RB, is this based on your gut feel? Or do you have some inside knowledge?
It's based on a gut feel. But just to comfort you, it's a mighty gut. But just looking at the team now I have more confidence in duryea, goo, Stratton, Gibson, lake, schoey, birch, hodge to defend first and attack second. Also he will be more damaging between the 50m arcs.

I agree with the names you've put up in front of Suckling as defenders. He'd probably be more damaging between the arcs.

Maybe I should work on my gut a bit more. It might give me a bit more intuition. ;)

My beer gut feel also tells me Suckling will end up primarily a HFF/Wing. Barring catastrophic injury, hard to see how we won't be in flag contention for the next few years.

Lake, Mitch, Goo, Burger, Hodge, Sewell, Hale & Gibbo.
Ossie will retire.
Here is a team without any of them.
(we are in great shape).
Suckers Shoe Duryea
WhiteX Stratts Birch
Smith Lewis Hill
Ando Buddy Bruest
Rioli Rough Gunston
Bailey Shiels Pup
Grimmers Savage Hallahan Simpkin
Spanger can come in if Buddy goes to GWS.
We are overloaded with forwards - will probably need another key defender. And a genuine ruckman.
Well Big Boy as a ruckman & Frawley as a defender.... Lost buddy but as you said overloaded anyways.

Yeah, I'd restructure it a bit too (and add Schoey):

FF: Gunston - Ceglar - Puopolo
HF: Breust - Roughie - Rioli
Ce: Hill - Lewis - Smith
HB: Birchall - Schoey - Litherland
FB: Duryea - Frawley - Stratton

Ru: McEvoy
RR: Langford
Ro: Shiels

I/C: Suckling, Spang, Whitecross, Anderson, Hartung, Woody, Hallahan, O'Brien, Lowden, JOR, Heatherly...

That team is still top 8 material.

The U26 team I find quite interesting too:

FB: Stratton, Brand, Duryea
HB: Whitecross, Schoenmakers, O'Rourke
C: Smith, Anderson, Hill
HF: Breust, Gunston, Rioli
FF: O'Brien, Grimley Ceglar
R: McEvoy, Shiels, Langford

I: Hallahan, Woodward, Litherland, Hartung
E:Sicily, Kelly, Cheney

Omitted: Lowden, Willsmore, Webster, Tatupu, Heatherley

I don't think at least 6-8 of them to be here in a few years but looking at this age profile I'd say a KPF and KPD are the two biggest weaknesses. Plenty of mids and flankers. Shiels or Smith for captain? Hopefully there's a succession plan there too (for life after Lewis of course).

I'll pass on O'brien, I don't feel as though we need him so long as Scilily comes on who looks a hell of a lot better.

Very different players though aren't they?

Like comparing Roughie to Gunston.

Surely we can accommodate and will need both?

Kelly's been delisted so he won't be there

Yeah I haven't seen much of him, only that game he played against Brisbane in round 1

O'Brien is a developing key forward. He's around the height of Roughead but needs to work hard in the gym to achieve the necessary physical characteristics of a CHF before he'll make a mark in the AFL. He does have sticky hands and is a reasonably good set shot, but can be worked underneath or away from the ball too easily at present.

Sicily is more a medium-tall forward than a key forward. He's a few centimetres shorter than Gunston but plays a bit like Jack. A good recent comparison could be Ben Dixon but he's a bit more mobile than Dixon was for Hawthorn. He plays with his heart on his sleeve and needs to rein in his emotions a bit, as he can give away stupid (and potentially costly) frees and 50 metre penalties due to his hotheadedness. But that aggression also means he stands out.

If you can track it down (it'll be difficult to do so now that it's more than two weeks since the VFL grand final) have a look at the VFL grand final. Not the right result from a Box Hill perspective, but you'll get a good idea of where O'Brien and Sicily are both at in terms of their development. Sicily could, with a good pre-season, sneak in for a debut early in 2015.

So two of the eight have retired, one per year.

Clearly there wont be one per year for the next six years. The premiership will mean the others go around one more time at least. Not wanting to hasten the end but how will it pan out ? Can we see any of them going on beyond another three seasons ? If not its an average of two per year for three years, and may mean one or two are persuaded to go slightly early at the end of 2015

One possiblity

2015: Hale and Burger 31 and 33
2016: Lake, Hodge, Mitchell. 34, 32, 34
2017: Gibson 33

At the ned of 2017 lewis will be 32 and rough 31

Need to lure JPK home, definitely possible now that the Bloodz have approached him to renegotiate his contract with t he Swans :)
Yes the list of free agents over the next three years would cure any depression from my post about retirements

Current tpp salary amounts will be as important as the age and fitness of those players

6 in two years I think. Can't stretch it out too much, because as you indicated Lewis and Roughie will be due to hang up the boots by then.

Lake is guaranteed to go at end of year I think. Maybe Hale and at least one of Mitchell/Burgoyne. The remaining the next season. Gawd, how strange will it feel, a Mitchell and Hodge-less Hawthorn. :(

2017 will definitely be the marker year that will test how our depth/youngster now, just how far they have come along.

I predict.
2015 Threepeat Lake retires
2016 Finish 6 - 8 Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne, Hale retire
2017 Mini rebuild 6 - 8 Gibbo reitres
2018 Lewis captains flag then retires
2019 Roughead captains back to back then retires
2020 Langford captains another threepeat then retires to replace his dad on the AFL Comission.

Let's face it, nobody know including the players.
We have topped up to win the flag again in 2015 whilst Mitch, Hodge, Lake, Gibbo & Burger at still at the top of their game

If Cegs and McEvoy continue to develop I would not be alarmed with both Lake and Hale retiring at the end of next year.

Don't know why, I get the feeling Burgers may also pull stumps on an amazing career then too.
I think Lake is a certainty to retire at the end of next season plus Hale is fairly probable.

I think it will come down to how their bodies are holding up as to how long they play for - Burgers, Hodge and Mitchell. Ideally we dont want to lose all three in one year.

I think we could get gibson to play through to around 2017 if he is played as a third tall type only.

Of course injuries will play a big part in how long these guys continue to play for

I'm a little more pessimistic than some re our oldies. I think lake and hale have 12 months left and Hale will play half the year at Box Hill.
Gibbo slowed down markedly this year both in foot speed and he missed several critical attempts at the golden fist that he would previously have got to. Frawley will help but Gibbo might only have one to go as well.
Burger was looking great this year and will go for 2 more.
Hodge and Mitchell are not getting any faster and I fear their form may drop off if they can't get their bodies to the contests as they have before. Hopefully we get similar outputs from them in 15 but they will both struggle in 16.
Plenty of opportunities for young blokes to step up coming soon.
