X factor has nothing to do with footy intelligence

Brett Burton case in point

Douglas career is built on being footy smart, he's not an elite athlete like Gooch. He's proven he's footy smart by being able to play multiple roles , sometimes within the 1 game eg mid , forward , tagger , back

He's also been a better than average score involvement , score assist and goal kicker which takes footy smarts

Gooch X factor comes from his athleticism , speed , vertical leap etc . His footy IQ is what needs work and is why he didn't find much ball in sanfl last year or AFL to this year . I'm talking >20 possession games , they've been very rare both years
X-factor does usually require it (I will give you Burton however). I would equally say most of Goochs flashes where he has shown this haven't been primarily through athleticism either. Most of them have either been vision and instinct based (his snaps against Sydney, and Richmond, and that ridiculous pass against GC as prime examples).

I would equally argue playing multiple roles doesn't exactly prove someone to be "footy smart". For example, the difference between a half forward, winger and a half back is minimal at the best of times (which is what Dougy has switched between). Douglas does however switch to a more inside role at times so he does that, but odds are Gallucci will also develop that in time to survive/thrive at this level.

To use your metrics, which is Douglas career averages per game being the defining factor for better than average: Gallucci is also currently better than average in goal kicking (seeing 0.7 goals per game = Douglas career average), 0.07 goal assists off being better than average and 2.3 score involvements off (though admittedly, this is in part due to this statistic coming into fruition during Douglas best years of football and are expected to be inflated). None of them are really doing much damage to Goochs claim here, especially seeing he's doing that on 11.5 disposal average (compared to an 18.4 disposal average for Doughy). I also feel it's a decently fair comparison seeing Douglas has always gotten a good amount of forward minutes (and rarely played behind the ball).

I'm also very interested in your definition of very rare, seeing Gooch hit 20+ disposals 4 times in 12 attempts at SANFL (discounting two games for injuries). 33.3% is not bad strike rate for a first year, non inside player (seeing accumulation is tied into being inside strong, especially in the mess that is our SANFL set up). Douglas had a much better strike rate than this at SANFL level, and to show you how meaningless it all proved to be; it took Douglas 42 games to knock up his first 20+ game at AFL level. Gooch took 3. Not only that, it would take until Douglas's third season of AFL (going into that season, Doughy had played 16 games) to average more disposals then what Gallucci is now. I would add both didn't play a role at this time where you could even remotely expect a 20+ disposal game, seeing both started as primarily a small forward. To sum up the rarity of a 20 disposal game in this position, Eddie who will end up going down as one of the all time greats, has only done it 8 times. To use that as a metric would be the equivalent of saying a KPD is **** because he doesn't kick goals.

Comparing development: Gooch is one year ahead of Douglas in how they developed (i.e. what Gooch is doing now, took Douglas an extra season to do) so it's a fair assumption to think he'll end up better than, especially in a lot of football smart areas seeing Gallucci's moments have truly shown he is a very intelligent player with the ball in hand.

Dougie is a property mongol.

He actually spoke to my mate last year when he was selling one of his Adelaide properties. Told my mate he was selling because he was going back to Vic next year (this year).

Dougie has a very dry sense of humour though so was prob trolling my mate.

There's been a bit of mention of Gooch in the Kornes and Rucci thread, which I think is most inappropriate and insulting to the Gooch :) So let's bump this one.

I've been mightily impressed with Gooch this year. He started out a bit like 2017 Milera: The game seemed to go over and around him, and he didn't get enough of it. That started to change later in the year, and I hope/expect that, like Milera 2018, Gooch will see more of the ball in 2019.

Two things I like:
1. He's a decent mark for his size, and capable of making a good contest in the air (like Milera 2018 version).
2. He's a smart decision maker.
3. <Monty Python> Three - three things I like: He's a good kick. Not silk class, but a smart kick and capable of hitting a target from out of a pack / difficult angle / off one step. This is something I've always liked about Douglas, and I think Gooch has it too. Kicking style very similar.

If he can carve out a Douglas type career he will be a whopping boy, but a pretty handy player. Very similar draft pick too, Douglas being a few later.
Oh I don't think he'll be that big :)

I think he's capable of being better than Douglas. I think Douglas gets a bit hard done by on this board, but I will allow that "better than Douglas" is what we should hope for.

Sneaky edit.

But he does have a few things in his favour, particularly a far greater athletic ability.

Showing plenty and I was a bit dubious

The only thing that worries me is ball finding ability - can he win 25 possessions in his best games ?

If he can average 20+ will be a very handy player

I think that's where 2017 Milera vs 2018 comes in. I think / hope Gooch will do the same.

Agreed. Needs to get more involved but that will come with time.

4. Courageous for his size

Douglas Mk2?

Outside leaning mid IMO
Not sure that spot will be available and also think he adds something at the contest . I think he will be a high forward that pushes into the middle a bit

Most of his mid time currently is floating through off back of square but that may not be available in rules next year with 6-6-6!

The Gooch seems to lift when the game is on the line, something I’m not sure Dougie does. We need more players like that.

Hopefully, next year he can start accumulating a bit more of the ball and have games where he gets 20+ possessions.

Would like to see Gallucci given most of this week running off a wing. Great opportunity to give him more opportunities around the ball, to give him an idea of what he needs to work on over the pre-season.

Don't bury him up forward this week, with the occasional run off the back of the square.

Release the Gooch.

Has very good clutch goal kicking potential. Just seems to nail the half chances at important times. This to me demonstrates the presence of elite composure in high pressure situations.

It obviously doesn't happen enough yet, but I like the signs that I've seen.

We will see what we invested in next year I think.

I've enjoyed his season and think he's one of the positives to take out of a bad year.

I do agree to free him up this week. Carlton aren't AFL standard so he should stand well to have increased output if given the opportunity.

Give him something to ponder over the off season.

The other thing is settling him down in the one spot, which we haven't done just yet.
They don't do that in the modern game.

They like to play the.kids in different positions. Give them a taste of different roles. They find alot about the players mental and phyiscal limits. Then they work on them in the pre season.

What I saw on Sunday was and unsociable style of play. Found the energy to physiicaly confront opponants after thier disposal.

Looks like a 200 gamer developing. Will play with crouch junior for years.
