This draft is pretty confusing in terms of who goes where, etc. With some seemingly coming into calculations and others falling away, etc. So here's v3 of my phantom draft, bear in mind the amount of talls available early and their place in draft calculations, etc. Has made guessing who goes where very difficult not only for me but I'm sure for everyone else too.
#1 - St Kilda - Christian Petracca
Still think its a toss up here between Petracca and McCartin given the Saints need to plug up their midfield and find the heir to Nick Riewoldt (who I doubt will play on beyond 2016). As it stands Petracca is the best available. If the Saints go Petracca at #1 expect them to go tall (i.e. McKenzie, Lamb) with one or both of picks #21 and #22.
#2 - Melbourne - Angus Brayshaw
Still have him at #2 he's all class and will bring good leadership qualities to a club that is sorely lacking in true leaders.
#3 - Melbourne - Jake Lever
Melbourne's forwardline is a shambles no doubt, but thinking about it I see their greatest weakness as being their key defensive stocks especially with James Frawley now a Hawk. Lever brings leadership as well as his notable skill, and is the type the Dees can build their defensive 6 around (lets face it if you were Roos you'd be worried about the ability of their current key backs not to haemorrhage goals.
#4 - GWS - Patrick McCartin
Just seems logical that McCartin goes to GWS now, Boyd is gone and Patton is injured meaning Cameron needs support I would think that McCarthy or Lobb gets first crack, but McCartin gives them further depth.
#5 - Collingwood - Jayden Laverde
Apparently they're after tall mids and flankers, so Laverde fits the bill perfectly. Adds some real versatility to the side, with his ability to play back, midfield or up forward.
#6 - GWS - Sam Durdin
Can play play as a key back or forward, the Giants would welcome that versatility (aside from trying to turn McCarthy into a key defender), he'll likely settle as a defender and would provide the Giants with someone who can play a Jake Carlisle type role (i.e. can swing forward or back).
#7 - GWS - Jarrod Pickett
Do they go for the speedy mid/half forward flanker or for another key back. Lots of talk linking Pickett to the Giants so lets wait and see on that one, for now and entirely based on rumours lets say he goes to GWS. Pickett reportedly is unlikely to be affected by the "go home" factor.
#8 - Gold Coast - Kyle Langford
I can see Gold Coast as being in the market for a versatile utility. Can seemingly play most positions and GCS, might want to be sure they've got someone who can come in and cover almost any postion whether it be midfield, defense or forward. It's hard to tell what if any holes the Suns need to fill though.
#9 - Collingwood - Darcy Moore
F/S, has played very well all year. Would be equally as good playing as either a key forward or back, will likely settle in defence though given the Pies probably have all the key forward depth that they need at this stage.
#10 - Geelong - Paul Ahern
Losing Christensen will hurt and while not immediately, Ahern could come in and fill a similar role. Cats are pretty well stocked in the key forward and defensive posts for mine so they'll take Ahern as a goal-kicking MID/HFF. Question is do they take a mid or a key back, i.e. Goddard? They're well stocked for key fowards and rucks so Wright continues to slide...
#11 - West Coast - Lachlan Weller
The Eagles would love to add some speed and class to their midfield rotations and Weller brings plenty of both. Others in the mix here are Nakia Cockatoo, Liam Duggan, Paul Ahern, Corey Ellis, etc.
#12 - Richmond - Jordan De Goey
Ticks pretty much all the boxes for what the Tigers need. Leg speed, hard worker (can find his own ball), versatility (can play as an inside/outside mid, HBF or HFF), x-factor, class. Settle him into one position (with rotations), and watch him grow as a player. Likely see him being developed as an inside mid (to help out Cotchin) who rotates forward.
#13 - Fremantle - Hugh Goddard
Fremantle will be in desperate need of a key defender with McPharlin's body starting to fail on him. Goddard should take over that spot in the side in the next 2-3 years. His versatility will be an asset to the Dockers, but if his Champs are anything to go by he's a much better defender than a forward.
#14 - Adelaide - Caleb Marchbank
Like the Dockers, the Crows seem to need a key back most of all and Marchbank definitely fills the bill here, would form a pretty formidable 3 talls in defense alongside All-Australian's Daniel Talia and Brodie Smith. Peter Wright is a possibility but with the addition of Lowden I'm not so sure the Crows would take him.
#15 - Gold Coast - Jarrod Garlett
Hard to tell what the Suns will be after really as they have pretty good depth in all positions. But a bit of speed through the midfield and forwardline would be useful.
#16 - North Melbourne - Liam Duggan
The Roos are apparently big fans of Duggan and would not let him slide past #16 if he is available. Adds speed and class to the Roos midfield.
#17 - Essendon - Peter Wright
With the departures of Paddy Ryder (traded) and Fraser Thurlow (delisted), the Bombers need to take a tall in the draft and if Wright is available as a few clubs seem to think he will be then the Bombers will snap him up. Would compliment Daniher perfectly, does seem to need to work on his contested marking but that should develop as he gets stronger.
#18 - Sydney - Isaac Heeney
The Swans are getting an absolute steal here and they know it. If he wasn't a pre-nominated Academy selection and on the open market, I'd be willing to bet he'd be going in the top 3. Would probably even push Petracca for the #1 slot.
#19 - Carlton - Corey Ellis
Lets just assume that the Blues will again be following their usual pattern and going for a midfielder with their first pick despite the glaring need for a KPP. Adds a bit of leg speed and hardness to the Blues midfield.
#20 - Essendon - Nakia Cockatoo
Nakia could add some real explosiveness and x-factor to the Bombers midfield, which is widely documented as being a bit too one-paced especially when Zaharakis has an off game. Depending on who's available the Bombers may take on of Menadue, Blakely, Lamb, McKenzie, Duggan, etc. here just depends on who the club see's as being the best available player who fills a need.
#21 - St Kilda - Tom Lamb
With the Saints likely to lose a fair few taller players due to retirements and delistings in the next few years the versatility of Lamb could come in useful, if the club makes him work hard who knows, Lamb has a lot of potential (oh how I loathe that word) and could be anything.
#1 - St Kilda - Christian Petracca
Still think its a toss up here between Petracca and McCartin given the Saints need to plug up their midfield and find the heir to Nick Riewoldt (who I doubt will play on beyond 2016).
