Kingy has likened him to Zack Butters on First Crack tonight. Said we got a draft bargain and will be nominated for the Rising Star in the next 6 weeks.

Literally what i've said. Zak Butters is a star and it's what Butler is, both move smoothly across the ground, great pace and good users of the footy, really tough and hard at it and yeah perfect.

Oh, Kingy’s saying something positive about Hawthorn, best we all agree with him this time

Might be our best selection from last years group He has something. I'm not sure what it is but yesterday when he wanted to go he got the ball and something happened. Now we just need a specialist fwd pocket in this draft and then our fwd line is looking really good for the future.

Going early... we nailed the 2021 draft in a way that I've not seen our club do ever.

I seriously can't remember us getting 4 from 4 to land such high quality players. Have been waiting to see Butler since he was drafted, and he's shown a lot in just his second game.

Against the Lions Butler looked like McDonald has all season - just class and composure with the ball in hand.

Has the physical attributes and smarts to ensure that the goals are going to come, along with great strength at a young age to lay a couple of tackles when he needed to.

Such an exciting time for the Hawks, and going to be a lot of fun watching Newcombe, Ward, McDonald and Butler develop together. That's going to be a heck of a midfield core right there.

2004 went alright.

Im Confident Long will be playing a big part in that midfield also.

On weight of talent, that's the best draft haul any club ever had at a guess. 2 Coleman winners, 4 time and a 2 time premiership star, multiple club champions etc.

I can't remember us nailing picks like we did last year though, pre-season, mid season, and deep into the main draft. We only had one top ten selection too.

The odds would be pretty long that we'd be staring down the barrel of the quality we have likely got.

Objectively there's a lot of water to go under the bridge, but I believe the signs are there.

4 hard nosed players with elite traits that will just need exposure at the highest level to develop, and another in Bramble who showed last year that his best is upper B grade quality.

I'm thinking McKenzie might have to change his last name to MacGyver. At this stage in time it seems all he needs is a toothpick some string and a bottle cap to discover a gem. Seriously though Andy Collins and all the recruiters need their kudos as well.

Yep, no respect given.

It's pretty incredible to nail elite talent with 3 of the first 7 picks in any draft year (2004). You could miss with one or even two of those. Hawthorn's 2004 haul helped transform our club.

But it's something else when you can't afford to miss even one, and you nail them all the way from the junk time pre-season and miseason picks, to number seven and then all the way out to numbers 23 and 26 (and further one or two more come on) in the national draft.

The odds would be pretty long I'd imagine that we unearth talent to the degree it looks like we did last year.
No big fan of Geelong but their 2001 haul is hard to beat.

Bartel, Kelly, Stevie J and Ablett Jr is about as good as you can do. Granted they lucked out with Ablett Jr, but he wasn't anything special prior to being drafted.

That one definitely came to mind if you're talking all comers, but I'd scratch it for the father son.

Absolutely turned that side around in a hurry though, and sadly I saw a lot of it live because family follow their club.

Similar to us, two drafts was all it took to build an all time great core. Us with 2001 and 2004, them with 1999 and 2001.

We got Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Roughy and Buddy. They got Corey, Chapman, Ling, Bartel, Kelly, Stevie J and Ablett Jr.

Then we both went through patches of absolutely wasting all of our first round picks on average players and still managed to succeed. Funny how it works out.
