Wearing a footy guernsey in public, yes or no?

Don’t often get to see Brisbane wear the Fitzroy jumper often.. let along run out to the Fitzroy theme song. So, tomorrow I will be wearing my Fitzroy jumper

Good on you.

I wear my Fitzroy jumper both to Brunswick Street to watch Fitzroy and also to watch the Brisbane Lions in Melbourne. Don't care what anyone thinks. Who the hell are they?

I wear my Hawthorn guernsey while shopping at JB-HIFI

You’re over the age of 16.

It’s a cold, late Tuesday afternoon and you’re ducking into the shops to pick up some meat and condiments. If you’ve got a club jumper during this task..I’d suspect you’re a slightly mentally defective who is one step away from being a furrie.

Friday and Saturday afternoons…anyone can wear them. All
Night long… any age

When I was in Canada, it was a bit of a culture shock to see guys everywhere, of all ages, wearing their team's hockey jerseys out and about (oot and aboot!) all week long, almost always with their favourite player's name on the back.

I used to be of the opinion that you stop wearing the jersey once you're older than the oldest player left in the AFL. But really, in Canada, it was kind of refreshing, to be honest.

There's a bloke in Kangaroo Point who frequently walks around near the Gabba wearing an Eagles Guernsey.

Good on him but I'd personally save that for GameDay or footy training myself.

Lol might be my brother, but he lives in Coorparoo and I doubt he walks that far.

However he does wear his eagles gear out every now and again...more likely a polo or cap though

I like it but seams to be a statement thing.
i wear a collared short as i enter the mcc you see.
But in the outer i tend to have a jersey in my backpack to wear for fun.
Dont mind the jersey wearing it.
But think this is more reserved for players.
But for fun i don it on.
I wore 1990 one in the 2023 grand final when i attended along with shorts as it was a hot day.
MCC but had a collared shirt underneath.

in another country or on holiday maybe. I'd stick to soccer kits here.

Please don't tell me you wear one of "the usual"......Barca, Liverpool, man City, P$g, arsenal, madrid etc

I always cringe hard af when I see people wear them, they're as mainstream and awkward as any AFL or NRL jersey these days (even more so I'd say because you question how genuine the motivation is for wearing them and you're just pouring more money in some billionaire ****wits business model)

When I see someone repping a Dutch or Greek or Polish or weird random club from lower divisions or far flung countries or club or even something like Boca Juniors etc...well I let that slide and actually quite rate it haha

Hockey jerseys are baggier.

The big issue is that AFL gurnseys are very slim fit, rather then being baggy.

I genuinely think there is a lot more to it - Australians are very self conscious about that kind of thing in a way that Australians aren’t. It’s not like we are comfortable with middle aged guys wearing cricket, rugby or soccer team shirts either.

I wear mine on game days or watch party's when my club plays away. No issue.

I also am generally wearing the clubs footy merch for the most part so the jump between day to day merch onto guernsey wouldn't be great. Although, other materials breathe better when it's incredibly humid here

This is where the branded merch vs afl/generic (not Best & Less style, think more the AFL store variety with club logo only etc) can come into play. The generic stuff isn't great... but as a Hawthorn supporter puma/adidas/ sketches/underarmor (ISC) has been serviceable.

I'd love Hawthorn to be with Nike at some point. Even though their quality has dipped in recent years, its still pretty good!

The quality has been shocking. I spend on average $350 year on year on merch just to support the club given our irrelevance and my fanaticism, but the material has been poor.

I thought it'd just be my club but seems like it could be across the board.

Grown men dressed as giant toddlers 😂
Sometimes it's just nice seeing some footy gear from any club when you live in footy barren land.

I guess it probably doesn't mean much for those living in footy heartland but honestly, any footy support seen out this way brings a smile.

Damn I'll be honest I didn't expect this topic to even generate this much discussion, not complaining though. Loving the different perspectives.

When I saw the occasional footy merch being worn in Sweden when I lived there for a few years of always walk up to them and end up having a long in depth convo :)

Most were Aussies on holidays or living there...but I'd meet the occasional swede who had done a WHV in Aus and adopted a team
