Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

Haha duno about that, unless Woodhouse has some sort of lucky charm that allowed him to slip to us ;) (Actually wouldn't surprise me, we've been mighty lucky with sliders in the draft)

Seriously I'm so stoked with this. I had the phantom draft up while I was watching the draft to see who was sliding. When it got to about pick 30 and Smith was still available I started getting very excited. He is exactly what we need.

Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

Can't say I'd heard of this guy.

Is he a good get?
Yep, was tipped to go between 14 and 22. Great pace (fastest non-indigenous time in the history of the DC) and a big booming kick. Natural mover with a good sidestep. Looks pretty well built which is a good sign for his pace, so it won't have to be sacrificed. Runs with the ball and backs himself. A steal at 36 imo.

Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

Without sounding too much like a recruiter, Smith was one I wanted pre-draft because of his speed. I didn't think we would be too hot on him though, only because we're always difficult when we draft (i.e. no crumbers).

Looks like an awesome player though.

Interestingly, we took a lot of athletes in this draft. Looking at draft camp:

Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

When he's running through the middle he reminds me a bit of Dale Thomas.

Excited about this guy.

Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

According to Woodhouse we wanted Jamie Bennell at 36, but Melbourne swooped and took him at 35. We rated him VERY highly. However, he said that they had Smith a lot higher as well, so were happy to grab him..

Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

:thumbsu:Very happy with what this guy has shown.

Plays alot like Hodge and Wojinski. Fast rebounding back pocket / HBF. Good size and kicks well with penatration.

Could well be the small backpocket we've been needing

Oh and nickname......Flash!! Always good to have Flash on the team

Woody actually said:

Trevor Woodhouse, West Coast Eagles
“We came here with an intent to get good players and that was really the bottom line. All these kids are talented, and we had a bit of a focus on some midfield guys with some pace. We've certainly added some pace to the group, but they've still got to get hold of the footy.

“We're overall pretty happy, but everybody is at this time of year. Ask me again in a couple of years – if I'm not sitting here, then I wasn't.”

Re: Welcome Pick 36- Ashley Smith

The good thing about Smith like Schuey & Swift is that they are very hard to tackle and have a natural aggression about them - watch their highlight clips. Add to that that all of them (& Nat) can all run sub 2.92secs is awesome.

Shuey and Smith are good mates as well so that's going to be handy for them to settle in. I'm pretty sure Smith would know Will Sullivan as well from last year.

I rekon Melbourne pipped us with a couple of picks, 17 & 35. We dont have a wooden coloured spoon though, which is good.

Great kick on him! In those clips theres a couple of impressive pinpoint I50s that he launches effortlessly from the back of the centre square!
