Sheed is the sort of player who was never athletically gifted so was always in danger of losing a step with age and injury... unfortunately for the poor bloke both have hit him like a tonne of bricks.

He was never quick and the game has changed lots, especially since the start of this decade. He would be lucky to get drafted this year if 18 year old him was entering the draft imo. Same with Gaff, cant afford non explosive midfielders even if they can kick alright these days

The one midfielder Mitchell rated as the smartest midfielder on our list. If you don't know how to utilize and capitalize on players strengths and continually set them up for failure, that's a HC weakness.

What is Sheed? Like 2018 is 6 years, a lot of injuries, and some rule changes ago.
In 2025 what role could he play?

There's so many roles, variations and positioning in modern footy it does also depend on the collective buy in and sacrifice.
That aside, if you want to see the way to utilize his strengths, then watch the last 2 minutes of the 2018 grand final and that is enough.
Don't even look at his smart positioning and goal everyone talks about and remembers. Look at the following center bounce and just watch Sheed and what he does. The hand in, 2 on one win against Penders and Grundy. The following interference run that defeats Penders influence again and allows the Vards/Crippa clearance.The instant gut run, at the end of a flat out grand final, having just kicked the defining impossible goal, to the perfect spot yet again, which unfortunately Josh missed. The pressured gather and handball to Luke, followed by Jacks infamous goal-square moment.
Most average punters and commentators don't even know who got the ball to Luke for his goal in that G/F as an aside.
His brain and thinking in the moment, is elite and coaches like Mitchell know it. He is a first drop, smart run forward gun, with elite fitness, brain, footy smarts and near elite left foot who's a big game player. If you can't work out how to use that in your setup, it's your weakness. If you continue to assign roles and positioning, not just to one player, but multiple players that don't harness their strengths, you also cause indecision and loss of confidence. That is death at AFL level

If he stays on next year, he can do a Gaff and play a farewell game at the end of the year if we're not contending.
