Opinion We need a rebuild, shortly

You never know. May take a year to weigh up his options. It is hopeful though.

For me if it's a choice between having a KP backline of Mackenzie, Schofield and Pears/McInnes, and a midfield including Rich and Jetta, or the current lineup we have now, I'd take the former.

It's quite sad that we could go from a backline of McKenzie, Glass, Schofield and Brown to McKenzie and Schofield within a year. Brown re-signing is a pretty major priority now.

I don't know what this thread is about. We beat the Tigers, but it's time for a rebuild? Come on now, we've lost one game for the year, I think we're in pretty good shape.

Geelong board...

Shupes lost it. I think is stuck in 2011/2012 or some hybrid of the two where we are good.

Your points are logical and valid enough.
I Just think its also poor list management if we don't go deep in the draft again, too many years in a row where we won't have taken many kids.
Would make our entire midfield in a very narrow age group of 21-24. In 7-10 years time we could be loosing many many mids in a short space of time.

Rich, Jetta, Shuey, Scooter, Masten, Gaff, Wellingham, Sheppard. That's would be 8 mids all within a few years of each other. Too many to loose at once. Yes i know this is a hypothetical 10 years from now situation but thats what good list management is all about. You need an even spread of positions of different ages across the board.

I agree with what you're saying. But if it means improving our chances of winning a premiership, I wouldn't mind a steep drop off immediately after.

Steps can be taken to improve the age balance of our mids over time anyway. Waterman in next year for example makes him 5-6 years younger than guys like Shuey, Rich, Jetta, Selwood, Masten etc. Geelong traded in a homesick Caddy last year aswell, we can do something similar when the time comes.

As much as I hate to indulge this crap thread, here is an ideal offseason in my view, based on current standings:

In: Rich, Jetta
Out: Brown, #8, #26

Thoughts? Are we underpaying? Possibly not, if Brown continues his form. The breakdown would be: #8 and #26 for Rich and #22 from Brisbane, which we could ontrade to the Swans with Brown for Jetta. I think it could be done, even if it's pointless discussing it this early.

McInnes to the backline, and perhaps recruit a state league KPD or trade for Pears (by giving the Dons a pick upgrade) as depth. Our backline stocks would be weakened, particularly if Glass leaves this year, but perhaps those are the sort of risks we need to take in order to improve a huge weakness.

It would leave us with once again a small participation in the draft but these recruits are proven quality and they fit the required age bracket.

Next best scenario for me would be retaining Brown and trading a first rounder for Jetta.

Smells like damage control. Sliding down the ladder from a peak in 2011 and you want to go after two talented but middling footballers, neither of which addresses our need for bigger bodies, better contested footballers or the need for more well rounded flankers.

Jetta gives us more like breaking ability and Rich gives us another solid boot but small uncontested footballers isn't an area of weakness.

Rich or Jetta aren't required. After his superb form last season, Jetta has struggled this season, badly.

David Myers from Essendon is a big, solid body who has been playing midfield this year. Has a huge left foot kick, which can sometimes be his downfall, but he seems to have rectified that somewhat this year by lowering his eyes and hitting targets. I wouldn't be against chasing him for the right price.

Edit - WA boy.
Double edit - I think the time has passed on this one.

Dave is happy at Essendon.

Not sure how you arrived at 'damage control'. Simply making suggestions to improve our side with players of the appropriate age.

Who would you prefer instead of Rich, then? I presume you'd rather hit the draft for a big bodied inside mid? Even someone like Sheed would take 5-6 years to mature and hit his peak.

Someone like Sheed makes more sense imo unless we are close to a premiership list, I think we are not. Go to the draft :thumbsu:

Who cares where they are from. So long as they can play footy.

Think we should start re-building at seasons end. Tonight was our last chance to make a go for the 8 and we failed. Adelaide away is always a tough fixture and then of course the derby against the Dockers coming up and then followed by the Swans at home. Probably 3 losses there. We also have Geelong and Collingwood to come also. We should be able to sneak a decent top 10 draft pick. Probably the right time to call time on the careers of Glass, Embley, Nicoski. Kerr and Cox probably have another year left in them.

Glass was one of our best tonight?

A rebuild ... maybe, maybe no. We'll see how the kids play when we set aside some of the seniors, can review and decide when to do when the season ends.

We don't need a complete rebuild but we won't challenge with any of the following. The first four could go this year.

Embley, Kerr, Nicoski, A.Selwood, Cox, Glass, Priddis. and i'd be 50/50 on Butler and Waters.

Plus we've got question marks over mature guys like.

Dalziell, Hams, Dick,

Then we have some younger players that need testing. Not all will make it.

Smith, Sheppard, Hutchings, Wilson, Lycett, Colledge, Newman and Carter.

I think we need a mini rebuild. The below team is still an extremely solid team going forward and should all be around for the next 6 years. What I think we are missing is a really good lock down back pocket and a line breaking mid. I also dont think Darling can be the 2nd tall. Going forward I think we need a CHF who can give a chop out in the ruck. If McIness or McGovern could become this player then I'd be wrapt

FB - ? - McKenzie - Waters
HB - Hurn - Brown - Schoefield
C - Gaff - S Selwood - Wellingham
HF - Hill - ? - Masten
FF - Lecras - Kennedy - Darling

R - Naitanui - Shuey - ?

I/E - Sheppard - Hutchings - Smith - McInness - McGovern - Lycett - Wilson - Rosa - Newman

Unless those ? are all guns then we're going to need to find upgrades on named players. Or some of those on the interchange become genuine stars.
