Yes, AFL and Cricket are two sports that can see a huge disparity in scores from match to match. If you compare it with Basketball, Ice Hockey and Soccer (where the scores are relatively similar each match), it does make you think what a strange Sport AFL can be at times.

Best thing about our sport that we haven't copied from the States is that we count percentage, therefore teams are encourage to not only put their foot on their opposition's throat, but if they want prime spot for the finals, they crush them.

The anti-"running up the score" mentality in the USA is nauseating.

Port Adelaide missed out by one behind in kicking the same total in both the first and second quarters in three successive rounds. In Round 7 Port scored 5.3 in the first and second quarters versus GWS. In Round 8 they scored 2.4 in the first and second quarters versus Fremantle. This round versus Hawthorn (after having a bye) they scored 4.2 in the first quarter and then 4.1 in the second. Immediately before all this, in Round 6, they also scored 4.2 in the first quarter and then 4.1 in the second, versus Geelong.

Couldn't agree more. The paradox of the showboating and trash talk of the NBA in particular with the feigned indignation at a player scoring a basket in the last 15 seconds of a game already decided is really odd to say the least. The Pacers/Nuggets clash and the Nuggets/Knicks fights in the mid-late 00's were all about someone getting a late bucket, even if it's to get a stat like a triple double. Yet goodness knows what else is said on court (and the behaviors off court) which tend to go bye the bye. It's like it's the biggest insult in the world to get a cheap basket late in the game.

Having played fantasy NBA for years (which i enjoy greatly by the way), i've had many an argument with US based fans who roil at my ideas around this, and feel it is the height of un-sportsman like conduct.

Just seeing the Rich/Ess game this weekend, save for a rogue extra behind scored in the 3rd quarter by the Tigers, the behind tallies for each team would have been respectively 2,4,7 and 11 each of two. Has there ever been a game where the behind tallies of each side had been identical at all four changes?

There have been two, both of them since Waverley was closed:
  1. Round 6, 2000, between Sydney and Richmond at the SCG, where the behind tallies of each side were 4, 6, 9 and 10 at each change. Richmond won the match by a goal through kicking five goals to one in the third quarter.
  2. Round 22, 2009, between Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs at Docklands. The behind tallies were 3, 7, 12 and 16 at each change. In this case, both teams scored 3-3 (21) in the first quarter and 4-5 (29) in the third. The Bulldogs kicked four goals to two in the second quarter and three goals to one in the final quarter, thus winning by 24 points.

There have been 9 matches where the goal tallies were the same each quarter.

R5 1899 Geelong vs Essendon
R18 1922 Collingwood vs Essendon
R10 1934 Hawthorn vs Nth Melbourne
R15 1944 Melbourne vs Geelong
R13 1960 Melbourne vs St Kilda
R4 1973 Fitzroy vs Melbourne
EF 1980 Collingwood vs Nth Melbourne
R4 2000 Sydney vs Collingwood
R16 2004 Carlton vs Nth Melbourne

None were draws.
Margins ranged from 4 points to 13 points.
15 was the highest goal score.

The existence or non-existence of Waverley seems to not
be a significant factor in the distribution of this phenomenon.

In Friday's qualifying final, a behind to Luke Breust at 15:55 in the fourth quarter made the scores Hawthorn 11.11 (77) to Geelong 9.7 (61).
In Saturday's qualifying final, a goal to David Mundy at 10:07 in the fourth quarter made the scores Sydney 11.11 (77) to Fremantle 9.7 (61).

Gee, the odds of that would have to be pretty remote!

Port had 8 blokes in their team who scored 2 or more goals in their last game and one of those blokes scored 3 goals. Is that anywhere near the record.

Here's a bizarre game played between St Kilda & Fitzroy at the Junction Oval in Round 16 1947:

Fitzroy 5.7 7.8 10.17 10.17-77
St Kilda 0.0 3.3 3.3 9.9-63

Besides the amazing symmetry by the Saints, they tripled their own 3/4 time score in the final term while keeping the Lions scoreless, but were too far behind to bring up their second win of the season.

17.25 to one end, 2.1 to the other (including three scoreless quarters). I know where I'd rather be seated. Meanwhile around the grounds only Punt Rd seemed affected by wind at all. At Princes Park, Essendon led Carlton 1.5 to 1.4 at quarter time, scores were level at the other breaks (4.8, 7.10) and the Bombers romped away to a 40 point win.

Good one.

Would be interesting to look up (it's probably already done here somewhere) the games with the highest differential/proportion of scores to one end.

This one comes to mind for me within memory:

Goals to one end in the second term only. In total 3.3 to one end, 17.14 to the other.

The Western Oval with its cold wind and rain produced some interesting scorelines over the years, perhaps none more odd than a match between the Bulldogs and Lions in Round 10 1964:

Footscray 0.0 7.5 8.5 14.9-93 d. Fitzroy 3.3 3.3 13.6 13.7-85

1.1 to one end (1.0 to the Dogs, 0.1 to the Lions) and 26.15 to the other end.

Here's another odd Western Oval game, played by the Bulldogs and Kangaroos in Round 2 1961:

Footscray 1.4 5.13 6.15 13.19-97 d. North Melbourne 4.2 4.2 8.4 8.4-52

North Melbourne's scoring pattern - 4.2 in the first and third quarters, 0.0 in the others - is quite strange - I don't think I've seen too many games like that.

Did Essendon and South Melbourne play this Round 16 1936 game at Windy Hill in a cyclone?

South Melbourne 2.12 3.14 8.27 11.30-96 d. Essendon 0.0 3.6 5.6 12.16

Interestingly in a game of such shocking inaccuracy, Essendon did not score a behind in the third term.
