Respectfully, please stop this nonsense about Berry for rest of this season. It's too negative. He showed us his quality in pre season. This is all to do with confidence
Well put, some of the judgements being put out there are extreme and way to early. Everyone is pissed off and angry but some restraint is needed.

We've seen all of those things from him, he's got a sharp field kick, and he is pretty quick too. We saw in one of the pre season games he absolutely lit it up down the middle of the field.

These are all things that were his noted strengths in the draft, so i dont see how he's just lost everything that made him so appealing

If you really wanted to, you could go to the "highlights" tab on his profile on the AFL app, and you can see small highlight reels of his game

It's not much but it might help you see more of his game in isolation

To me it looks like he works really high up the field as an outlet mark, he's got a good pentrating kick and good evasive skills, looks like more of a wingman so far
No we have not seen those things at the level he has been recruited to play which is AFL. He’s kicked one goal from the goal square after a handball receive gift. He has sprayed every set shot he has taken. His field kicking has been abysmal. I agree he looks more likely to be a wingman hence my Amon comparison. Amon was taken at pick 68 someone said. Berry looking a massive reach. Those that don’t like to hear it or read it too bad.

So he immediately lost his talent when he got drafted?

He obviously needs time be it for fitness and/or confidence. He’s not the quick fix many were hoping. Many top draft picks are busts, that is the reality of the draft lottery. I see him as becoming an Amon type which is not what he was recruited for but you’d take that output as Amon has developed into a consistently good player.

i feel like these players who you mentioned all showed very ovbious x factor and talent at afl level

lets hope berry shows something by the end of this year, ad hopefully get a rising star nom in 2025
this about the x factor

how many bottom quartile games is the longest a draftee has played, who is later agreed to be a any better than decent player (not "star")?

At what point had they shown "something"? A sidestep, a baulk, 3 repeat runs, a few play makes....?

I cant recall a single possession this kid has had, never mind anything memorable.....or what he even looks like tbh. I think he is small-medoum and has curly hair

anyway, hopefully he doesnt read BF (sadly for him he would most probably).

Hope he doesn't do a hammy in Q1 of his next game

Was your last sentence really needed ? 🙄

confidence is an 18 year old in an F1 car

It's a 14 year old in the IPL. A 19 year old ramping a 150Kmh ball in his first test match

AFL players are ex used for poor effort and their own performances

No NBA player gets that permission slip

99.9% of good players basically showed something when they started

Is he currently injured? if he's not, it means he's not beating other SANFL players to force his way into this team

I think most of the negativity comes from the fact we over paid to get to Berry, like we did with Sinn (mind you Sinn was a monsterous cost in comparison), and to most of us he was sold as a mercurial, ball winning, small forward with a nous for goals.

What we've seen from Berry is nowhere near that, he's a pacy, line breaking wingman, who shirks contact a bit, with some nice ball use (though has been nervously missing targets).

This causes the problem, because another flanker Amon/Farrell type which he is, is not what this club needs, and it is what our recruiters keep getting sucked into. Que PTSD dog.

At the same time, the ball winning, clever small forward, to future mid type, we really needed was available at our pick, went a couple picks after us, and kicked 2 bags of 4 goals in his opening 11 AFL games.

We can't write Berry off, he'll still play a lot of AFL footy, but the hope he'd be a quality small forward looks to be fading. He really screams Amon/Farrell type, and so lets hope from wing or half back he really develops over summer and starts to make that spot his own in 2026.

Antonelli has scored less than half the points of his teammate so far. Konstas flopped in his next 3 innings and hasn’t played Test cricket since. Both are also playing non-contact sports where the physical differences between boys and men aren’t amplified like they are in footy.

There are plenty of players who took some time before hitting their stride.

I wasnt keen on Berry but he deserves time. The whole team looks like shit at the moment and people are expecting an 18yo to consistently show his talent in a dysfunctional forward line with ball butchers kicking the ball to him.

Got excited for a split second here

Freo have played like shite too but they have Murphy Reid to make them look good. He's kicked more goals than Shai Bolton! Playing the 'whole team looks like shit' card is a cop out for poor individual performance.

You'd have to know nothing about football to be calling Berry a bust at this early stage of his career.

He did some nice things in preseason and has impressed a lot inside the four walls at Alberton.

It will click for him soon, probably next season, and everyone will be raving about him.

Just keep playing the kid

He’s gotta be better than some of the crap the senior players are dishing up..get 15 games into him ready for next year

Just FYI to anybody saying 'it's too early to write him off' in one breath and then talking about what a future star he'll be in another, it's just as 'too early' to be making that call too. And what little evidence we do have is pointing more in the bust direction than the star direction so far.

No it isn't.

He has elite traits and the club has huge raps on him internally already.

Again you'd have to know nothing about football to think he looks like a bust already. If he's 3 years in and still can't get a game then that's a different story, but he's half a season into his first year.

The season is shot so I'd be playing him every game for the experience, as the composure will come with more games under his belt.
