Sometimes games produce results & scores that are just downright weird. There were quite a few of these in the early 1990s:

Round 6 1991: North Melbourne vs Sydney Swans at MCG - A high scoring match in which the Swans had kicked 19.6 to half time and had a 30 point lead. By the 10 minute mark of the third quarter they had extended their score to 21.8-134 and led by 36 points - but that would be the last time they would score for the rest of the day. North came back to trail by only 2 points at 3/4 time, and kicked 8.8 in the last quarter to win easily by 54 points - 27.26-188 to 21.8-134.

Round 11 1992: Geelong vs St Kilda at Kardinia Park - On face value, Geelong's 19.15-129 to 18.18-126 victory over St Kilda doesn't appear strange - but the Saints quarter by quarter scores were 3.3, 8.8, 13.13 & 18.18!

Round 3 1993: Brisbane Bears vs Melbourne at the GABBA - Keen to celebrate their permanent move to the GABBA, the Bears seemed set to make light work of the Demons, leading by 43 points halfway through the third quarter. Melbourne then staged an amazing revival, kicking 9.6 to nil to 3/4 time to lead by 17 points at the last change. But the Dees ran out of legs in the final quarter, the Bears coming back to win by 2 points.

Round 21 1993: Fitzroy vs Brisbane Bears at Princes Park - Fitzroy thumped future merger partners the Brisbane Bears by 110 points, 23.15-153 to 5.13-43. It was the quarter by quarter scores that were stranger, with the Lions leading 5.5 to 0.0 at 1/4 time, 11.7 to 1.3 at 1/2 time and an amazing 20.13 to 1.5 at 3/4 time, before the Queenslanders added some late goals.

Round 19 1994: St Kilda vs Brisbane Bears at Waverley Park - In wet and gloomy conditions, St Kilda kept the Bears to 1 goal in 115 minutes of play; but a 5 minute lapse in the third quarter allowed Brisbane to kick 7 goals and it was enough for the Bears to win 8.7-55 to 5.15-45. These teams often played strange games in Melbourne in the early 1990s; in Round 23 1991 St Kilda demolished Brisbane by 120 points 27.12-174 to 7.12-54 at Moorabbin, but the Bears had trailed by only 4 goals at half time. The Round 10 1992 game saw a similar result at Moorabbin, St Kilda winning by 108 points 25.18-168 to 9.6-60, but this time it was a reverse; the Saints had a 14 goal lead by half time, and eased up in the second half. The 1993 game at Waverley wasn't strange from a scoring perspective, but was the infamous hailstorm match.

Years later, strange games still occur, and often it seems at Football Park Adelaide:

Semi Final 2002 - Adelaide vs Melbourne at Football Park - The Adelaide Crows jumped the Demons early, leading 8.2 to 1.4 at 1/4 time and it already looked over. Melbourne then reduced the deficit to 17 points at 1/2 time, then took control in the third quarter to lead at one stage by 28 points. Adelaide steadied to trail by 22 at 3/4 time, then blew Melbourne apart in the last, winning by 12 points in the end.

Round 18 2004 - Adelaide vs North Melb at Football Park -The Adelaide Crows beat the Kangaroos in a low scoring game in which the scores were 0.3 to 1.7, 0.10 to 1.8, 2.17 to 2.10 & 5.19-49 to 5.12-42.

Round 15 2005 - Adelaide vs Bulldogs at Football Park - The Bulldogs had a score of 5.0 in the third quarter - their final score was 5.5, in a 74 point hiding from the Crows.

Which other weird games stick in your mind?

I don't remember what year but there was a game in Perth where the Bulldogs kicked 8 goals to nil against the Eagles in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Eagles then went on to kick 8 goals to nil. I don't remember the result but the was a decent melee at half time. I'm sure someone will remember this game.

=4th biggest 1/4 time deficit to come back and win

Can't remember where I was exactly, was probably either Sydney or Brisbane, I watched the game from my hotel room and couldn't believe that Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 8 goals to zip in the first quarter yet was behind at half time.

Yeah I was at that game, it was an amazing game to watch. The Eagles went on to win. Also it was at the WACA. The match was in 1997 and details are here http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_match_statistics?mid=802

However the match with the melee that ended up with Sumich being strangled unconcious by Danny Southern was I believe at Subiaco Oval and a different match? I believe it was Round 24 1994.

Ahh yes. Alastair Lynch kicked 7 goals that day - and had 68 for the season.

He was later named AA Full Back for 1993.

I have a book lying around somewhere at home that has a pretty comprehensive history of games with obscure scores.

I'll have to hunt it down.

it was meant to be at AAMI but some stupid agreement between the VFL and MCG saw it changed.

Round 10 1985, Geelong played Richmond at Waverley, and a typical low-scoring sort of game saw the scores Richmond 9.8.62 to Geelong 7.7.49

Amazingly, Geelong absolutely blitzed the Tigers with an 11-goal last quarter to win by 50 points....18.12.120 to 10.10.70!!

There was a game in early 1976 i think also at Waverley which saw the Dogs beat Fitzroy something like 4.15.39 to 3.16.34 or some such....amazing low-scoring game.

