Will never forget his snap in the pocket at Waverley in that final v Geelong same year 91. Sublime. What a player. Imagine him now he was one of the first mids who could kill it up fwd. one of my favs ever.Worked for Darren Jarman.

Him, Johnny Platten and Tony Hall on the same team. Three of the classiest players SA ever produced.
So Ginni is looking fit. That is Great.
I know that I am in a minority camp in thinking the Hawks did not need to trade for Ginni. We already had the next generation of small fwds coming through in Butts, Bennetts and Sully. And the likelihood that Watson would arrive in the draft.
But if Ginni has stepped up to another level, and if Sam has a plan that uses his very impressive skills, then I’ll eat my post.
Unlike other AFL player’s off field issues, to date I don’t have an issue with what Ginni has been reported (that I have seen) to have done. My assessment is not character based, it is based on needs.
I think that there is a fair chance that the Hawks will not need Ginni in the best 22 come round 1 (though I think he will be played for footy political reasons = if he is fit and firing and we traded for him then we play him irrespective of whether Butts should play instead.
Bennetts is a great link player but does not yet have Ginni’s sniff for a goal. Sully has all of the tools but is not realising them… I hope for so much more from him. Butler has had the greatest preseason of any non-22 player that I have seen and surely will be in contention come round 1. And Watson must play (he wants it, we want it, and his style of play means he is unlike to get hurt).
As of today, before the pre-season games… in a choice between Ginni and Butler… it is close.
… which means that we did not need to trade for Ginni.
I’d love to know from the track watches where Ginni finishes in the runs. My guess is that he will never have the stamina to play in the midfield (unlike CMac or Butts).
What is certain is that Ginni has great skills. He is not fast but has a fast mind and is creative… creativity being the primary skill of a fwd.
Time will tell what point Ginni will sit on in a measure from Vickery to Burgoyne.
I hope Ginni becomes important. Let’s see if he has the shoulders to support expectations.

Think he was a bit harshly judged that day. When he was stuck in a forward pocket and you had Dunstall, Brereton, Tony Hall, Paul Hudson and Paul Dear sharing the forward line someone was bound to have a quiet day !Worked for Darren Jarman.

True. But the harshest judge of his performance that day was Jarman himself. It certainly spurred him on in 1997.
Guy McKenna was no mug (Jamie Shannahan) either.

This guy impressed me yesterday looks really fit did quite a bit of work up the ground, and knows where the goals are. Will be a great recruit

Worked really hard to get involved. 14 touches, 5 tackles and 2 goals is a very good return for a small forward. Hopefully he can keep that tenacity up.

His finishing and accuracy when shooting at goal are top notch. I would go as far saying anything within 35m, there is no one else I would have shooting, including Bruest and Gunners

It's so nice to have someone who can finish our good work. So many times we would dominate opposition for patches but we lacked the class in the forward line to capitalise.
Thought he looked great in the game against the dogs. Very happy with this

Only recently 21 too, marvellous signing.
Nobody will ever be Cyril but we are so lucky to be looking at another 10 years of a gun small forward in 33

His 2nd goal was a breath of fresh air. So often we handball it around inside 50 or look for a chip kick often to a contest in the pocket.
To just get it 45 out and just 1 step bang it straight through the middle.
Reminded me a bit of how Birchall would drift forward when we were chipping it around the ark or over possessing and just grab and goal.
If you are a small forward within 40m of goal and time to kick to someone you should just be kicking it through the goals.
I know that the team thing is to centre it etc.. but the choice is specialist goal kicker kicks goal or 1. Attempts pass 2. Other player wins contest to mark or otherwise gain possession 3. Kick goal.

Ginnivan fan here… watching him tonight for the first time as a hawks player
As you are all seeing he has sublime skills and poise on his right side in particular… limited player in some other aspects… but will have a 30 goals plus season this year
