I like that bit where he lost the ball in the clearance and then he gets angry and through an insane second effort tackle he gets it back. Jaeger REALLY REALLY wants the ball. That's what we want

I can just picture their being multiple ball ups throughout the year cos Mitchell and O'meara refuse to let the other have the ball :D

They are 2 absolute bulls who stop at nothing to get the ball.

Going to be fun too watch.

I love burgs, but he's not one of the greatest players of all time.

But broadly, if Jaeger turns out as good as him, we should be very happy!
He was the go-to "break glass incase of emergency" player in what was arguably the greatest team of all time. I think that makes it very fair to say he's one of the greatest players of all time.

Agree with cryptor here.

The reason Happy_Hawker may think he isn't the greatest is due to how we use him. If we let him loose, he would be a star of the competition for years but probably break down a few years earlier.

But we've prolonged his career by just using him as an insurance policy. Without him, 2013 would've been another failed year.

So, you have never actually seen him play then?

Of course he is one of the greatest of all time. That is indisputable.

Burgs an awesome player, but it's a very very elite group of players who are the greatest of all time, you're talking Leigh Matthews and Peter Hudson.

It's because I see it as such a select group and the recognition that only very few players that are the greatest of all time.

I would definitely day he's one of the greatest *clutch* players of all time, though!

Astronaut.

You must have forgotten he was a star at Port, an inside specialist. The man can play defence, mid and forward and play them exceptionally. I have him easily in top 100 of all time, pushing for top 50. Can somebody tell me how many people have played AFL/VFL? Let's say it's 10,000, that would put him in the 1% bracket. Therefore, one of the greatest.

Pretty sure Burgoyne is ranked about 40th for most games ever played. There is only about 70 who have played over 300.

Nobody puts Burgers in a corner...

Yes.

1. Long career at a consistently high standard?
2. Exceptional at his position?
3. Dynamic game-changer?
4. At his best in big games, particularly in finals? (Extremely important at Hawthorn!)

I'd say "yes" to all 4.

Burgoyne has to be ranked among the greatest players of the game.

.

Burgoyne is one of the games greats. Skilled in every facet of the game and fair but hard toughness. A rare combination. His contributions under pressure can't be overstated, even while he was at Port. Hawthorn was Geelong's patsy for a few years and you only have to read the excellent section by M Gordon on the 2013 final against Geeelong to realise that Hawthorn was under some of the most extreme pressure to reverse the Geelong edge. He (along with Mitchell) held his nerve and finished under pressure like very few could. We lose 2013 and the group may have been split up and no 2014 or 2015- which he contributed to anyway. The turning point in our modern history. Let alone all his other performances. The big games are where the greats are made.
