We need another key defender

Seems there is alot of support for the notion of sending Ben Reid to CHB.

It may well be a masterstroke if it worked but I for one am against this. Reid could be what Franklin is at the Hawks. Yes, big wrap but I'm talking moreso of his height/speed combination moreso than anything, not comparing his ability with that of the freakishly talented Franklin.
Not even kind of close. He doesn't move anywhere near like Franklin does, nor does he possess the power, mobility and skills.

He moves like Josh Fraser imo.

Ben is what 18/19?? Franklin is 21.

Again no comparison to ability but as Reid develops and becomes stronger in the body he will possess that power and mobility- not to Franklin's extent but thereabouts.

How about John Anthony.

Surely with the plethora of options up forward, its time for Jack to do a big pre-season working defensively. He was touted as the next Full Back, surely its time to make the move.

FB: Anthony
CHB: Brown

And Harry O'Brien is our Bock type. Pace, strength and rebounds. Anthony also has the vestatility to play forward and back.

Reckon what we need more is a small defender. Im sick to death at watching the Jeff Farmer types dominate us. Harry and Goldsack cannot be the 2 expected to go to Stephen Milne.

Actually wouldnt mind having a look at Whelan from Melbourne. Good player with a bit of dog in him. Took out both Ball and Nathan Brown...pretty much has destroyed both players with 2 crunching legal tackles.

Toovey may be the small defensive option we have at the moment.

Our obvious concern still revolves around Franklin, Fevola, Riewoldt, Pavlich etc. Those versatile quick talls. They smash us every time. Brown is potentially the future here, but i question his versatility at ground level. Wouldn't mind seeing the Franklin v Harry matchup.

We definitely need another KPD, but we don't need a gorilla one. We need one to take on the athletic hard leading forwards like Riewoldt. Someone like Bock. I'd rather we spent this year shaping our young players capable of becoming KPDs and focus on the midfield. A strong midfield takes a lot of pressure off the defenders.

I think you're pretty much right with this.

I'm with TRS and Dave86 on this one. There is not really a trade out there and we would have to overpay in it I think. I'd rather go to the draft for a KPB in the 3rd round or 2nd round if someone slips like a Trengove or Lisle (unlikely from what I hear and read).

I think Anthony should go back and Reid should be trialled down there and we make the decision on who is better suited where. I think JA might surprise a few people - I really think he could be the one to play on the Riewoldt/Franklin types. Didn't he play on Buddy earlier this year in a pre-season game at Shepparton?

What we need is a midfield that is consistently good enough to take the pressure off our young developing backline. We need to draft/recruit top class midfielders. With development the defenders we have will be fine. With Brown, Obrien, Money-bags, Anthony, Maxwell, Reid, and Presti (in the short term) I think we will be alright. I can see it like this.

Goldsack--Presti--Anthony
H Shaw--Brown--Obrien

Maxwell used as a utility. Reid developed at times through the year to replace Presti. We are lacking a class small defender to defend the crumbing forwards.

Heffernone that will be a quality Back 6.
But truth be told boys. The truly "Great" backmen of our time were supported by awesome midfields. and they all start out being called no name backlines.
Silvagni was fullback of the century, because of ratten, Bradley, Diesel, etc.
Fletcher was great because of Hird, Mercuri, Bomber, Harvey etc.
Mal Michael? Glass? Look at how those two behaved when they lost Voss, Lappin, AKer, and Judd and cousins respectively.
How good is scarlett? pretty good, but he gets amazing chop outs, and the ball never gets down there because of ablett, bartel, corey and selwood.

Throw Cousins (should he have good football left in him) in to help the likes of Swan, Daisy and Pendles learn true gut running, and the 6 you mentioned, with swing men JA and Marty Clarke, will become a champion Back 6. the problems will be solved when our young kids get into the middle and figure out how good they are.
Someone mentioned in another thread how average Bartel, Ablett, and Corey looked till it all clicked. it's coming.

Although i think another key back with our 2nd round would be a wise investment (someone like Lisle), our stocks are very high ATM

We have our 3 keys in Presti, Brown and O'Brien with Reid moving into a Key back next year

Then we have our utilities in Maxwell and Goldsack

It looks pretty good for the future

Firstly No shit

Secondly we may not need to trade for one, Ruz gets fit he will slot in up front and JA can go back. Aso it seems the coaching staff have deceided reid is best at CHB and then we have Brown as a fullback, along with presti next year, Harry taking smalls, Goldsack either big or small and maxy playing loss.

Im all for recruiting a young ke back presti cant play forever but we arnt so deperate to trad for one especially not a Nathan Carroll type defender
Why are people suggesting this?! He is bloody great up front! IMO equal best forward since round 14.

Whats all this talk about reid playing down back. Has he ever played there? is he being groomed for it? Does someone know something that we dont

He played there in the last round of the VFL and MM mentioned it in the press conference after the St Kilda loss.

#1 pies - people keep mentioning JA going back because the club had set him for that role since he was drafted. He only went forward this year due to necessity. Now I know he did really well there and his kicking is exceptional but we have plenty of depth there and some worries in defence. It makes sense that people will talk about JA going back.

IMO if he does go back he will quickly become our best defender and solve the worries we have very quickly.
