No reason that we couldn't make up the difference in contract if Saints theoretically offered their 2x firsts and Melbourne weren't coming to the party. Ie we pay $100k a year of his contract to ensure we get good value at the trade table.
I think you can only do that when trading contracted players, not uncontracted ones.

Now that it's pretty clear we want 2 first-rounders, we won't even get pick 10. Melbourne will refuse to trade that. They will trade Watts for a high first rounder or early 2nd and will offer that and pick 27.
I don't see how a player you're willing to pay 750-900k pa
Isn't worth 2 first rounders!

It looks like Melbourne are apparently hawking a couple of their players around. I wonder if the following might be a deal that would work:-

Lever to melbourne.
Salem (melbourne player) and Adelaide's 2017 first round pick to Carlton
Melbourne's first round pick and Gibbs to the Crows

Exactly. They're overpaying him, so they can overpay us too.
I hear this sentiment a lot, but surely it's actually the opposite of this?

They're offering to overpay him BECAUSE they don't want to overpay at the trade table. They want to make him an offer so good that he chooses them to the exclusion of other clubs, which gives them leverage at the trade table. It also takes the PSD threat out of the equation.

If they were willing to cough up big at the trade table they'd just offer him the same that other clubs are offering for him and then "win" the trade war on the size of the draft picks they offer.

That's why we got such a bumper windfall for Patty!

That's case in point, though. Geelong knew they had Danger dead to rights, he didn't want to go anywhere else. It was there or here. So they didn't offer any more than was absolutely needed to get him to commit to them, and then were free to lowball us at the trade table.

Melbourne doesn't have the family allure over Lever compared to other Victorian clubs, so they need to offer something a bit extra to get him to choose them and them alone. If big money helps that to happen, then they can also lowball us at the trade table.

Given that players have to agree to trades, you can only really expect quality draft picks in return if there is a genuine bidding war for Jake's services. If one club just blows the others out of the water with crazy money, then they and Jake have all the leverage.

Nah. Quality player. But I am suggesting playing him as a defender and not a forward which is a risk. I reckon he would be an excellent like for like replacement for Jake Lever. Knows how to mark, knows how to find the ball, just cant kick goals. Not sure how his spoiling is, but given he is a great mark I would think he would have good timing. Would give a great marking option for kicking out after a behind as well.

No dont like that. If Salem is up for grabs, I want him. For me Gibbs is going to be 29 years old. His value has already been spent. He is not worth Salem.

I wouldn't even do Watts and Salem for Lever straight up.
I would. Definitely.

Agreed, probably the worst trade proposal I've seen. To walk out without even one first round pick would be disastrous (unless we were miraculously getting one of Petracca/Oliver/Viney).

There's never a bidding war for services

I'd suggest we've been the opposite of a destination club.

But if you listen to player managers, and I've had some access to Paul Connors, Melbourne is most definitely emerging as a destination club. Lewis chose us for a reason and Hibberd chose Melbourne.

Players at clubs know who are emerging. Lever and his manager would be infinitely aware of our list profile.

You may rightly think Lever is a mercenary, but he also wants to join a club that he perceives has a strong chance of success. He'd look at Petracca, Viney, Hunt, Oliver, Salem, Brayshaw, Tyson, Hogan, Gawn and McDonald as the foundations for future success. You're welcome to name North's 25 and under equivalent
So a club that didn't make the 8 as opposed to one that is hosting a preliminary final? Mercenary

This guy did say yesterday that Hinkley was going to GC so not sure how reliable he is. Doesn't seem like a knob like the tradewhisperer though, especially since he's bagged Cornes and Rucci.

So in effect we lose Lever for 10 & 18 and Cameron for 27 & 41.

Thoughts?

He also said Crows were going cold on Gibbs as Carlton still want 2 firsts.

I thought Melbourne was the team first round draft picks went, to never reach their potential?

Pretty sweet deal for Brisbane. Pick up Charlie Cameron for an 18-27 downgrade.

And slide their 3rd rounder up a fraction on top.

Look through melbournes list and try find a player that isnt signed till 2019 or could make our best 22. There is none. If we deal with them its going to be draft picks. We need to go hard for their 2018 1st coupled with their pick 10 this year.
