“Some people weren’t happy about it, but stuff them. It was in the moment. It’s about belonging, it was a beautiful thing,’’ Sean Gorman, respected author and manager of the indigenous player alliance, said.

Gorman’s point was that old-school views where any kind of affection or acknowledgment between opposition players is seen as a sign of weakness, is being forsaken for players living in the moment.

“What Stack did was what blackfellas do at end of the game, but he did it in the game. Two brother boys came together,’’ Gorman said.

“What we’re seeing now in football is a bunch of actions and behaviours within club land and from players themselves, particularly indigenous players, where they will do what they want to do … and if you don’t like it, then you deal with it. Stack is a star, an enigma. But he understands he can do what he wants to do. It’s called agency, players using their voice and their actions.’’

2. THE KID HIMSELF

Sydney Stack is a revelation and perhaps a leader of a revolution. The argument that he is a serious rising star contender can’t be ignored. He’s explosive, fearless and creative. His footy IQ for a 19-year-old is off the charts. When he gets his fitness to the necessary levels he will be a brutal weapon in the midfield.

As for being a leader of a revolution, and as Gorman pointed out, Stack will express himself how he wants to and when he wants to without fear of criticism or ridicule. His war dance at the Dreamtime game was powerful and authoritative and his embrace with Eddie Betts was much the same. You’ve got to admire his dash.

All the love for Sydney Stack from opposition supporters I suspect will have a limited time span. Stacky is bound to clean up plenty of opposition players throughout his career.

Stacky had several goes at trying to clean up Michael Walters when we played Freo and even took on Mummy in his first game.

Garry was commenting on it as not being an indigenous issue, he always says he doesn't like players smiling after they lose etc. If it was 2 white players who did the exact same thing he would have given the exact same comments.

I have seen plenty of occasions where white players have been in a similar situation. It may not have been a hug but they've definitely given props to another for an impressive feat. The only reason people are talking about this is because they're indigenous and because it's so blatant.

Kane Cornes redraft of the 2018 draft.

It’s early days, but from what I’ve seen this year the 2018 top 10 selections would already be completely different if the draft was to be repeated today. It’s guaranteed that the mistakes of every recruiter in the country to overlook Stack wouldn’t be repeated.

Carlton’s Sam Walsh went number to Carlton, and he’s having a fine rookie season.But he lacks genuine X-factor, and he’s not going to be the best player from that draft.

Port Adelaide’s Connor Rozee has match winning qualities, versatility and significant upside, meaning that he’d be my number one pick. The Power also scored a coup when they stole Xavier Duursma with pick 18. If the draft were repeated, he’d be selected much higher.

Pick three in 2018 was Izak Rankine, who went to the Gold Coast. Unfortunately, his first season has been wrecked by injuries, and the talented forward is yet to lace up the boots. Injury has also derailed St Kilda forward and number four pick Max King’s first season.

For AFL clubs to have sustained success and build towards a premiership they must invest heavily in the draft over consecutive years. Employ a recruiting manager who has a history of success to mitigate blunders and look deeper into a players potential despite the obvious flaws is vital.

That way the mistakes of overlooking players such as Stack won’t be repeated.

5. Bailey Smith

That can't be right Stocker is meant to be the 6th best player and Walsh the best number one pick ever.

What does SOS think about that!?
 
Interesting from that article Stack is No.4 in the AFL for disposals per turnover and Walsh is No.16 in the AFL for turnovers when under no pressure.
and in five of his 13 games he's had a kick rating of -10% or worse.

(Kick rating provides context around the difficulty of a player's attempted kick, taking into account how much pressure was on him.
That means in five of Walsh's matches, he delivered the ball by foot at least 10 per cent more inaccurately than what would be expected, compared to other players)
 
If you re did the draft now stack could easily go #1 imo, has more tricks than walsh
