I hated his selection, but giving it more thoughts, it makes sense. He'll be a insurance, doubt he'll play many games, but will be good around the club, good for the young blokes, and especially considering the lack of experience down back, we made the right choice.

I understand the dislike for him, I was on the same boat, but let's cut him some slack, he probably didn't expect this like us, but he'll be good for this season. We complained we didn't have a stopper apart from Brown, now we get 3 with Brown, Rowe and Joyce.

Let's show him some love, hes part of the family. Its the minimum we can do, during this tough time.

LET'S GO SAINTS!!!

Sam was coached by Brett Ratten which could explain why he was targeted. He has also had to endure more adversity than most players, having been diagnosed with testicular cancer at 24 yo and having to undergo surgery and chemotherapy. He is a great example of resilience and from all accounts has leadership qualities.IMO he will add depth to the Sandy stocks and they desperately need more on field leadership to help bring the next generation of players through.

No problems what so ever with this selection. Its clearly to fill a glaring short term deficiency in relation to an experienced big defender.

With Carlisle essentially gone for the year, the need was clearly exposed with the carry over suspension of Brown. Throw in Robbo's unfortunate situation and that meant the only choices we have for the GCS game for "tall" backline spots are

Joyce - 194 cm 2 games

Callum Wilkie 191 cm - 0 games

Josh Battle - 194 cm - zero AFL games as a defender.

Jon Marsh 194cm - 0 AFL games for the past few years and been at the club for 14 seconds.

Anybody who reckons that a ideal situation even for one week knows very little about footy, let alone what would happen if Brown copped a longer term injury during the season.

I doubt we will ever see Brown and Rowe play in the same team but his selection was like house insurance - a necessity.

Yeah I don't think the trepidation is required, after all it's not like you can just trade for a currently established defender to fill voids that occur because random health scares.

Shit happens and time will tell if we did diligence or blinked with these appointments, but in the very least, 2 blokes get another chance for a year which is only a good thing.

Looking at our list it's a smart move, without Robbo or Carlisle and with Brown's age we had to get in a defender with size. A great depth choice and if he establishes himself it's either because he's lifted his game or we really do suck that much.

We lack older mature leaders as well, it's good to have a guy who has qualities that we lack. I just fail to see what the problem is. Even if he doesn't play much he's good back up.

Not a bad selection considering we will now be without both Carlisle and Roberton this year, he's a solid key defender that can swing forward as well.

I doubt he will be in our starting line up for Rd1 but he will be good depth cover at least.
