People are dreaming if they think we will make a prelim
Our backline is too tall, too old and too slow. It might do all right if we were playing WCE every week but we aren't.
Our midfield is cooked, Johnson and Selwood are done for the year. Caddy and Christensen have missed too many games from injury. Guthrie and GHS aren't battle hardened enough yet.
Our forward line is 1 dimensional, Kersten will get tired by the end of the year.
We should be restructuring for next year not bothering with the same failed setup.
We will probably finish 6th cos of our easy draw, maybe win 1 final then get destroyed in a semi final.
Then we can all cheer on Port to beat Freo, Sydney and the Hawks.
Cool. So then you are out for the rest of the year, as you already have us done. No need for anymore complaints from you or criticism till 2015. Enjoy your time away.
Sweet.
Go Catters
There are a lot of sentiments here in both posts that I agree with. Its easy to paint it all in the sombre tones of the negative but I don't think its the full story. Its also hard to be realistic about our place when we know the feeling of winning, and when and if we get it right we can still do it while right in front of us we can see we are no longer great
Every week we play there are more and more indicators that we are a chainsaw juggler on rollerblades , trying to keep the act all fluid and happening while moving around and coping with changing conditions, sort of worrying about the worse case of a bloody end.
But there is a certain type of attraction to all of that.
Having watched Geelong for too many years , watched them blow good list after good list , to finally get a side and an era like we had was like getting your superannuation after spending years working in a tough job. It was the pay off , it was deserved , there was no charity in it. And for me there was a sense of relief to finally get it done. Of course it became clear how good this group was , to win 1 would have been such a huge under achievement that the relief , the reprieve was a temp easing. The pressure I felt , probably unrealistically , was that this was it , it was our chance of a life time to get some back on the dreaded greedy enemies that seemed to bask in our constant underachievement.
And then it happened. In 08 .To them. Ohh please its not all some grand delusion is it? We are the real deal aren't we?
So to then to get 09 thru much harder work , one certainly felt there was the days of certainty were gone. Then in 10 the year of the long kiss goodnight , coach and star departs a season of such sweet sorrow and by the PF V the Pies , the wheels were falling off... if there was an AFL Morgue we were in it. But somehow like some urban myth story , we were not dead , there was a pulse and we added a new coach , a couple of fresh faces , the old one went one more for the road and managed get of third and perhaps most unlikely, V the side that inflicted the pain the year before. Sweet.
There was no doubt on our club , 3 in an era made us one of the greatest, arguably achieving so much against all logic of an even comp.
So now here we are , we are not what we were. The days of obvious wine and glory are past. The cups are in the window and there is little pressure of expectation. The days where we all knew how the story would end , week after week are are gone and each week brings its new twist. And that has its own upside. How engrossing is a movie where you just know the ending cause its just another slap bang shootit up run of the mill chewingum blockbuster? Throw in a crap star with a few alien car things. So what. Blah. What we have here is a story where each week is really unknown. We could fall in heap or develop or who knows what. What we have here is ride with no certainty. We have a probable outcome but know one really knows for sure.
So I'll balance my hope with an underlying defense of probability. And see how it pans outs. My logical guess is cynical is correct and we should have a focus on the future but my emotional hope always lies with Daz , someway , somehow we just may do it and with this movie I'll be staying till the credits roll.