Hawthorn twice did to Geelong an amazing feat (one which Cat fans though would shudder at). In Round 21 1986 and the opening round of 1990 (Grand final replay no less) the Hawks turned around a narrow Cat lead early in the 3rd quarter to smash Geelong on each occasion by over 100 points. 225-90 in 1986, and 194-79 in 1990. Imagine a Grand Final replay being as lopsided as 1990's was!!

Essendon also in 1986 went from trailing 5.15.45 to 7.4.46 against the Cats at Windy Hill to winning by 97 points, in what was to be Mark Jackson's last game at AFL level.

Was just perusing through my copy of "Every Game Ever Played" and Collingwood had a similar effort against Geelong in Round 8, 1955. Their quarter by quarter scores that day were 1.1, 3.3, 7.7 & 11.11.

Later that season, Geelong played St.Kilda and had quarter by quarter scores of 5.4, 9.7, 15.14 and 19.17.

Round 2, 1956 - North Melbourne took a 3 point lead into 1/4 time against Geelong, 2.1 to 2.4. North Melbourne remained goalless for the rest of the match, ending up losing by 88 points, 16.14 to 2.10.

Round 21, 1982 - Sydney lead Richmond by 48 points at 1/4 time, 8.3 to 0.3, but ended up losing by 17 points.

Collingwood have not scored a goal in the 2nd quarter against Geelong so far in 2009. In the NAB Cup grand final, Geelong scored 6.5 to 0.1 in the 2nd quarter, and kicked 8.3 to 0.4 in the 2nd quarter in round 3.

How about the 2007 Grand Final for weird in another fashion:
Geelong 24.19.163 def Port 6.8.44...

-Geelong had not won a premiership for 44 years
-Geelong's score of 163 (1963 was last premiership)
-163+44=207!
-The two players on Geelong's list not to play in either the AFL or VFL premiership was Mark Blake (no.24) and Matt Egan (no.19)

I was at this game and despite not barracking for either side it is the most entertaining game I've ever been to.

The strangest one I ever saw was an SANFL night competition (think it was called the Escort Cup back then??) between Sturt and Glenelg back in the 80s.

Glenelg were goalless to 3 quarter time, but came back with 10 goals in the last quarter (and IIRC they were not full length quarters) to snatch the game.

Certainly not goalless to 3 quarter time, but it was about a 10 goal margin. At Footy Park. One of those last quarters where every single bounce of the ball had to go in their favour, to make up the margin... and it did. And yes, it was from an era when cigarette companies proudly sponsored sport!

In the 'not to be bragged about' files from the SANFL, Norwood the weekend before last led West Adelaide all day (i.e. kicked the first score of the game and were never headed from there) before being beaten with a goal kicked with less than 15 seconds to play in the match.

Anyone know the last 'led all day but were beaten' result in the AFL? I certainly remember the Sydney v Roos game late in 2004 at the SCG where North overcame a 40-odd point 3/4 time deficit to win, nearly at the last gasp, but I don't know whether Sydney were always ahead in that match.

The most lopsided match that I've been to, when it comes to an individual forward's scoring performance, was early 2000s at the MCG: Melbourne v Collingwood at a time when Melbourne were mediocrities and Collingwood were just woeful. Melbourne were probably always destined to win the game just by being less bad. The always-unpredictable Jeff Farmer had done a big fat nothing in the first half, to the point where he even spent part of it on the pine.

Then in the 2nd half he just came out and put on a clinic. Kicked 9 goals in one of the most dazzling individual halves of footy you will ever see. Wouldn't have mattered if they put 5 blokes on him. Had a very gettable shot for 10 in the dying moments of the match, too.

You cannot possibly forget the 2005 Sydney and Geelong SF :thumbsu:

Also I am suprised that the 2001 game between Essendon and North hasn't been mentioned. North Kicked 12 goals to 2 in the opening quarter, essendon came storming back in the second and kicked 10 goals to 4 in the second, and after a fairly even third quarter, Essendon stormed home with 8 goals to 3 in the last to win 171-159

Essendon 2.3 12.4 19.8 27.9 171
Kangaroos 12.1 16.1 22.4 25.9 159

I heard from a friend that he knew of a lower-league game that finished with a final score of 989 to 0 (he didn't specify goals vs. behinds or who). If anyone has information on that game I'd love to see it.

I was one of the few poeple who loved watching St Kilda vs Sydney in 2002 (or 2003?) when the half time score was 2.2 to 1.4. Sydney still only had 2.6 at 3 quarter time, but opened up in the last term with 6 goals.

It ended in a 56-all draw after Daniel Wulf missed a banana from 15 metres out on a definate drop-punt kicking angle... all under the roof!

Another weird scorer was the day at Aurora that North got the jump on the Hawks with 4 early goals in the first quarter. Although the Kangas didnt kick another goal all day, they werent out of the game until 5-6 minutes remaining, on a perfect winters day in Launceston. I remember the game fondly... I won $250 with the correct margin ticket, god bless Brad Morans wayward kicking :thumbsu:

There was one in the Herald Sun yesterday 502 to 7 points. Roger James kicked 23 goals in the game.

An NTFL result a few years ago read:

Burnie 50.29 (329)
Smithton 1.1 (7)

I went to a Northern Bombers match in the same season, we were walking out as the final siren sounded... a Smithton player marked just before and goaled just after the siren

N.Bombers 31.13 (197)
Smithton 1.8 (14)
