If you don't like Duncan's kicking I'd hate to think what your thoughts are on Cockatoos disposal.

I like Duncan's kicking, where have I said I didn't? What I don't like is when he is either lazy or too cute with it. Is it really that hard to understand?

Really? Best in the whole competition?

He is a good kick, kicking like a millionaire doesn't mean that he isn't.

I've been consistent on this for a few years. He can be lazy and try and be too cute with his kicking. Get's chopped off or smothered a lot.

Mackie used to do exactly the same.
Well that's probably an inaccurate perception you have there. His kicks can't be chopped off or smothered too much, given his kicking efficiency is the best in the AFL.

Yep, for a small sample of this season that was posted about 8 rounds ago.

If people don't want to recognise that he's turned the ball over or made things more difficult than they ought be, either at crucial times in games or in dangerous positions on the ground through being lazy or too cute then I can't help that.

Actually, I might be being a bit harsh. The things that shits me to tears with his kicking is when he's in the clear, under no pressure and a target is in the clear under no pressure and he kicks it to them, only for an opponent somewhere in between the two to be able to get a hand onto it. It puts the side on the back foot and we have to scramble to regain possession.

He's a fine player, with all the ability in the world and when he's on, he's a gun. It's just that little thing that he does that irks me.

One thing I didn't like early in his career that wasn't his fault was when Bomber dropped both he and Menzel in '10 to bring back underdone favourite sons.

Since he was hit by mummy he has not been the same

And that is why we have coaches, and assistant coaches and skills coaches and goodness knows what else to help the players recover and learn and get better. Perhaps we don't have those coaches, perhaps all of our money is going into the stands instead of coaches.

Duncan's kicking efficiency was better earlier in the year, but even then he wasn't as damaging as I'd like. Recently, whether it's making the wrong decision or just executing poorly, he's a 50-50 proposition at the moment in using the ball well by foot. I think he's recognising this and is low on confidence, making him a key participant in handball chains that put us under pressure rather than break open the play. It's a shame because I'm a big Duncan fan and want him to do really well as he was early last year, but for whatever reason, he's been at par or just below for most of this season.

Only two clangers in 24 possessions today. If I had to pick an issue with him it wouldn't be cleanness with the ball.

I didn't think he was bad today, but how much did he hurt the opposition with his disposal? He was in the habit of dishing it off by hand and making it somebody else's problem. One of the worst parts of today's game were the handball chains (usually sending it to people under pressure) and sideways chip kicks, or ignoring the best option by foot. I thought Duncan was guilty of both. Often this year his stats have read better than actually watching his performances. Safety first possessions rather than breaking the lines and doing serious damage. Disposal efficiency doesn't tell the full story anyway, like in the third quarter when Duncan miskicked it to a guy running inside 50 but the ball landed in Hawkins mitts by chance. Handballing to someone under pressure who then gets tackled is classified as an effective possession, as is kicking sideways when there's a better option on further down the field.

It's true Duncan's form has been a bit down over the season. This might be an issue of having to adapt his role with changes to our mid-field division, or perhaps he is down on confidence. If it's the latter, then that would be playing a role in any drop off in disposal efficiency. Whatever the reason, he isn't playing his best football atm. But like you say, he's best is top shelf. Too good a player not to turn the corner soon.

Funny you should say that because the kid actually scored best in his draft year for kicking at the combine. If im not wrong he holds the record or at least matched it as well.

The thing a lot of Cockys haters forget is how young he is, just because hes a first round pick doesnt mean we should place unrealistic expectations on him. Hes young, he'll make mistakes, he'll learn from them and develop. We've barely seen him run in the midfield this season as hes being used as a negative pressure forward. All the word coming from the club and the boys suggest this kid is going to be one of our midfield staples. Cant wait to see him take a game by the balls in years to come.

I don't hate him at all. I really like him. I think he needs to be dropped to work on his kicking. It was as bad as I've seen yesterday.

Think he has been good last couple of weeks. He has hoped for a free a couple of times instead of going full tilt after the ball, but perhaps the injury would explain that attitude.

You fix the skills at training , you don't drop him for that - especially when he's starting to find the ball and the scoreboard
He's raw but he could and should become a prodigious talent , inspired pick by Wells :thumbsu:

Technically correct.

He was averaging a fraction under 20 touches a game before getting collected in that tackle by Mumford. He's been averaging 25 possessions a game since. Also averaging more tackles this year than ever before as well. Wish every player was as down as he apparently is.

Partridge, stop using facts to disprove bald assertions.

Outside the Adelaide game in which nothing seemed to go right for him, he hasn't played a bad game.
I also can't remember a game this year in which he's been clearly in our top 3 either though.

He's been a solid 5-10 ranked player in almost every game this year.

I think we were just all hoping his outstanding few games from 2015 would become the norm for him. It still might, in the meantime, consistently good games work for me.

Much the same as Guthrie being putrid and poor despite having his best season statistically.

Maybe people need to lower their expectations and stop assuming every member of the side can produce Dangerfield level numbers week in week out.

Just watched the replay and apart from one shot at goal that you'd normally expect him to nail (wasn't a gimme though) his kicking seemed fine, and as for looking for the handball at every opportunity I though he used the pill by hand whenever it was the best option.

Rather strange thread actually.

So the coaching staff are playing a bunch of easy beats and will be playing finals, possibly even get a double chance but they are risking the health of one of their best outside runners for the sake of it?
No thanks.

Duncan is just an also-ran and nothing more. He was touted as being the next big thing at the Cattery as late as last year but we are witnessing what he truly is and unfortunately, it's the same people who look for excuses to explain his somewhat unconvincing career trajectory.

Wouldn't mind a few more "also rans" like him, suspect if he was wearing different colours you'd view him more favorably though.
