After a disappointing loss to North in round 5 2007 it was an angry Paul Chapman who stood up and lead a brutal honestly session about the poor work rate of the playing group .

This was a watershed were we went from an inconsistent mediocre side who didn't even play finals they year before to a side that won 3 of the next 5 premierships .This change had nothing to do with anyone of the field , it came from the player leadership group lead by Chapman .

Geelong is desperately crying out for someone to once again stand up and set the standards , it doesn't have to be 1 person , but our leaders need to take control of this side .

there's only one Paul Chapman - get him into the rooms; reckon he'd be even less circumspect than he was during his playing career, would be an entertaining meeting.

Would also be good if Mooney and Ling would give the players a massive spray .

These younger players need to feel the blow torch a bit .

Problem is, if you believe the tale, Chappy delivered the spray to a multi-premiership standard team that was clearly underperforming.

The current group appears much more like a mediocre team performing according to its mediocre talents.

Yep, we also need another Gary Ablett...and another Joel Corey...and another Max Rooke...and another...

We will have to make do with what we've got. Many forget that you don't need 15 AA's to win a premiership, Hawthorn have only a handful of elites but it is the middle ten players or so who play to a plan and the newbies are drilled to that plan.

I don't think this group will ever be that good , that was a great side that is almost certainly going to be better than our next premiership side whenever that might be .

I do however think than the football we played against Hawthorn,Port,Adelaide,Bulldogs and North is good enough to get us in the top 4 .

Remember not only did we miss the finals in 2006 , we also had a very inconsistent 2005.

Ling's had a fair crack in the media after the past two losses ...

love the idea of Chappy coming in and teeing off, giving the kind of spray that CS seems loathe to deliver. can't see it happening, but it's fun to visualize ..

From what I've heard, CS is not at all reluctant to give an appropriate almighty spray. He does it behind closed doors. He has decorum and tact when he faces the media, but the players def cop his seething anger when needed.
I find it hard to believe that any supporters here really believe he would not give the spray.

Further to this Scarlett is already a coach at he club. And I would expect the Knights would know how to lay it down also.

Getting it from your team mate is different I think someone who could would be Menzel. He's really developed as a leader while injured and is one of the few to hold his head high most weeks this year. Considering all that he's been through you'd take his words to heart and wouldn't want to let him down.

Chapman spoke to the media but one of the main players that spoke to the group in 2007 was first year player Joel Selwood. His impact in that year shouldn't be underestimated.

We could certinaly do with some of Chapman's hardness on the field.

In relation to the OP, I’d prefer a Rooke. I find it so annoying that week after week our drivers – Danger and Sel – get buffeted, scragged, held et al and we have no one who offers any protection by applying some pain. And don’t start me on the umpires who turn a blind eye to it.

I think we’re better than a mediocre side. We have played some mediocre football in recent weeks as Danger has rightly said but when we’re “on” with everyone contributing we are quite capable of beating the best.

A few concerns for me are that we aren’t coping with sides who apply pressure relentlessly; there are too many spectators waiting for Danger or Sel to change the pattern of a game; and our back half is exposed when our mids aren’t controlling the game.

I think there is a fair amount of Myth involved with the Chappy story....but it is a good story. I am not sure why people think these guys need to be yelled at to get more from them..

With the way he throws his arms about on umpiring decisions, I have no doubt he lets the players know his frustration

we just need a new coach
Get rid of a premiership coach who has the best win/loss ratio of any coach currently going round, who has taken us into the finals every year bar one in five full seasons and looks like doing it again. A coach who has lost 9 All Australian players and more than 2000 games worth of players yet has had the ability to keep us competitive while rebuilding.

Still you could always support Carlton or St Kilda, they love to dump coaches every season or two if they do not win a premiership. Even Collingwood have woken up to the fact that sometimes throwing the baby out with the bathwater doesn't help. Look at Buckley who inherited a young team which had won a premiership and participated in two grand finals, they look like they won't make the finals again this year - for the third consecutive year. Yet Buckley has been building a good looking side and they might do something in the next few years. Lucky Buckley is coaching at Collingwood, at Geelong a bunch of losers would be calling for his head the first time they didn't make the finals.

Rooke barely played in 2007. He had nothing to do (atleast onfield) with geelong becoming a dominant side in 2007.

Sum it up in one word leadership ... Geelong of 2015 & 2016 has very few leaders ... It is evident in the frustration and lack of discipline ...oh and the results especially when we are up against it
Selwood, bartel, enright, dangerfield, taylor. We have plenty of leaders. Probably more then nearly every other team. The middle aged players simply arent pulling their weight. Our weakness is clearly Duncan, guthrie, caddy, motlop and blicavs not reaching expectations. They have talent but have plateaued or gone backwards in some cases and dont chase hard enough when the going gets tough. They are soft mentally.

Wouldn't have the same effect now because he's an outsider. Needs to come from within. Needs to be player-driven.

It's a moot point, though, because there's very little comparison between this side and 2007. It's one a lot of people have been drawing, in the media and on here, and I just don't see it. It's an easy one to make, much like the comparison of Hawthorn 2016 with Geelong 2014, but it holds little ground in reality in regards to where the two teams sat. This current side doesn't have the players or the coach that that 2007 side had; it doesn't have the innate ability to evolve like that 2007 side did. Not just that, but this side is in a much different place in regards to composition, balance and demographics. In 2007, we didn't have a slow backline made up primarily of 30-year-olds.

Just shows you what kind of players Scott develops.

We have the most talented list in the comp. but arent playing and most likely preparing nearly well enough. At what point does attention start being focussed on the coaching and fitness staff? Thompson got the best out his players. The current coaches are not.

Wouldn't call Caddy or Blicavs mentally soft, the latter being a hurdler who changed career path to pursue a game he solemnly played to become a best and fairest, clearly soft.
