If this years draft is weak compared to the 2024 - how could Emmett have starred as an underager in 2024 against what we are told was a superior crop?
He didn't "star" though as an underager, he was simply very good.

You'd expect every top 30-40 selection to be a good underage player, that's just the nature of being a highly talented footballer when you're playing in games where of the 36 blokes on the park on average 30 of them aren't going to get drafted, even if they're a year older.

Certainly an important distinction to make and should be taken into account when assessing any draftable talent. Anyone with ambitions of being on an AFL list will look amazing at some point as a junior.

Still worth noting that coming into the year he was seen as far and away the premier key position player of the class, and may have stayed that way if his season wasn’t marred by injury. Was even touted as a potential #1 pick early on.

Speed and agility is in vogue right now, and key position players are falling down draft boards year on year, not necessarily reflective of their true position within the crop. The club clearly saw a good market opportunity at that stage in the draft on a player with his attributes. There’s a lot to work with.

Of course, I'm just making the point that many of the top 26 drafted ahead of him would have had equally as good, or better, underage stats in their U17 year, even while being a weak draft cohort.

Robey wasn't even in the radar as a 17 year old.

Then again, Sam Darcy was a fringe prospect in his under age year...
