Love this kid.

Uncompromising, team orientated, disciplined.

Good pick from the Simpson era. Hopefully will become a great pick up.

He's shown as much as (if not more than) Darling and Gaff did in their first two games.

Great pick up. Hopefully can be given a rest in the next few weeks with Ellis coming back from injury. Don't want to burn the kid out too early.

Yep, really really like the look of this guy and should end up a reliable small/medium defender at worst, which is still a win for pick 51.

If he can add to the midfield rotations in future he will be even handier. Good job recruiters.

Nelson reminds me of Sam Mitchell early in his career playing half back and back flank on smaller players while building and offensive side of his game.
Low centre of gravity, good on both sides and full of footy smarts.

He's a proper old school footy player quite like McGovern is.
Still very early and he still has to build size and a bit more speed. Could be a great pick up and long term player.

Didn't think Nelson would impact this well this early given where we were as a squad in the preseason, but injuries have offered an opportunity and he's taking it. I really rated the kid (top 20-25), and as I said previously, was really hoping he fell to our pick 32. Given he was AIS and such a good size was very surprised he wasn't getting any love pre-draft. His performance hasn't surprised me, the guy is just a smart footballer, never tries to do too much, plays composed, and has fantastic disposal skills (I rated him over Viojo-Rainbow). He really struck me as a zero weakness guy. I thought he could develop into a Bluey McKenna HBF, but he definitely has midfield potential, so it'll be interesting to see how he develops.

I wonder how many pick 51's have played the first two games after they were drafted?

I'm hoping Nelson's confidence continues to grow. I like that he went for a canter and kicked that i50. He has gone for a jog a couple of times and then handballed a team-mate into trouble - probably just needs to back himself more to make that next disposal down the line, he is a good kick.

Nick Holma, Dylan Van Unen, Nathan Blee, Dean McDonald, Troy Taylor. Not an inspiring bunch of names for the pick 51's in the last draft before Nelson.

I'm amazed at how composed this guy is. He'll get more and more confident as time goes on with his kicking and backing himself, but he looks good. Sam Butler must be annoyed because he looks to be a future HBF/midfielder. Pretty happy to have picked Nelson up in the player sponsor draft!

He has probably pushed the good old Buts out of the team. On current form Nelson is best 22 but when Ellis returns it will be interesting. Happy to see him playing diwn back but in the coming years will be a solid midfield rotation.

Actually seems more like Ellis to me than Butler (perhaps not as good a contest/high mark though). Loved having Ellis in the team last year and if Nelson can bring more of the same every week I think we can definitely benefit from having two of that type of player.

First post really sums it up:

2 games in, already in the top half of our team for poise & composure, really good skills and seems at ease at AFL level. Definitely a steal.

Will be tested next week but I think he has the goods.

Well he won't / shouldn't take Walters and is well suited to manning up on a Main / resting Barlow / Mundy sized mid.

If he thought the AFL was at a higher speed and intensity level after two games it will be interesting to hear him after his first Derby experience.

You obviously don't really know much about Sam Butler then.

He's a team first man and won Best Club Man in 2014. He copped a slight strain and wasn't available to be selected. He knows Nelson won't play 22 games as he would have known he himself wouldn't be playing 22 games in 2015.

Saying that I'm sure that both Sam and I are more than happy to have picked up Nelson with pick 51. If Nelson can follow say a Waterman career path and also play with impact rotating through the midfield as well everyone will be very happy..........including Sammy Butler.:thumbsu:

Given Butler's injury history, how long due you think Butler has left? This season or until the end of next year?

I think this will be his last season. We are overdue to land a trade or free agent and will need to free up the cap space. We have Nelson looking pretty good plus Ellis, Adams and Brophy all there as depth to cover Butler.

Waters + Butler + Hill + McGinnity = Rance / Yarran or a Bennell.:thumbsu:

The point still stands though, Butler won't be annoyed by being passed by a young gun. He is a team player and is grateful for what the club has done for him and what he has achieved with it over the journey.

Don't you think we need a midfielder more than a rebounding half-back?

Harley Bennell is a pretty decent midfielder isn't he?

Yarren across half back can play mid and also releases Yeo into the midfield.

We need good ball users with pace, Yarran or Bennell would add that.

Rance as a free agent you just wouldn't pass up. He would free up McGovern to play forward and swing back. Would also allow us to pick an extra mid / runner instead of a tall and also allow the rucks to rest on the bench and add another runner onto the ground.

It's hard to attract quality West so you grab what you can.

Big fan, think he'll shore up our HBF stocks. Was a fan of picking him at 32, stoked we got him at 51.

Congrats to Jackson on 8 years and 100+ games. Fantastic clubman and servant of the club. Always thought that opportunity never quite went your way. Good luck in the future!

The fawning over Nelson in this thread after he had played 2 games is probably a warning to stop putting so much expectation on young guys in their first season as he went from this to the board whipping boy. It is impossible to forecast the next 10 years of a player's career.

See: Hough praise and Williams hate.

Who ****ing asked you?

:)

First post after a long time reader.

I'm fuming at this decision. He will go elsewhere and became a good inside midfielder. We ruined him
