I get that and am forever greatful for those years but you have to admit we fudged that selection.
Sounds a bit revisionist to me. People were going mad for him in his first season. Any time he did anything even remotely good the gameday threads flooded with "Oooh Billyyyy" memes and the like.

Then some time between him dislocating his elbow against West Coast, Zach Merrett breaking out, and the inevitable decline of the team (where outside wingers tend to be the first in line for sacrifice) people turned on the kid.

Suddenly he is considered shit and a terrible pick up. So I call BS. He was considered a good enough pick at the time and in the year or so after that. If you called it at the time that he wouldn't be any good and suggested we should have picked a different player who is now objectively better than him and was available at our pick then please link me to the post. At which point I will gladly agree to be your reference on your job application for Graham Wright's job.

Hindsight is a great help to back an argument. However you have to wonder what his call would have been at the time.

While a lot of people did jump on the bandwagon after he started playing, there wasn't exactly a super warm reception to him at draft time. I know I felt he would struggle at afl level due to his size a lack of versatility. Most felt he would slide further into the draft and possibly would have been available at our second pick. He was a player drafted with the sub rule in mind I feel and I think he excelled at that role but he seems to have struggled where he now has to play a full game staring at the same time as everyone else.

Pretty simple really.

I would have taken Garlett at 24 (with the knowledge he wouldn't last the off season) and then taken Hartung at 38 to put less pressure on him performing from dim wit supporters like myself.
It's worth remembering, it's not a players they are drafted at pick X, or what a trade for them costs.

It's also not their fault who is drafted after them.

Being shitty at a player for that is extremely illogical.

That whole live up to number one draft billing is all crap. They don't pick the club and by definition a club with early picks is in a bad position on field which isn't always the best place for a kid to develop.

Swapping Billy and Gartlett around would then mean there was more talk about the wasted Gartlett pick.
And Billy would then be compared to Tom Barrass taken just 5 picks later!

Yeah i was just taking the piss and for the record im not pissed at Hartung we just got the pick wrong (at this stage) and as you stated that happens all the time.

Anyway Jaeger called and was pretty ******* angry that HIS thread has been taken over by how speculative draft picks are etc etc.

9 players under 35 games in the team tomorrow
6 of them under 20
3 under 10

Four of those in our starting back 6
I'm expecting a win still.

Although when I looked back at gc's season so far to get comfort from their form in Melbourne they haven't been too bad.

There are 21 Australians still alive that have seen a team win more premierships than Hawthorn in their lifetimes.
Apologies for being "picky", but I dare say everyone born between September 2015 and September 2016 have "seen" only one flag, and it wasn't us. But will they remember and are they likely to be talking about it? :p
Apart from those under two.
Way to rain on my parade :( I use this wonderful statistic with opposition supporters all the time.

I think I can still pedanticly claim technical correctness because I said 'premierships' plural.
Therefore even though they have won one premiership more than us they are still yet to win more premierships.

So in your opinion our lack of talent under 25 is currently due to poor drafting/ development by us ? Mot much to do with the fact we haven't had a top 10 pick in a decade ?

Obviously lack of access to the top end of the draft is a big factor, top 5 especially but more than anything it's simply a numbers game.

We have usually taken the minimum 3 picks over the last several years and often used them on mature players like Ross and Simpkin, so simply haven't had the amount of kids come through that others have.

I'd also argue that most of this supposed young talent other teams have is based more on the draft picks they've had than actual performance. Just look at the young talented Saints playing the Crows who don't have a single top 10 pick on their list.

Draft picks have value of course especially the very top ones but they aren't the magic bullet people people make them out to be.

Nah, just throw in the word "adults" and you're golden. Remember, these are selective facts, not alternate facts:D

I thought this was the game preview thread. Seriously. Eldorado is right. Let's just truncate all threads into this one. Saves time.

Hey that Jaegar guy might go okay after the bye..

This is like waiting for Godot or somethin
