Also helps that they both process things very quickly.

It's a good point you make.

One thing I notice when I'm at the ground, when I'm watching those two, is that there watching where their opponents and their teammates are before they get the ball. So essentially, they already know their options before they even grab the ball, that's why they can process so quickly.

Just quietly. This bloke was very good again last night. Seems to be over any injury that was bothering him.
He and the Wis have really seemed to bond not just off the field but on it to. There was a couple of plays last night where Ginni put him in a dangerous position.

Both of them are so good at kicking it to a teammate's advantage (instead of just to the teammate)

Another fine game from Ginni again last night.

Works his arse off. Short, slow, not strong, 3 goals and possibly BOG in the first half.

Great to see Mitchell has got him into the midfield at times.

A footballer and has a genuine footy brain, I am delighted to see him do well even when hes giving me the irrits.

It's great there's athletes and project players and so on, but you still need footballers and he's that.

Our blokes still love him (after the siren), and I regret the booing. Hope he plays 200 for you.

I appreciate these kinds of posts.
I try to get around Ned Long when I can and hope he has similar success for you all!

He looked at home in the midfield I thought.

Much easier to look like a good player in a team that is strong and playing well. It is when the going gets tough and you then stand up, that is when you earn the respect as a player.

Ginni’s work when it was the hottest, was top notch last night. Pity he had few following.

For a player who is known for his flair I think his work rate is his most underrated trait.

He absolutely busts his ass to get up and down the ground, it's why he gets such high disposal numbers for a forward pocket / half forward flanker.

He was great last night, he took his one week demotion to the VFL in the right spirit which is testament to his character.

His 2 best games for us have been against the Pies, its no coincidence... there's no fear factor playing against your mates. Need to see more of it on a consistent basis, again comes down to belief and he is a confidence player.

This drove me bonkers when he was playing for us. People would jeer at him as a one trick pony and if he had a quiet game because he'd been mugged the week before it was apparently because he was "lazy" or some bulldust.

100% a footballer and a willing worker. Lost his spot in our side to Bobby Hill and Titchell, so no shame there, came back in as a mid. In the premiership side.

Earlier today I heard Simpson on SEN say Ginnivan was selfishly taking pot shots instead of passing wtf? Our defence is sparkling at the moment, I'd love Simmo to get the video up a show where Ginnivans options were.

WTF is Simmo talking about, Ginni kicked 3 goals straight šŸ˜‚

We absolutely love him at the Hawks, he's a footballers footballer.

Second half, he missed a few.

I don’t recall him burning anyone, but I suppose there also comes a point when things aren’t going well, where you think you just have to do it yourself

He gets paid to kick goals so I don’t have an issue with him having a go. In fact at times I don’t think he is selfish enough

Pies fan here and massive fan of Ginnivan.

I have been really, really confused by the way the Hawks have used Ginnivan. He is only having good games against Collingwood right now because he has always been the type of player to play up in big games/moments.

If you watch Ginnivans highlights with the pies he was always one of the deepest forwards and hanging around the contests to get a quick pick up and snap at goal, he was also leading out of the goal square as his set shot kicking was seriously some of the best in the AFL.

Since his move to the Hawks I have seen him play way further up the ground and it seem he is supposed to be part of a system where he is a linking player and not the end destination. I do not think it has worked at Hawthorn at all.

With Watson and Ginnivan both shown to be some of the best small forwards in the AFL when used right what are your thoughts Hawk fans about how Sam Mitchell is using him?

Don't disagree, but also remember he was in the VFL for a large chunk of 2023, so it's not like he was tearing the game apart under Fly that year.

Fly dropped him for off field drug use after he started the season suspended and constantly taking the piss from the coaches. He didn't fit in at Collingwood because its such an older professional and more family friendly environment. Then Ginni kinda went inside himself and was a bit lack but as a sub in the 23 finals series he was amazing playing that small deep inside 50 role.

If he didn't do that stupid off field stuff he would have been a constant in the 23 side. Hope he has grown from that as I will always have a soft spot for him. Not a good look that Ginnivan and Watson were too pissed to show up to a kids clinic not too long ago so maybe still some issues there.

Edit: "He didn't fit in at Collingwood because its such an older professional and more family friendly environment." Is an insane thing to say about Collingwood and I can barely believe its real lol.

Glad you added the edit because when we think of Collingwood we think of Swan, Shaw, DeGoey partying. Didak hanging at strip clubs with with murderers etc...

Hawthorn is very much a family club and were the first to have wives and children included on field celebrating a premiership. Sausage sizzles at training in the 80s and 90s. Massive family days. Having mothers and fathers days at training.

Ginnivan's dad and uncle are always in the rooms with the other parents etc..

No doubt ginny had a few issues but he's a clean skin compared to degoey, or even pendlebury out wandering drunk in the street breaching quarantine and before that getting into drunken fights.

Then on form, last year Ginni had a career best year up the ground not as a stay at home forward pocket. He uses the ball when and makes the right decisions, pushing up to stoppages he organises people and knows when to cause repeat stoppage or hack it forward etc.. We want him getting it up the ground more as he takes the best option in transition and his pressure was double what he was doing at Collingwood.

Had some poor games this year and some okay and some good and a great game against Collingwood. He's never going to get 30 and 3 goals every week, nobody ever has. But if he can do that 3-4 times in a year and keep a consistent performance other weeks we'll be laughing.

Think you mean Steele who got cooked on the Whiskeys and opened the wrong door, (which I choose to believe and JDG has completely turned his life around for what its worth)

I just think with your current squad Ginni should be playing deep forward, personally I say his 2022 year kicking 40 goals is better than 24 kicking 28 goals or his current 13 goals. Would not shock me if you saw him move deeper fwd. You have a few players who do what Ginni is doing now better than him but lack forward pressure and elite goal kicking. I appreciate your insight ofc.

He played a lot more up the ground last year as well where he had almost the same amount of scoring shots as 2022 but significantly more disposals, goal assists and scoring involvements.

If he’d just kicked a little straighter. The results wouldn’t be close. Statistically this year as well he’s having just as strong a year despite a slowish start to the year.

He’s over both 2024 and 2025 he’s been statistically better than Rayner who made the AA squad in 2024.

Sorry maybe it was sidebottom.

Ginnivan in 2025 is already statistically better than his 2023 with 4 less games.

His 2024 he had double the tackles of 2022 and more that 2022 and 2023 combined. Nearly double disposals from 2022.

In 2024 he had 53 scoring shots vs 59 in 2022. He wasn't as accurate.

2024 was not only his best season, it was double in pretty much everything except goals kicked.

More disposals, more inside 50s, more clearances, more goal assists, more tackles, more marks, more contested possessions, more uncontested possessions.

I think it's a pretty clear case that his best position is as a high half forward.

He has proven himself to be more than just a goal sneak. He's worked hard to get back in form this season after a slow start, he was a bargain and is the least of our worries at the moment imo.

How are you feeling about Schultz so far? Was he worth getting rid of Ginni for nothing as well as the potential to draft one of Murphy Reid/Trainor/Harry Armstrong?

Yeah super happy with Schulz, hes a beast and a huge upgrade, fits our age profile only concern is he has spent a bit of time injured and the concussions could have big long term effects but thats bad luck. If he stays healthy I can see him being a huge part of a potential 25 premiership team

He's pretty much statistically worse than Ginnivan in every area minus tackles.

I'm glad Schultz is playing better than he was last season as he was a bit of a whipping boy amongst my Pies supporting mates but the price paid for Schultz was very heavy.

A flag will make it right.
