Is this kid really being developed in the SANFL? There's no cohesiveness in that side or method. Feel like he could get very lost in the Maggies. I don't quite see the ball movement suiting him, especially given that half our side have poor kicking skills.

Personally, the way the season is going I'd just play him in the AFL side. We ain't making finals and even if we do it's not gonna be past week 1 so why not just develop him in the AFL side?

In terms of game style etc - hard no.

But SANFL is good to develop one on one nous which is exactly what the club are trying to develop in Jack. Very confident he’ll be given the time and opportunities to succeed as best he can

Playing AFL might just accelerate Whitlock's development rather than languishing in the SANFL and then getting delisted in two years. Even Lord showed more signs playing in the AFL rather than the SANFL. It speaks volume on how awful our reserves side has become. So many duds and list cloggers because of poor list management strategy and overpaying on B-grade recruits.

In hindsight, finishing in top 4 did more harm than good since Port kept trading away picks for average recruits and the draftees that came were average e.g. 2022 and 2023 draft. Does not help that Port were forced to trade Houston for unders to get a 1st round pick in the teens and a few 2nd rounders + Luko, Richards and...Atkins. Let's not also forget Port stupidly traded away their 2025 1st rounder which is currently a top 10 pick because they wanted to trade in good faith to GC. Port just does not enough talent to play this current game style.

Then there's the issue of Hamish Harlett being an average coach, as a player he underperformed for someone of his talent; Pick 4 and could never develop the tank to play midfield consistently and played half-back.

So many pressing issues at Port and it does not like look it will be resolved anytime soon even when Josh takes over.

Tall forwards need time, he would get destroyed in the afl because he doesn’t have the size or fitness

Look at the difference 3 pre seasons and 15kg of muscle has done for thilthorpe.

I think it would do more harm than good

Gotta give him a look though to develop one on one nous

Right now I don't see us kicking it to him when we go inside 50. Well, at least it's not by design and it's more by luck. I'm not convinced that's helping his development.

Yes he took a good one on one mark yesterday but even that kick was a high ball that he sat under.

I'd much rather he learn some forward craft, putting some space between him and his opponent, leading etc.

That's debatable though, I'd argue that Lord has spent multiple seasons in SANFL and hasnt come on in the same way. Crows have a better gameplan/system that helped develop Thilthorpe. Not convinced we do.

Holding Finlayson out of the SANFL side doesn’t help Whitlock. We have this conservative approach of not giving our emergencies SANFL game time. I get why but I think it’s detrimental to their form not playing and it doesn’t help their younger teammates - in this case Whitlock - who would have benefited from playing alongside another tall forward with experience today.

Westhoff had a fantastic year with Centrals in 2006.

He also turned 21 the year he debuted for Port. So physically more mature.

And he kicked 34 goals in 2007, the most ever in a season during his career.
