Welcome to Freo: Stefan Giro

I can’t believe how clean Giro is. Every time he touches the ball he hit a teammate and things just seem to work out.

His pressure is also insane. Just he’s too small so often bounces off players. Have also noticed he’s right in there head over the ball in many scrimmages but does easily get shifted.

Not a bad thing. Just needs to build some core strength and he will be a 25 touches a game player easily.

Yep. Plenty to work with. Should see out the majority of the year

This is why guys like Giro slip in the draft. No matter how much work he does, he's always going to be at a 10kg disadvantage to most other players in the AFL because of his height. There's only so much lifting and eating you do before you start to lose the agility that made you a good player to begin with.

So he's never going to be as strong a tackler as someone like Banfield or Brayshaw.

Not everyone needs to be a tackling beast though. Lachie Neale is a terrible tackler too, but makes up for it in other ways.

Core strength can be increased without adding weight

Agree. His pressure is already immense and I’m sure Freo do their reviews but the amount of times he forces the opposition into a rushed disposal is great to see.

His body will naturally develop and a few more kilos won’t harm.

Has a good sense of what’s around him so could easily find a place in our front half.

He'll always be challenged for height and ability to stop a 90kg bull running through him, in the same way Caleb Daniel is.

He'll make up for it in speed and agility. I'd rather we have a mix of different types in our midfield allowing us to mix it up - like where we have Fyfe, Blakely, Neale at one centre bounce - then Matera, Giro, Walters in at another.

Caleb was grabbing at the wrong 'limb'. There's only one way to bring down a giant like that when you're that short.

There was a game against us where Caleb went for the tackle and basically bounced off. Can't recall who he was trying to tackle though. Remember laughing at the time. Was it Sandi? Kinda looked like he went to hug him

Sandi does that to most, even the big boys. Did you see Sandi put Cripps on his hole in the first minute of play?

With Giro and Crowden, it probably helped that both of the Adelaide clubs were looking to top up with trades and experienced mature age players which only left them limited late picks for their local talent.

SA didn't do too badly in the U 18's. They lost to WA by a point in Perth and finished with 2 wins and Vic Metro and WA had 3 wins with Vic Metro comfortably beating WA. Some of the reports out of WA make it seem like we were the dominant state.

WA were clearly 2nd best. Metro lost to the allies because they took them lightly. Everyone else looked a class below Metro. They absolutely belted SA.

The gap between the WA and SA teams seems marginal given the head-to-head result and that WA played 3 games in Perth whereas SA only played one at home. Bit of home town hype I heard, mostly centered around Sumich's coaching credentials, went as far as suggesting WA won the National Championship.

General point being that a footballing state like SA should be able to throw up a handful of AFL quality players each year from their Under 18's side and that Freo basically drafted the best two SA mids from the U18's with late picks and that was probably helped by the Crows and Power focus for the draft being on other types.

Pre-draft, the Crows had picked up Gibbs and were looking to fill the gaps left by Cameron, B.Smith, Lever and Port had Rockliff as their major midfield addition.

SA U18's players From the draft:
12 Fogarty, 20 Coleman-Jones, 37 Petty, 40 McPherson*, 42 Ballard, 49 Houlahan, 59 Crowden, 21R Giro, 38R Murphy, 41R Edwards

Ballard, Crowden and Giro being the midfielders on that list. (Ballard drafted as 195cm winger type at draft.) *McPherson (half back/mid) missed 2017 but represented SA in 2016.

Yeah probably not a lot in it but I was more impressed by WA.

Very impressed by the level of his awareness in traffic to take the right option. While other players go the bomb into the forward line the little souvlaki just spots up a short option like he did for Matera, Mundy or Cox(?). As a winger or half forward flanker he has serious potential for us, cannot believe a player that good was a rookie pick because no amount of training can teach that awareness.

Rookie draftees are not supposed to have the cleanliness and vision Giro has. I don't know how this happened, but we'll take it.

Maybe Champion Data for the draftees was a more accurate reflection on where he sits.

And I can’t say I rate Champion Data much.

It’s a massive credit to our talent scouts and recruiters to identify a talent like this in the rookie draft and it’s a credit to Stefan, and I could be generalising here, but a lot of rookie listed player’s that are hell bent on not giving up the chance to get on an AFL list. IMO they show more hunger and it’s already built in them to go the extra mile to prove they have what it takes. We have a pretty good records turning rookie’s into consistent first team players over the years.

Actually one of the youth that lowers their eyes and hit up the pass perfectly. He doesn't rush, nor feels like he is pressured. Mundy-like
Feel like he's an upgrade on Crowden. Can the two be in the side at the same time though?
