Pick 47 – Melbourne: Kurt Mutimer – SD/OM (185 cm, 82 kg, Dandenong Stingrays)

Another I really like, Mutimer's another player who hurts the opposition by both running and kicking. Having played more in defence, he's one who may move to the wing with time. His kicking is very solid, with penetration and range, and he's deceptively quick. For mine, he's one who's fallen under the radar with so many guns in the Country and Dandenong teams.

Medium midfielder

AFL biography: Left footed medium midfielder who is a penetrating kick, is strong overhead and has good natural pace. Important player of Victoria Country Championship winning team, averaging 15 possessions. Had excellent season with Stingrays, averaging 22 possessions (11 contested), 5 tackles and 4.5 clearances.

"We always knew Kurt had talent, but as a 17 year old he got a few little injuries that didn't help him. He wanted to jump straight onto the scene, so he played hurt a few times. He's a really elite runner, and a good user on the left. He tried to change his game on the eve of the finals and run and carry a bit more - I think a few AFL clubs got into his ear which didn't help - but he proved when he played nationals that he could play in multiple positions, as an outsider and an insider. I reckon he's a half-back flanker in the AFL system because he uses the ball so well and can cover so much ground. Back in November you could tell he'd started to change his body shape and was working hard. By the time we got to February we knew he really wanted it because he was ticking every single box."

I have an irrational like for Mutimer ever since I read a profile about him and it sounded good. He became my boy for no good reason so I was happy to find that we were linked to him and that we drafted him.

Now he just has to dominate. Easy.
