Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Tom Barrass!

Kingy has been beating this drum since we showed interest in him, will be interesting to see how this year plays out because I suspect we may find that McGovern relied on Barrass more than the other way around

We also have Battle,Sicily and Scrimshaw to play that McGovern role.

One thing for sure I won't worry when we have to match up against the true "power forwards" in the league (Jessie Hogan, etc) as Tom is an absolute unit and can hold his ground against anybody.

Sic and Scrimmers were always very good against the big bean pole forwards like 2MP and Harry McKay but where they could struggle was against those powerfully built 195cm types.

We have the defensive assets now to cover whatever mix of forwards the opposition throws at us.

We had no answer to Hogan.

At the risk of being shouted down, he appears to be playing a touch heavy. Given his back issues, reducing his upper body weight will help to improve his longevity among other things.

We may have to wait until the next preseason for this to happen.

He had his program handed to him before the trade even went through.

He’s playing at the weight we wanted him to play at.

He will only improve both his playing ability and his connection with the others. I thought he was good for his first game and that wow, in 3-4 weeks he will have the rub of the play of the back six and be an integral piece in all of our victories.

Yep. There were teething issues with Lake and (especially) Frawley. They looked completely different with most of a season under their belt.

We saw in the doco that he has to rewire his instincts to defend in Hawthorn's system.

Barring injury, the first month or so of Barrass and Battle integrating in the team should be the most fragile and mistake-prone time for the new defensive unit. And that "floor" is looking pretty bloody good after Friday.

Remember Frawley being tried forward for a bit because he was struggling to fit in down forward. He also played forward in the Qualifying Final we lost to West Coast in 2015

FWIW I was told Frawley was tried down forward in some of those latter games because he was suffering from migraines but we still wanted him in the side, just in case he was needed.

Good - I want him absolutely crunching opposition forwards like he was on Friday. I think his opponents woke up fairly sore on Saturday.

TB played well in the opening round, but I don't think we used him to his/team's capacity.

We should've played a lockdown FB on Amartey, freeing up Barrass (BP) to control the D50m. Like we had Lake do, during out threepeat period (insane we didn't keep him for 2016 ).

He played well & showed his worth, but he has plenty of improvement (output) available, without changing what he naturally does. Can't wait to see him develop over the course of the season.

If you want proof that God is a Hawthorn supporter remember this.

We missed out on Spud McKay and Esava and landed Battle and Barrass.

Barrass doesnt sound like a footballer. He's composed, thoughtful and eloquent. Just a real good human by the sound of it.

He also adds alot to the team. Still finding his feet but really if he holds down FB and plays on the best forward every week then it frees up Siciliy to play as a flanker. Massive win for the club

Doing this isn't playing to his strength(s) & we're upsetting our balance & wasting him a bit.
