A great find by our recruiters and congratulations to Anthony. It is another example of the benefit of late developing kids playing that extra year in the NAB competition. In previous times they may have been lost to the AFL, I wonder if its worth the AFL considering having more 19 year olds remain on NAB lists.

Lets face it, we are one of the few sport that draft highly underdeveloped kids. A bit more developed nowadays however sports like NFL dont draft until the players are about 23, even NRL they are usually out of the under 20's.

I am sure many are lost to football.

It really does need a refresh.

I personally believe minimum draft age should be 19. Gives the late bloomers an extra year to develop and would probably put more of an interest into state league footy like VFL.

It also gives teams drafting a better understanding of whether the kid will be able to develop at the highest level.

Just have to look at some of our best players who were overlooked in their draft year.
Sinclair 19
Marshall 21
Wilkie 22

All taken as mature ager's.

Then you have the likes of Tom Stewart, Tim Kelly etc who are guns but drafted in their early 20's.

Its the clubs , not the AFL.
Young kid tracking well for draft, something goes wrong....**** missed the boat.
Why not keep an eye on those types? They can't seem to take their eyes of 18yo's in the NAB league.

They carry on like taking a 1 year rookie on bottom pay is the biggest risk they'll ever take. Then flippantly trade early draft picks.

An interview about Hammer on Whateley SEN this morning. Seems like he had a bit of growing up to do but has a few physical attributes to potentially make it

Yeah wouldn't read too much into the maturity bit, the kid is 19. Now in an AFL environment he will mature or will be out on his behind quick smart.

I would listen to the old coach and take heed about his 'flashes' of brilliance. I was at training on Friday, and his performance, as I said at the time, did his chances no harm whatsoever. However the underlying meaning from the old coach is that he needs consistency.
The other thing to take heed is he will take a couple of preseasons to fill out, He is a good size, but is underdeveloped in the upper body, as are most 19 year olds.

As for the contract waiting for him. Don't buy into the hype from the likes of David King, his match sim was as good as you could hope for, but the word was that Carlton was looking to pounce, so I think if we had a couple of ore weeks we may have held off.

Still it is a good news story, and as I said the kid looked like a natural footballer. Under Ross he now has the opportunity to work hard and become a valuable AFL footballer.

He sounds a bit like he's not wanting to blow the kids trumpet too much, given that he's gone to an opposition team.

I’d hate to see guys like Daicos and Rowell not given the opportunity to have an impact at 18

Yes there are kids that just aren’t ready for afl footy at 18, but unlike 10 years ago there are many more avenues to getting onto an AFL list later in life including the SSP and mid season drafts

Not sure what the stats are but I’d imagine we see more mature players taken now than anytime since the draft was introduced.
