What strange coincidences can you think of in football?

Nic Nat, Yarren and Walters all grew up on the same street.

Up until round 7 this year Hawthorns last 6 wins were 46, 46, 3, 3, 3, and 46.
There's already a fantastic thread on this topic in this board. Do a search for it imo.

Not sure that's a coincidence since they all knew each other and played for the same junior club and WAFL colts team.

I mean it's not like Nic Nat ran into Walters during a Western Derby and was like 's**t, I remember you from primary school. Didn't know you played footy.'.

In 2006, the West Coast Eagles defeated the Sydney Swans by 1 point in the Grand Final; however in their next Grand Final in 2015, the West Coast Eagles were thrashed by Hawthorn by 46 points. When the Eagles next met the Swans in 2007, they again defeated the Sydney Swans by 1 point, and in their first encounter with Hawthorn in 2016 were again thrashed by the Hawks by 46 points.

The West Coast Eagles have made 6 grand finals, three in odd years (1991, 2005 & 2015), three in even years (1992, 1994 & 2006). The Eagles have won all of the even year Grand Finals, and lost all of the Grand Finals played in odd years.

West Coast, Geelong and Adelaide have all won and lost games by 135 points. Geelong were on the wrong end of a 135-point thrashing by Hawthorn in 1986, and crushed the West Coast Eagles by 135-points in a night game in Perth in 2008, the game where Cats coach Mark Thompson ate a sandwich while coaching the team. The West Coast Eagles themselves had beaten the Adelaide Crows by 135-points at Subiaco Oval in 1995, while the Crows destroyed the GWS Giants by 135-points in 2013.

In 1941, the premierships of the four major leagues were all won by red & blue teams; Melbourne (VFL), Port Melbourne (VFA), Norwood (SANFL) & West Perth (WAFL).

In 1990, Collingwood (black & white) defeated Essendon in the Grand Final of a 5 week finals series thanks to a drawn final to end a long premiership drought. Swan Districts (black & white) defeat the Claremont Tigers in the WAFL Grand final. Port Adelaide Magpies (black & white) win their 3rd SANFL premiership in a row. Fast forward 20 years to 2010, and Collingwood crush St Kilda in the Grand Final replay of a 5 week finals series to end a long Magpie premiership drought. Swan Districts defeat the Claremont Tigers in the WAFL Grand Final, the Swans' first premiership in 20 years. In the VFL, the North Ballarat Roosters (black & white) win their third premiership in a row.

Not so much a coincidence, more a random stat, but Jack Billings of St Kilda has played 34 career games, and has been awarded 36 free kicks for, but only has a staggering 3 free kicks against to his name.

All 3 free kicks he has given away have been this year, so prior to this season he had played 25 games without giving away a single free kick. Surely some sort of record.

In 2006, the West Coast Eagles defeated the Sydney Swans by 1 point in the Grand Final

To add to this...

2005: Eagles beat Sydney in QF by 4 points; Sydney beats Eagles in GF by 4 points; Eagles player Ben Cousins wins the Brownlow; South Fremantle (same colour as Sydney) beat Subiaco in the WAFL GF.

2006: Sydney beat Eagles in QF by 1 point; Eagles beat Sydney in GF by 1 point; Sydney player Adam Goodes wins the Brownlow; Subiaco beat South Fremantle (same colour as Sydney) in the WAFL GF.

Eerie.

Not sure if this is a coincidence or if there's a causation here (I suspect there's a causation) but since 1997 every premiership side has had at least one previous premiership player

Might not sound too impressive given the amount of multiple winners but you have many years (1997, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010) where the flag winner had come from a different club, and four times there has been a grand finalist with no previous premiership players and they've lost (1997, 2000, 2003, 2013)

Yes, these are amazing coincidences.

They didn't work so well for Ashley Sampi and Travis Gaspar, who spent 2005 & 2006 going between the West Coast Eagles and their WAFL club South Fremantle.

In 2005, they missed the South Fremantle WAFL premiership as they were playing finals for the Eagles, including the GF loss to the Sydney Swans. In 2006, they were not part of the Eagles finals campaign that resulted in a premiership, but did play for the South Fremantle Bulldogs team in the WAFL finals, which ended with an 83-point thrashing from Subiaco in the Grand Final.

The Lions 4 grand finals from 2001-2004. Obviously they went

2001 - beat Essendon
2002 - beat Collingwood
2003 - beat Collingwood
2004 - lost

Then you look at the VFL premiers from 100 years earlier

1901 - Essendon
1902 - Collingwood
1903 - Collingwood
1904 - Lions

Melbourne were also premiers in 1900, but runner up in 2000.

There has been some coincidences with Grand Final results in the 2010s to date when compared with the 1910s as follows:

Collingwood are premiers in both 1910 & 2010
Collingwood lose the grand final in both 1911 & 2011.
The Swans lose the 1912 Grand Final but win it in 2012.
The Swans lose the 1914 & 2014 Grand Finals.

Are you telling me I have to wait for 2054....just to lose?!
