I think it is pretty clear we just don't rate draft picks highly. I appreciate why supporters would and if omeara can't stay on the park then any price is too high from an absolutists point of view. From what I understand of the club, it would view the probability of getting a talent equal or better than omeara from the picks we used less than getting omeara. We won flags because our very best players were some of the greatest to have played the game. When games were on the line, hodge, Mitchell, rioli, Burgoyne and roughy were all thrown into the middle. What I believe the purpose of trading for omeara was the biggest chance of obtaining a player capable of emulating that kind of impact. These players are rare and the club obviously felt it could sacrifice a few foot soldiers (the likely outcome of all those picks) for a champion you can build a premiership side. Just have to wait and see how it goes but even cherry picking most drafts you don't find those kind of special players easily.

Edit: apologies, I didn't realise the age of the post I responded to. Wasn't trying to single out Cyriliffic or restart an old argument!
We just need him to regain his explosiveness, he gets that back and we are laughing. The flip side..... Well let's not go there

Agreed with what you have said, and those on here not being "positive" are debating whether he can become that special player again.

Based on what we gave up, we are wanting him to be that special player, not just a role-player.

Even if he is like Burgoyne and can't be a full time mid we can still be a winner if he is a match winner like Burgoyne. It's that match winning talent we need to support the foot soldiers which are easy to get.

Despite the quality that he has produced pre injury with the Gold Coast, JOM is without doubt a project, he hasn't been traded in to be dominant in his first half season with the club, he has been bought into be a dominant player for us over a long period of time. The club would have a plan with him and would be sticking to it, everything else being said externally won't be given any oxygen. They will keep working with JOM as he ticks off his KPI's, I quite frankly wouldn't care if he doesn't play at AFL level again this year, it's all about the process that club are working through and I have faith in it

now, I do agree with a lot of things you've said but the bit about not caring about him not playing again this year! I don't think that would be good, that will make it basically 3 years without footy and that would be really detrimental to his future as a star at AFL level. we cant have that, he MUST play at least 5 or so more games before the year is out or There Will Be Blood!

I did not see him play much before his injury but was said to be one of best midfielders even being tagged before Ablett. The few games that he has played for Hawthorn, have not seen any brilliance. He seems to be unaware of his surroundings, making wrong decision, who to pass to, etc. I know Burgoyne has slowed down but you can still see his brilliance from time to time, especially decision making. If he is not going to become permanent midfielder, at least he should have other abilities that make him elite. Either way we are in rebuild phase, if does not quite work out, in years to come we will get high picks to redraft, we have had experiments that have worked and others that have not. Just so glad for the 3 Peats, how can you beat that.

Sorry if this has already been said before, but from what I can see he was brought in not only because he has demonstrated exceptional ability, but also because he is future leader and ambassador of our club. Watch some of his media; particularly around the time he was traded, he is cool, calm and collected. His poise in front of the camera answering questions is unbelievable for a young bloke his age. I’m sure the Hawks plans for O’Meara go way beyond just his playing ability (which I’m confident will be superb once he has decent game time).

Commentary around what he has/may cost us is insane. As many have already said on here the draft is a lucky dip, sometimes you win, but many times you lose. I would gamble every day of the week on an elite proven player who our medicos have assessed as being 100% good to go.

We are extremely fortunate to have him and Mitchel at our club, I couldn’t be happier with our recruiting department.

When I say AFL level that could mean that he is playing some VFL along the way, lower level of footy where he can find his feet again by building up his match fitness and getting his touch back. I would agree with you in that it would be bad news if he fails to play any footy at all for the remainder of the year but I don't think that this will be the case.

My point is that the key for JOM is to bring him along slowly and build him back up to a player that closely resembles (if not totally replicates) the player he was and promised to be before he got hurt.

Even if it's VFL Development league, he needs to play games.

Can't have him missing practically 3 years of footy and expect him to be any better next year.
You want a guy with a suspect knee running around on crappy suburban grounds and against players who may not care as much about player welfare?

Go back and watch Silks first few games at the Hawks. Then remember that was a new club after a shorter layoff and after more games of AFL

It takes time coming back from injury and it takes time at a new club.

Jaeger needs time to build chemistry with his new team mates

So never play him anywhere other than AFL and on the MCG? Etihad won't be good for him, so never let him play there too.

This is on VFL grounds against AFL rookies and VFL players, not some park player wanting their 5mins of relevance.

Its not all that correct there are a few old hard nut VFL listed players who would dearly take down a tall poppy

Stratton has bone bruising as well, doesn't he. And he's been listed for 4-6 weeks.
No idea, Stratts was visibly limping and in pain.. O'mera wasn't when he played, he was just trotting around at half pace in his latest 2 games. I'd love to believe it's just bone bruising but I'm a skeptic and think more laterally than black and white or whatever the club media releases.

The thing that gets me is when a player cops a knock that keeps him out for some time there will be video of the exact moment the said contact occurred, quite often from more angles than JFK assassination, to this day I haven't seen any footage if this moment. That said bone bruising is a bitch, injured on the day you can play on whilst still warm, next week can play with pain relief but this is a one off option just like the Hawks did with Buddies hyperextension a few seasons back but play one week on pk with bone bruising and who knows how long the return time Will be, I've known guys to miss twelve weeks after returning the next week after initial injury.
