We Traded Carey!!!!!!!!!

Adelaide has gained Wayne Carey and Jason Torney in a complicated trade deal involving Kane Johnson and three draft picks.

Adelaide gave Richmond Johnson and its first three draft picks – Nos 14, 30 and 45 – in exchange for Torney and Richmond’s first three draft picks – Nos four, 20 and 36.

Adelaide gave the Kangaroos draft picks four and 20 for Carey.

While Adelaide has gained superstar Carey and quality defender Torney, it is left without an early draft pick.


Adelaide’s three picks at next month’s national draft (November 24) are Nos 36, 61 and 77.

Adelaide, Richmond and the Kangaroos agreed to the trade deal in Melbourne on Friday morning.

4 and 14 was best scenario but at least we get two reasonable draft picks while adelaide gets a carey with a question mark and no reasonable draft picks, i dont think richmond did to badly out of this deal either

look back in 4 0r 5 yrs time you might get two good ones out of him and we still had the best

In light of what we got for Carey is that deal still viable for either side ?

Still its a bit of a slide from what we got for Peter Bell

there are some reasonable names on the draft table from all clubs i would not be surprised to see teams hold off on some trades to see if prices come down

i reckon we did well out of the deal...we traded one very old but brilliant player for 2 draft picks which we can use to good effect... i'm very happy with the outcome. I don't know who won the best deal....i think we all did very well out of this deal, just like we did with the porter/mckernan trade considering how watson is going to get better as well as porter in the years to come....

now i'm excited i really want to know what we're going to do with these draft picks

I think we place too much value on the possibility that you may pick a matchwinner in the draft as opposed to the fact that you have a proven matchwinner on your hands.

And Carey will win 3-4 games by himself over the course of a season which is very important when the competition is so even.

Finally, S. Black was picked up at #31 (I think). How did he slip through? Because becoming a champion requires something intangible. Has anypone got the ability pick a player with that intangible quality? Someone posted our trading history recently on this Board.

Our better players have been picked up very late in the draft which proves it is really pot luck unless you have #1 or #2.

Probably a reasonable compromise for us. I doubted we could get 2 first rounders but pick 4 and a very early second rounder is ok.

Im mildly happy as a tiger ....we got a ripper in Johnson with 5-6 seasons left in him at 24 yrs of age and hardness that we desperatley need .

Wish we could have retained no.4 ...prob wishful thinking and Geelong would have pounced ..at leats we still have first round

For North , that was the best deal you were ever going to get ...with Cats and woods only other players in Johnson deal

I reckon crows have invested heavily and I dont subscribe to Carey still being capable of kicking 50 + goals there are few precedents for top level sportsmen taking sabbaticals and returning to past glories..

Agree, but I then remember that Ablett had one and played for about 5 years after that.

While not rapt, i'm not disgusted either.

I was thinking we'd hold out a little longer to make them dance a bit more for us, but the relative ease with which all this seems to have transpired tells me that there is a bit about this deal that we dont, and probably will never know about.

I have no dount that money would have been involved. Not necessarily in the form of a payout from the Crows, but in regards to monies owed to Carey, as we all discussed months ago. We make it reasonably easy for him, he makes it a bit easier on us.

Fair enough.

While i would have thought the club might have hoped for the #14 pick as well as #4, i'm tipping they would be looking at the end result as a win-win in terms of the off and the on-field.

And at the end of the day, there aint a heap of difference between 14 and 20.

Ablett wasn't 31 YO when he came back. And he didn't have Ostitus Pubis and 2 bad shoulders. Carey is not the player he once was, and if you are honest with yourself you know he hasn't been the same player since 99. He is still very very good but not the player we remember cutting the league to pieces.

Over all I am happy with the trade, now we have to hope we get at least one kid who turns out to be a ready made player, who plays a couple of games next year. If we have to wait a couple of years for these guys to develop it will feel like we didn't get anything.

Somehow I feel Adelaide & Richmond are the real winners here...
I am a believer of, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the draft...

It is also sad, that Carey's departure is now final...We you been very, very lucky to have had a player of his ability for so long...

The deal is done and can only be judged 3-5 years down the track when:
1: We see what effect Carey has with the Crows
2: We see what effect Johnson has with the Tiges
and most importantly
3: Who we pick in the national draft and what effect they have with the Kangas.
