2020 couldn't have been worse for Patton.

Was super fit then we stop playing for a period then hit the hubs. He is a bloke whose body clearly needs routine and this year is the opposite. He looks to be in pretty poor condition. No surprise a calf goes after a hammy given how much footy he has missed. I guess the query is whether 2020 is year 1 in our fitness program and we should expect improvement in year 2 as we have see with most recruits or whether this year is genuinely a write off and next year is Year 1.

Costing us Matches by getting injured.

Is there a game we haven’t lost when one of our key forwards has been injured ?

Would love him out there, but jeez, pointless for the rest of the year now.

Totally out of condition, fat and unfit. Negligent but those in charge having him play. And totally unprofessional of him to be in the shape he is in. Yet, he seems more than happy to bitch and whinge at teammates for skill errors. The fact he is doing these injuries so easily and also so early in the games shows how totally unprepared his body is. Standards are dropping at the club.

Find it strange how large he is this season yet there seemed to be so much talk about him being “fit and firing” on the track during pre season.
Every pre season report was the same about how good Patton looked.
Have a look at any photo of him 2016/17 GWS and he’s noticeably leaner.

Wonder if he is just unfit, or the weight was put on by design. Either way its not working for him at all

firs shot from preseason and second shot from Thursday. Looks a little bigger in the gut but it is hard to tell. He looked noticeably slimmer now than he did prior to his first injury. So at least they recognise the need to get some weight off of him. But all in all he is simply too big.

he needs to get back down to this kind of weight.

Not always possible - as you get older the body changes.

As is the way with so many of the players we have brought across, his first season has been littered with niggles and training management.

In the extremely small sample size that he gave us, he straightened us up and gave us a target.

I feel like we only got glimpses, yet we saw enough to know that he will have an impact when he can string some games together.

Even if he lost ten kgs of muscle he would still be a very big strong man. He just needs to go out and do a lot of running and agility training to bring his mass down and turn himself into an afl player again instead of a colossus better suited to standing at the gates of a city and warding off marauders.

Actually Bris, you would think he would be really strong from the aesthetic, but he isn’t anything special strength wise, and really lacks power. Not sure he needs to lose any muscle, but he needs to drop 10kg of fat and work on his power, which getting leaner will contribute to. But genetically he just isn’t built that way so much.
Unfortunately he doesn’t like contact either which makes his size a little more useless.
And he doesn’t need to do any excess running or agility work to lose the weight, he just needs to adjust the food intake, which isn’t hard if he has the proper advice and cares enough to do it.

Jono Patton, demonstrating his agility against a small defense

You are right. My point is the mass he is carrying around is hurting his ability to play football. Wasn't trying to preclude targeted strength work or losing body fat. If his core and legs didn't have to support all that mass through his chest and shoulders etc. he might find he is better balanced and have more power but definitely working on those things will help. Needs to lose some body fat and I think he is already thinking that given he seemed to lose a couple of KGs while out injured.

Yep don't risk him again this year. Get the calf right and get fit over the summer Patto.

We all need to get behind the big man!

Shut him down for the rest of the year. Give Lewis a chance to play the last 4 games.
