Pretty confident that Josh Kelly will be off to St Kilda at the end of the year with our first round pick being on traded to GWS. Means we could have had Josh Kelly instead of Jaeger albeit on a much larger contract.

Makes you think doesn't it.

That's due to recruiting/scouting mistakes and the benefit of hindsight.

Having pick 1 meant you could have picked up Fyfe or Sloane. Having a much later pick, means these players are already gone or you're relying on teams above you to mess up their picks.
I disagree. There is any number of reason players slip and high draft picks miss. No one is the finished product at age 17

If you go through the players that are currently elite, majority of them are drafted in the early first round.

Some do slip through due to what you have said, they aren't finish products, but majority of them standout in the U18 carnival and during their youth careers.

It's an exception rather than the norm.

Agreed.

Lol. If you used a first rounder - even pick 1 - and got a top ten player of the comp you'd be stoked. My god this board is chock a block of buffoons
How many seasons have hodge or rewoldt been top 10 in the comp? Both have been incredible players and consistently good however I'd only have them in the top 10 2-3 seasons each.

Those 2 are undoubtedly the best number 1 picks ever.

I also think they are the only 2 number 1 picks that would be picked there again in hindsight.

No, he'd still be going to the Saints.

But pick 1 opens up the option for you to pick any of the others that were right after?

In the case of 2001, Judd, Ball and Hodge were the top 3 rated. We could've picked any of the 3.

Interesting if true. Considering they got Jack Steele (who was very highly touted as well) for a second rounder they are cleaning up. Imagine Pick 3 this year and a Jack Steele with a second rounder. The hypothetical mind boggles. :straining:

Deep inhale and relax, all done now and to worry about what is done only adds to heartburn, unless it all turns out well then its all beer and skittles.
Have faith I'd say.
Damn, beer and skittles would also give me heartburn, lol

Josh Kelly could have his legs snapped off in a freak training accident tomorrow, and in this alternate history of yours we'd have no O'Meara and our apparent off-season target would have no legs.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

St kilda think they're getting everyone and that this magical pick of ours will be used in three separate trades.

But you've given up on the competency of our recruiters to find an elite player with an early pick.

We could easily pick up the next Buddy, Bontempelli, Sloane, Fyfe.

If we can't find an elite with an early pick, then we're not going to do any better with a late pick, where it's most likely to find role players.
2 of those players werent even 1st rd picks you realise?

The "Hawthorn pick" is the new story for kids to replace the book depository/grassy knoll/two shooters. Never will the real truth be known but that enables the myth to grow and grow. St. Kilda will use it numerous times to acquire everybody of value and ensure the media report it that way.

Meh. Good luck to them.

Doesn't affect Hawthorn in any way and I like the Saints.

That's exactly the point

We could have picked luke ball which would have been a wasted pick 1- and that was the "super draft" best case scenario

We cant just grab a sloane/fyfe that isnt in the conversation unless with hindsight

The pick is gone mate. Hypothesising on the superstars we might miss out on gets nobody anywhere.

Also, if you insist on focusing on the high pick that might of been lost, perhaps using two players who were gems later in the draft isn't your best example
