Jasmine Evans was a player few had heard of two years ago, but after a stunning rise through the ranks at SANFL Women’s level in a debut season to remember, the talented young star quickly made a name for herself. She became a senior premiership player at the level, earned a spot in the AFLW Academy and has been a permanent fixture in the South Australian state side.

Evans’ story is an intriguing one, having played hockey growing up, then opting to give footy a go. She started out at Salisbury, and while the global pandemic effected much of the formulative years of footy, Evans got her chance in 2021 where she booted 12 goals across 24 games playing in both the Under 15s and Under 16s sides.

I didn’t want the season to go by without highlighting the extremely high quality of Jasmine Evan’s’ foot skills. They were on show twice in the game against GWS, but have been overlooked because of everything else that happened in that game.

The first time was in the second quarter with about 6 minutes to play. Abbey Dowrick won the ball under pressure about 60m from goal. She handpassed over the top of her tackler in Jasmine’s direction. It bounced slightly awkwardly but Jasmine didn’t panic, took the ball cleanly and, in one smooth movement, turned and speared the ball right into the solar plexus of a leading Julia Teakle, who goaled from the set shot.

The second time was in the last quarter with about 4 minutes to play. Jasmine marked a hurried clearance, again about 60m out, spotted Gemma leading out and off one step hit her right on the chest lace out, just clearing a GWS player standing about 5m in front of where Gemma took the mark.

Gemma lined up for what would have been her 100th goal but pulled it to the left. If Gemma had converted what was a pretty simple set shot for her 100th goal, I think that more would have been made of the brilliant pass that led up to it. On the other hand, we would have missed the drama of the goal after the siren.

On each occasion it seemed that almost as soon as Jasmine took possession of the ball, the forward started to lead, such is their confidence in the foot skills of this first year player. I can’t remember any player anywhere coming into senior footy with such brilliant disposal by foot, and it really needs to be called to attention. She’s done this in other games too, and it would be great to see a video of her best passes from this season.

We’ve picked some really good Jasmine (Evans and Sowden) from last year’s draft which I’m sure will give us a lot of enjoyment into the future.
