The whole passage was setup by our future midfield

Reeves with the massive hitout to advantage.
Duke with the attack on the ball
Ward with the beautiful collect
MacDonald with the sizzling kick into 50

Not too sure if it's been mentioned already but Jed Bews (#24) is out with a shoulder this week. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first clash of the game with Newcombe where he hurt it. Bews must've had a death wish trying to clean up Newk who's clearly made of concrete.

Edit: I see Bews played today

It’s amazing how relaxed he looks in those big hits and tackles, he just rolls through it like it’s nothing

Not a lot of game time and not a lot of the ball but something good seems to always happen when he has ball in hand. Might be a deft little handball to release someone into space or getting on the end of a goal. Clean, one touch and good disposal.

Will have much better understanding of where he is at after 50 games.

Couple.of moments today he would like again.

Connor Macdonald (20 disposals, 4 marks, 9 tackles)

“CMac played his first VFL game and this allowed him to play some inside mid time. It was great to see him get to work in there. He probably spent the first quarter getting used to the speed of the game, but after that he really got going. He laid nine tackles round the contest and then looked really dangerous when he went forward late. He was a big part of us getting the win. He had some great moments late in the game to get us some goals back in the game.”

Good to see that he was able to step down, get good midfield minutes and put in a strong performance. Give him a few weeks to see if he can dominate in the middle at that level and get him back into the seniors I reckon. All positive signs that he's going to be too good for VFL very soon.

"...getting used to the speed of the game"

Liiiike, he needed to adjust to a slower pace game of football?

Actually yeah. His first two possessions were rushed scrambled disposals "hot potato".

After that he realised he had that extra fraction of a second and started to show his usual composure.

Still played mostly as a "link" player (ie Morrison - run to receive, pause, dispose) with ball in hand rather than creating (Day/Impey/CJ - receive, run, dispose) though.

Found a lot of space simply through holding his width and reading the play.

He got pushed around in the middle of the ground wasn't clean in the middle and looked rushed. Its only when he went forward a role he has been playing at AFL level did he have a great impact

This is definitely a thing.

Forget the doubters, our current crop of young midfielders are likely going to be elite. McDonald along with Ward, Newcombe, Butler and whoever we add this year with a very early pick are going to blossom with a few pre-seasons and games under their belts.

On that note, Reeves hasn't played 20 games yet, and his development will make them better as well.

Sam Mitchell has said pretty clearly that he'd rather develop a wining team and suffer some short term pain to achieve that goal, instead of producing a team that will scrape into the 8 each year but never challenge.

McDonald is a big part of this plan. He's smooth, clean, quick and super smart. He's got some height too. Great to see him in the midfield the last couple of weeks.
