 10 spoils along with 20 disposals and 8 rebound 50's.

For the Crows Eddie Betts started the year off well with 3 goals next to his name after having a disappointing 2016 season. Betts has a hoodoo against the Hawks just like the Crows but kicked back well this contest with 3 goals. Josh Jenkins, Taylor Walker and first gamer Tom Doedee finished with 2 goals for the home side.
Rory Sloane after winning the Crows best and fairest in 2016 was a standout again through the midfield with 29 disposals and 9 inside 50's while Matt Crouch had 27 disposals himself. Ex-Saint turn Crow Jack Steven was good for his new side without shining, picking up 22 disposals while big Sam Jacobs battled manfully against the duo of Ceglar and McEvoy to win the points in the ruck picking up 21 disposals, 9 marks and 33 hitouts to be one of the best for the Crows.

Adelaide coach Hayden Sumner was impressed by his side to get back into the contest after a slow start against the reigning premiers.
"Shocking start really against the reigning premiers. You can't get off to a start like we did tonight against a side like Hawthorn and expect to get back into the game to a point where you are in the match. They're too good off a side to give a 6 goal start and we had to play catch up right from the word go. Our boys prepared well for the contest, round 1 is always an exciting time as a football club but the Hawks really sprung out of the blocks to get the jump on us.
In saying that though, I was impressed by the boys to get back into the contest in that second quarter. We reshuffled a few things and went back to basics at quarter time and the players started to get their hands on the ball first and won the contested ball. We were able to get the margin back to a respectable scoreline heading into half time but the Hawks were too good and only needed to kick a goal or two to get that breathing space again as we spent a lot of tickets having to catch up.

I thought some of our younger players really played well today. Luke Brown kept Mitchell to below 10 disposals, Brown was excellent for us as we targeted Mitchell to be a player who has hurt us a lot in the past. Credit to Brown who did the job we asked him to do before the contest. Very impressed with guys like Matt Crouch, Jarryd Lyons and even Wayne Milera who I think had 20 disposals and 5 tackles. Exciting times for the club and we'll learn from the first quarter against the Hawks to get the side up and running right from the first bounce".
