I'm too young to really remember how the early 2000s Ken Judge trade ins went....

Mark Merenda, Matt Prior, David Sierakowski, Richard Taylor, Damien Adkins, Trent Carroll...

I've seen Merenda's GOTY but otherwise it appears to be a dud bunch that came over.

Micheal Collica was decent. Sierakowski was decent when he could get on the park which wasn't often. The rest were average.

Merenda had talent, but his bad back ultimately got the better of him

Wellingham stuffed up with his dumb injury, but his performance on field in his first season for WCE was pretty good IMO. Was fairly impactful and hit the scoreboard a bit from his 10 games.

Got progresively worse in 2014 before his random resergence in our undersized defence in 2015.

New recruits having poor first seasons is generally a trend with us though, unless you're Mitchell and Petrie 😍

Getting M.Flynn is a very good move.

Getting him for free is exceptional.

Flynn is a player I have admired since his 2021 season at the Giants where he averaged inside the top 10 in the competition for contested marks.

Is a more classical body-on-body type of ruck who will be outreached by more athletic opponents, but wins a high percentage of his taps to advantage because he positions his frame well and has soft hands.

What perhaps excites me most his his defensive background, playing most of his junior football at CHB, and he still has that ability to sit behind play and read where the ball is going.

Has all the traits to facilitate the role of the additional marking tall behind play as B.Williams takes ruck duties when possession is deep forward.

Spent the second half of the 2023 season in the VFL as a result of the rise of K.Briggs, sharing the ruck with B.Pruess and N.Madden in an odd three-way rotation. Despite the constant role turnover, he still averaged over 20 hit outs and 2.5 goals a game for the VFL Giants.

In 2023, the biggest deficiency for West Coast was around stoppage. Acquiring Flynn will improve that.

Due to injury and competition for places, he has never played more than 12 games in a season. If he stays healthy, gains a succession of appearances and gets his confidence up, I feel Flynn still has the potential to improve dramatically upon what he has been able to briefly show so far at top level.

Basketball background also.

A very tidy piece of business done by the club.

Welcome to West Coast, Matt.

Here's hoping the opportunity that you've been after to make a senior position your own pays off well for both you and the Eagles.

brent rambo thumbs up GIF

we should def be offering any half decent Ruckman an over the top contract to come, this is detrimental to our kid's development.

When I see Flynn trying to mark it reminds me of an old team mate of mine by that I mean he just puts his arms up in hope. It's not an actual marking attempt it's just an attempt at a contest. In his mind he doesn't think he can mark it but by putting his arms up he hopes the ball might hit them and then ricochet down to a player on our side and we win possession. Like if you watch him closely you can see in his mind that he has no thought that he's going to mark it just throw the arms up and hope the ball hits them. Yes sometimes he actually sticks one after 2 or 3 fumbles but that was unexpected and not his intention.

Just watch his marking contests closely he isn't actually trying to mark the ball he just puts his arms up as like a barrier to stop the ball and then whatever happens after that is in gods hands.

I guess we've all said things on the internet we aren"t proud of.

To be fair - I was happy to recall him after he got absolutely destroyed by Witts in round 1 on the basis that he had not been given a consistent run leading the ruck and the knowledge that Williams was not a viable #1 and had been given plenty of opportunities to prove otherwise.

I can now confidently confirm that Matt Flynn ain't it. He has clunked a couple of good marks but I honestly don't know if I have ever wanted to ball in anyone's hands less than this guy. Sorry Matt, I am sure you are a great guy.

We should have convinced Scott Lycett to come back and go around for another couple of years.

I have no idea how he's gone so far backwards in such a short time.

Slyce's body was cooked though. Just couldn't do it anymore

I audibly groan whenever Matt Flynn kicks the ball, before even seeing where it's going. It floats, it swerves, it sits up there for an eternity. I'm sure he's a legend of a bloke but holy shit, have we ever had a worse ruckman in our history get consistent games?

Watching him get up off the floor is like watching my pop get out of his chair. It takes a long time, there is lots of holding onto to things and i reckon all sorts of grunts and groans.

Maybe even a stray fart or 2.

He just doesn't have that dog in him. Seems like some nice guy you'd see in accounting.

He is a decent mark around the ground though I'll give him that.
