Some potentially mouth watering finals in the first week. If the favourites win to finish off round 24; Giants, Dogs, Lions, Suns, week 1 could look like this:

QF; 1 Crows v 4 Pies; always close games regardless of venue
QF; 2 Cats v 3 Lions; Lions beat them in PF last year at MCG
EF; 5 Giants v 8 Suns; the 2 expansion teams in Suns first final
EF; 6 Dogs v 7 Hawks; repeat of last years EF

If the Suns win by a few goals more than what the Hawks lose by, then they swap

QF; 1 Crows v 4 Pies
QF; 2 Cats v 3 Lions
EF; 5 Giants v 8 Hawks
EF; 6 Dogs v 7 Suns

If we win Wed night i do not want to play GWS
as it looks now you'll be playing Freo in Perth if the Hawks lose. Tough first ever final, off the shorter break, on the longest road trip in footy, and them winning 6 of the last 7 coming into finals if they win today.

Thursday- Adelaide v Collingwood
Friday- GWS v Suns
Saturday- Geelong v Hawthorn
Saturday- Freo v Brisbane

Although recent history suggests those be swapped around, but I’m not sure the broadcasters would want Freo game on Friday night.

Best fixture for broadcast would be QF Thurs and Fri night with both elimination finals on Saturday, but the league hasn’t done that for a while.

Tough ask for Hawks to play 2 finals in the first week

Loser of QF won’t have a two day break advantage over the EF winner.

Since Suns are playing on Wednesday, it makes sense for them to not play until Saturday.

I think it’ll be:

Thursday night - Adelaide v Collingwood, AO

Friday night - GWS v Hawthorn, Engie

Saturday - Geelong v Brisbane, MCG

Saturday night - Fremantle v Gold Coast, Optus

The AFL have been consistent in recent years to play the QF followed by the relevant EF to keep breaks relatively close but favouring the QF loser. So you’re probably right with this schedule.

Happened in 2020, and would be ideal for broadcasters so could see it happening

In recent years, except 2023, it’s been the other way around to allow the higher team to play the first PF, but the Gold Coast situation and the fact a Freo v Gold Coast game is terrible for Friday night footy, I think this is the most sensible fixture.
