As I sat at the Sturt V Centrals G.F. I pondered on what once would have been at Football Park between these two clubs in a Pre AFL era, or a non AFL era..

The former VFL club followers of Our National comp have lost their football league to a corporate National world...and we have a stake in that now as well...

It is no longer their league as much as they want to tell us we joined them we didnt..we irrevocablly changed the VFL so it could never be what it was Ever again......They tell us its the same ...phffft !

We still have our SANFL...as much as its been shattered by the Victorians as much as they have ruined 130 years of league football history, as much as they have striven to control all aspects of Football in Australia...

35, 000 fans turned up to LOCAL FOOTY ..The Vics cant draw that to their league..we can all go to National football and view it..but their former VFL is dead and a National league with teams from all over Australia now play in the G.F and that in itself is satisfaction in knowing we killed the local nature of their football.......

And we still have ours !!!

Disagree with ya there PA, I'd rather my Roosters be 7th in the AFL drawing 10,000 to a game than 7th in the SANFL drawing 2,000 to a game.

The AFL is just an extended VFL competition althought some people get fooled into thinking a change of name is a change of competition.

Sorry..I stand by my statement Wedgie...The Roosters are Still in a decimated SANFL...
but it aint the VFL anymore, no games at Glenferrie, Moorabin, Victoria Park, Waverley( VFL Park ) Brunswick Street, etc etc..the National league plays at Brisbane, Perth, AAMI stadium Sydney and MCG..As much as I'd like to see North playing National league Football...and I would..North is still a club..The former Victorian FL sector of the national league have lost their clubs to some sort of Professional, plastic, corporate franchises that wear their old teams colours..the smell, the feel, the basic club nature...is gone.... except for Port Adelaide...of course;)

I cry every time I watch teams like North and South run round..I grind my teeth at the harm the VFL did to WA and SA..if I accept a National league..that HATE is dissipated somewhat..If I recognise the VFL..the hatred burns..not in this pussy footed I dont like you way...but in a fundamentalist deepseated pathological Hate towards those filthy dog barstards..They think because they lost Fitzroy its the end of the football world.....We had league Football stolen from us and turned into "Local Footy"
Giant Clubs like Norwood and North and Sturt and their histories are left to be laughed at by former VFL clubs and their inane patronising supporters, with no sense of factual History only the contrived spewtum they lap up served by their own clubs and National league retrospective inclusion of Victorian suburban football records...Based on the same league an extension of the VFL ..yes..But at every other leagues expense.

You are right that victorians did lose their VFL to the national competition. The worst aspect of this is that supporters of a handful of clubs are now enduring the will they...won't they twilight world of possible relocations, mergers or death. Remember also South Melbourne or Fitzroy have not been allowed a team in the state competition. were another team to be wholly relocated I;m sure they might not be allowed one either.

But Don't accuse the Vics of 'damaging' your local competition. I'm sure the SANFL and Port Adelaide were just as 'guilty'.

You see Pess, Fitzroy could have fielded a team in the VFA where they began, so Could have South Melbourne..as totally autonimous clubs from the AFL..Naturally FitzroyAs F.F.C. ltd and South Melbourne..as a suburban VFA club...However..

In their lustful desire to control all aspects of Football in Victoria..the AFL have coerced the VFA into changing its heritage...Why for gods sake ?..........................................

It disallows any alternative in Victoria..it stops any effective competition to Victorian based AFL clubs..it ensures the puppetry of once proud VFA clubs , now goonishly beholden to young AFL strivers within their ranks and AFL manipulation and Control from AFL house...All eyes at the VFA/L are now firmly placed on the ladder of ascendency to AFL ranks, either in admin, or public relations etc etc..its not about club football anymore...

Its about AFL domination of the great Australian game....

I have a book called "100 years of Australian football" on my shelf..what a Crock of AFL sh*t...its nothing about 100 years of Australian Football...its about rewriting Australian Football History to suit the former VFL controlled AFL...

Thanks RIG.Mac had me worried I was going mad.I was sure he played at the Bay,or should I say was there as I seem to recall he was constantly injured !I did forget that he was at West first though(oops)!

I tend to agree with PA1870....

however what this then throws up is that the SANFL were wrong in their stance towards national football for the 15 years or so pre crows. The SANFL view was always to start a competition from scratch...enter 6-8 Vic sides and a few from SA & WA and away you go.

This would have then, at the end of the day resulted in more damage to the SANFL than the present arrangement (ironic, given it was the SANFL advocating it at the time). If you took say Norwood, Port and Sturt out of the SANFL and put them into a national comp then you would not have much of a comp left in the SANFL.

The final result is the best of both worlds. The SANFL get a mechanism to keep AFL quality talent in SA (or bring it to SA). They get the financial rewards from participating in the AFL. FP is full most weeks with crowd numbers the stuff of dreams 20 years ago....and we keep the SANFL.

Without generalising too much, I feel that most Victorians place a disproportionate emphasis on the competition as opposed to the club such that history starts and stops with the V/AFL. Take Geelong. Geelong won a stack of flags in the VFA, as did Hawthorn, North, Footscray....even Essendon won 4 flags in the VFA. Go to the Essendon website and see what they say about premierships....they say they have won 16. The club Essendon has in fact won 20 but they will only count those won in the VFL....very strange.

anyway....

OH MY GOD!!!!

Didn't realise that he was at the Bay. 1977 makes it a John Nicholls year. Now what was a Victorian premiership captain coach legend doing in SA?........

Following the example set by the legendary D1ck Reynolds in the early '60s, when he coached West Torrens. Showed the strength of the SANFL back then.
